A open letter to the bakers in HRM:

Bagels are not meant to be made from standard bread dough. I am tired of getting bagels that are essentially bread in a circular shape. Bagels are dense, moist and chewy, not soft, dry and squishy.

I”m really trying to support local businesses, but when you make products that are of inferior quality, I’ll always choose the better quality product, even if that product is a large national brand. I shouldn’t have to go to Montreal to get a bagel that is made properly. —Bagel Lover

  1. True wheeliep, but unless you get them on Thursdays when they arrive, they tend to go all stale after a day or so. The best place to get good bagels, of course, in Montreal! Fresh from le oven at St. Viateur, oui oui!

  2. There haven’t been good bagels in Halifax since Yenta’s left. Petes are useless. I make my own, boiling them in honeyed water. On pilgrimages to Montreal I eat them straight from the Fairmount oven, theres no way to describe it…

  3. Had a couple of obnoxious German backpackers in the store a couple of years back. Bought some Chomsky, felt obliged to share with us their overweening contempt for all things American, especially all manifestations of American culture. They’d just spent a week in the Big Apple and the only good thing about it was – the bagel. “Ach, Ya, ve luff ze bagels. You cannot get gut bagels in Chermany”

    …AND WHOSE FAULT IS THAT?
    (Thanks Emo)

  4. Uncle Vanya has never been one to let a little thing like truth interfere with a good story. The punchline is sampled(plagiarized) from Emo Phillips, and the Chomsky-loving Eurotrash are true. The rest,…not so much >; )

  5. i make my own as well mr. cranky but i use malt and honey in the water…3 hours later 16 bagels and the house smells loverly

  6. Two if By Sea has the St. Viateur bagels, but getting those is like getting their croissants, it would seem. I’ve tried making them at home, but my baking skills are, how shall we say, limited (kitchen fires have happened).

Ivan, that was magnificent. Germans are terrible tourists. They’re usually well-to-do, and there’s one thing that’s worse than a rich American or Russian, it’s a rich German. I remember one time when I was teller at a bank downtown, a German had just come off the tour boat to exchange his money, and we had an arbitrary limit of $500 CAD for foreign exchanges. When I explained that I couldn’t exchange his 1500 EUR on a whim, he flipped out and told me that we lived in a Communist country. So, without a beat, I told him that people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones… Then I proceeded to ask him to recount his country’s history from 1933 to 1945. Needless to say he got all offended and stormed out of the branch.

  7. Dr Fever I remember one time In the Dominican, a German tourist, she was a teacher & we….oh right this story has nothing to do with Bagels . But ahem, some Germans tourists are quite friendly .

  8. Me too. Danke Herr Doktor. I read once that the founders of the Baader-Meinhoff gang had the dubious distinction of being turfed out of terrorist training camps in both Libya and the Bekaa Valley. Seems their arab hosts didn’t appreciate the nude sunbathing and hash smoking between classes on how to field strip the AK-47 and improvise explosives out of donkey shit.
It’s a generalization, I know but it would seem to suggest that whether they are wearing jackboots and feldgrau or sandals and a Pere Ubu t-shirt, the Herrenvolk make lousy turistas.
    Z-man, SOBova loves your kitty.

  9. I’d love to, zZz, it would be wonderful to have it for posterity.

If that’s not off topic enough for you More, I can tell you that the laser beam is 50 years old today. On this day today, Theodore Maiman fired a laser beam at Hughes Research Labs in Malibu. Since then, the only thing Malibu has been known for is dumb white girls.

  10. the problem is they became so popular that a price war broke out and an influx of cheapass “bagels” flooded the market which aren’t bagels at all

  11. La Have bakery bagels are my favourites, you can get them at Pete’s or most SS – the Barrington one always has a decent supply.

  12. Fuck you, OP — bready bagels are the BEST.

Also: it’s pretty easy to find the bagel you’re looking for around here, so I really don’t know why you’re bitching about this. Maybe expand your search area and try looking at the grocery store?

Just don’t get them from the bulk bin — Dr Oz said that fake nails are often found at the bottom of those bins more than any other foreign object. Just putting that out there.
