  1. Ignore people like that. Let them huff and puff until they’re blue in the face. If people want to get THAT bent out of shape because they have to wait in line at an effing grocery store they have MUCH bigger problems than having to wait for a self check out.

  2. I’m a cashier and I have to say, using the self check outs are A LOT different than using a real cash. I can get you in and out pretty quickly, and yet, when I go to the self check out it takes me a lot longer. There are several reasons for this (computer interface, fact that I HAVE to put the stuff in the bag before I can scan something else, so I have to fish items out of my cart that will go with the last item packed instead of putting it aside and bagging it later, etc…), but in my opinion, unless your cashier is a dipshit (and there ARE a lot of them out there) or relatively new, it’s probably faster to go through an actual check out with a cashier, especially if you have less than 10 items, because if the self check outs slow ME down and I do this for a living….well…And, you always get people who are using the self check outs as a novelty, which makes me LOL because the novelty has LONG worn off for me 😛

  3. If self checkouts aren’t any faster, and can actually end up taking longer, what is the point of them? Other than another reason for a store to cut down on how much staff they have to hire.

  4. Also, I’m pretty sure there’s no item limit at self checkouts. If she was in that much of a hurry she should have gone through one of the express cashes.

  5. No item limit whatsoever. 25 items at a self checkout by someone who knows what they’re doing is faster than 25 items at a regular checkout.

  6. Most people don’t seem to understand that the self checkouts are not the express lanes. Sure, sometimes they’re faster, but they’re not meant to be on a general basis, which is why they still have express lanes right next to them. I can take six shopping carts through the self checkout if I just don’t want to deal with a cashier.

  7. Self serve check outs are only as fast as the inexperienced person using them. Whether a person has 5 items or 50 items is irrelevant(almost) to how fast they will be to go through. I have always paid attention to the cashiers and although not ever actually being one myself, I go through the self serve faster than the cashiers can get me through…provided the machine doesn’t flub up…which happens more than it should. I have actually let someone go ahead of me that was bitching like that…when she got all flustered and couldn’t figure it out for half her items, and I was taking my reciept and leaving, I looked over and said, “hmm, looks like you need some practice before you start bitching”…. shut her up real quick. The look was priceless! And besides, there are no limits in the self serve checkouts….go to the express lane and stfu.
