After so much controversy about the local breweries sponsoring community events, I noticed in the news that one brewery has decided not to give funds to HRM events any longer. The main complaint was that the sponsor’s advertising could be seen by and even be targeting the fine children and teenagers of Halifax. Are you fucking kidding me?! How is this any different from your kid seeing a Keith’s ad on TV while watching X factor or some other shit show?! A company banner and a thank you speech at the Tree Lighting isn’t going to make your kid start drinking anymore than those commercials do, and if these parents who raised such a huff about this are so concerned about it, talk to your god damn kids about alcohol use! HRM is already lacking in the community events/spirit area, and now with even less funding to put towards what we do have, you can bet your ass they will suck even worse now, or money will be taken from taxpayers to make up the difference. People need to get a grip and stop blaming companies and advertisements for their kid’s behaviour when they are too lazy to explain these things to them. —It’s Not the Ads, it’s Your Shitty Parenting

  1. Is it me, or is this the second time in a week that the bitches have appeared only after someone bitching about it?

  2. i agree o.p., the same as those images on ciggie packs will stop anyone from smoking, or even starting.booze and smoking are a part of history, from the earliest times on til now. if you ban advertising one, then why not the other. next thing you know, they stop the ads for condoms, because kids will wanna go out and fuck, sheeesh, where does the silliness end. a joke is told years ago about about virgin from newfieland, the punchline was that she was only 4 years old. i can’t remember all of it, thank fuck.
yep o.p., i do agree, let us have our vices, and let those that do not, stay the same. why do we need a nanny to tell us ans show us bullshit, that some of us, don’t give a fuck about anyway. GO GET EM’ TIGER.

  3. Funny isn’t it that the Natal Day Parade is called Alexander Keith’s Natal Day Parade. If you ask the vast majority of people who Alexander Keith is, they will respond with the beer guy and hardly any of them will know he was mayor of Halifax for a few years. Susannah (Oland) should have ran for office then we wouldn’t have this idiocy. What’s the difference between mom and dad having a crew in a beer tent or at home? The kids will still see.

  5. omg ivan, truly? too funny.

it’s a successful local company that should be allowed to contribute to community events without people flipping out. where do they think the money is going to come from? cookie sales?

  6. I applaud you Olands!!!! Fuck HRM and their useless council. I hope their withdrawl from funding lasts for ever. Can you imagine ponying up a bunch of dough for special events, then having your company name being drug through the mud by a bunch of pretentious hypocrites. Alcohol is good enough for the government to make hundreds of millions of dollars each year from, but the breweries shouldn’t help out their community? BAAAHHHHH!!!!! Idiots, when the government gets out of the liquor business, and offering Air Miles as an incentive, they can preach till they go blue in the face. Until then, fuck off!!!

  7. oh lordie, well i was in the mood to be fooled by that one. and believable for that old attention grabber.

  8. K, I’mma break it down for y’alls because this is what I do.

    This is what LIKELY happened:

Brewery execs: we need a way to save $$$ and still look good
Brewery PR people: why don’t you cut corporate sponsorships for community events? it’ll save you money AND you can use the angle that “OH HAY! We care about families and responsible drinking”
    Brewery execs: done.

It’s a PR thing, guys. The brewery wanted to save money and in return they also got to ‘look good.’ And no one’s the wiser.

It’s spin at its finest, guys.

  9. Save $25,000 a year? ($20,000 for Natal Day and $5,000 for the tree lighting ceremony) I suppose but in the grand scheme of things, that sounds like pretty small savings to me. They probably write more than that off in spoiled product. According to the attached CBC story, they said they’d be open to resuming sponsorship of city events once the city has a proper sponsorship policy in place. To me, it sounds like Olands is saying to HRM, “Ok, you know what? Fuck you guys. When you finally pull your heads out of your asses long enough to figure out what you want, come back and see us. Then we’ll talk” And I, for one, don’t blame them one bit. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/… As for those people who think brewery sponsorship promotes under-age drinking….lol I agree with OB. Stop blaming the breweries for you shitty parenting. Talk openly and frankly with your kids about alcohol. They stand a better chance of making the right decision when they’re in a situation that they have to make that choice of to drink or not to drink. (And they WILL face that choice at some point)
Under-age drinking has been around for as long as there’s been legislation against it. I’m not saying that makes it alright but kids will always find ways to get booze, whether it’s raiding dad’s liquor cabinet or getting an older buddy to buy them a case of beer. The notion that they’re getting this idea from brewery sponsored events is ridiculous, IMO. Otherwise you’d better take back that Mooseheads jersey and Budweiser NASCAR model you bought your kid for Christmas.

  10. Bring back Robert Smith the Spilly Talker and Label Peeler guy for all beer companies and associated promotions. Kids will listen to him, he loves them all so much.

  11. if a corporate sponsor (and yes, that amount is just piddles for a brewery) gets BAD pr instead of GOOD pr for it’s efforts, it’s just going to stop. and what’s wrong with those little kiddies flopping around on the ice at intermission? they will remember that shining moment for the rest of their lives. and it’s not about the beer, it’s about being in that huge forum, with lights and thousands of people cheering. those little tykes are so cute it makes my teeth hurt. and hey, mooseheads games are great! and cheap! and more exciting than the nhl over paid lazy bastards.

  12. my whole point is that there ISN’T anything wrong with it…
nor them sponsoring anything they like.
Fucking idiots just keep flogging this dead horse every time the ‘think of the children’ clan open their stupid traps.

  13. What Harper said.

Just pure idiocy and hypocrisy. NSLC posted record profits last year. I believe their 4th quarter results were the best they’ve ever had. They should come out of pocket for the 25k they refuse to take from Keith’s.

    This province is fucked.

  14. Funny thing is that the only people consistently whining about Oland’s sponsorships have been a certain quorum within city council, who apparently made enough of a squeak about it that the company pulled out.

Seriously, though, pulling out because a couple of councillors were bringing it up seems a little heavy-handed on Oland’s part, almost as if they were looking for an excuse to pull out. If I owned the brewery that helped build this city and some moral panic types wanted to protest my decision to sponsor an event, I’d be telling them where to go and what to do when they got there, and going ahead with putting money into an event. Do you know why? I’d still be making more money from the spinoffs of sponsoring the event (selling my beer at the event and afterwards) than I’d be saving in costs from pulling out. Oland’s looks like it wants to throw its weight around the council chambers by pulling this shit rather than ignoring it: it doesn’t have the local pull it once did because it’s owned by a freakin’ conglomerate who’s flooding the market with American and Montreal-based bear wizz.

  15. People object to fast food, cigarettes, alcohol and so many other advertisements all the time. Do we have 100% of the population eating burger king with a side of JD and Player’s light? No. Council assumes everyone, including children, are sheep, play follow the leader and do everything they are told.

My kids never notice any of that shit at hockey games or any events sponsored by beer companies – they are kids and are more interested in having fun.
