Instead of expanding roads into downtown Halifax, get better transit and jack up the rates for parking there. Look what happen when they put an extra lane on the MacDonald Bridge it just increased the amount of cars going across the bridge it did not improve the situation. Ottawa and Vancouver have the best bus systems in Canada they do not have the traffic problems Halifax has. If you are in front of DND headquarters at quitting time there are at least 50 buses waiting to be filled up and they do get filled up and within 15 minutes they are gone and same happens downtown Ottawa, and all the major work places. If 25% of the cars presently were replaced with people using buses it would a major improvement. —Wish I had a Better Transit System

They would have to make huge improvements to the transit system, as it is right now I don’t think many people really trust it to get them to work on time. My fiance has to ride the bus from bayers rd to spring garden to work and she says it sometimes takes an hour to get home (its about a 50 min walk). At the bus stop there are 3 buses she can catch, 17, 80, and 81, and sometimes its over 30 mins for any of them to get there. The bus has brought her to work late 3 times in the last 2 months, by no fault of hers.
For the most part it is all because of the traffic in Halifax, so I don’t really know what can be done to make the buses any faster, they will still be stuck in the same traffic.
Other citys such as Ottawa which has a great transit system has entire roads which are for buses only, this is not feasible in halifax because of the extreme lack of space.
For the population of Halifax it definately has some big traffic issues.
If you don’t like it, leave. That’s what I’m doing, along with most of my generation.
I hereby propose the widening of
1) Armview / Pryor / Jubilee
2) Oxford from Quinpool to Beaufort and Inglis.
All in favour?

I am so there….

Why not, wha?
I suggest google transit – it’s a big time saver. I have found many routes and methods (transfers) I never would have thought of, without it
Ottawa has a great bus system, yes, but the vast majority of drivers are really REALLY cranky.
I encountered exactly THREE nice ones when I lived there. The singing bus driver, the chick who wouldn’t let me get off at the wrong stop in the pitch dark because I was ‘new to the city’ as she said, and the one who drove me around the loop that wasn’t on his route so I could get a quicker bus home from Ikea! 🙂
The rest were assholes, and even abusive assholes at that! One drove past me at a major terminal and I had this “WTF” look on my face and shrugged my shoulders. He stopped, opened the door and yelled “GET THE FUCK ON THE BUS AND HURRY THE FUCK UP” and then proceeded to yell at me until another passenger got on (I was the only one on there) about how stupid I was for not being at the night stop when it was only 5pm (night stops start at 7pm). I pointed this out, but it only seemed to piss him off more.
He then decided, later on in the route, to give some poor guy a hard time because his transfer had expired LITERALLY 2 minutes prior — but get this: he was LATE getting to that guy’s stop because he: STOPPED AT SUBWAY FOR A SANDWICH!
I knew nothing’d happen if I reported him, so I told him he was a miserable asshole when I left and told him to eat a big pile of shit.
At least in Halifax, you’re more likely to encounter three cranky ones, instead of only three nice ones.
Jack up the bus fares too. Maybe then they can weed out the poor people from using it.
I disagree with the first statement.
I think its about time that city planners across this fine country get their arses fired.
They need to wake the fuck up, and realize that is a gad dang car in my driveway, not a bicycle or a pair of nikes.
And, another thing, someone should hire an engineer away from Walmart, they know what a fucking parking lot is supposed to look like.
What? The size of 3 football fields with only 2 points of entry/exit and the lower third turned into a make-shift redneck trailer park?? At least, that’s what the one in Bayers Lake looks like to me.
