I don’t know if there’s anyone else out there who cringes at the word “asylum” or “mental patient” maybe it’s just me. I don’t understand how a society that’s come so far with acceptance, still finds room to add these two words not just in Halloween, but all over the place. People: teachers, doctors, lawyers, artists, parents, children suffer with mental illness everyday and most do it bravely alone because of the stigma we continue to perpetuate. Try explaining to a young kid struggling with bipolar why some idiot decided to dress up as an escaped mental patient and parade it around a haunted house. Or better yet, a kid who has a mom with bipolar. Why it’s okay for it to be scary. And if it is okay to depict how these people were tortured in horrendous conditions because society did not understand back then, then why don’t we dress up as other horrible parts of history? Other people who have suffered, and were probably depicted as “scary” or “bad” back in the day? It’s because we learned, and I hope that someday we learn from this, as we learned from all other lessons in history. People are people and deserve a chance. —Me

  1. People are SCARED of people with mental illness because some people with mental illness do scary fucked up shit that’s really REALLY scary and fucked up.

There are different dimensions to mental illness, but that’s what most people see.

And mental hospitals are scary ass places. I’ve never been in one (lol), but I know two who have and it was serious shit in there.

  2. Valid Bitch OP!!I feel the same!:D I think it’s really bad when it sneaks its way into commercials, and movies. No matter what way shape or form you look at it, it’s straight up discrimination and should be treated as such.

  3. Those hospitals are scary, I had a relative in one because of anxiety problems and the doctor didn’t believe that he was having seizures. This guy is a university student, a writer, and in that hospital they were all treated like animals. It was terrifying to see how backward society is in some areas, some patients were so doped up they couldn’t remember their own names. Less than 1% of govt funding goes to helping these people, and its so little because of the stigmas that still exist. And the media perpetuates the scary ones, often confusing the term “schizophrenia” with ” sociopath” the two are very different. The only harm most people suffering mental illness could ever inflict is upon themselves.

  4. you used the word “kid”. A kid is a baby goat you ageist jerk.

And “mom” is insensitive to hermaphrodite parents.

Don’t even get me started on “idiot”. Christ OP, you should know better than to use that word.

Seriously, dressing up as the devil doesn’t mean you’re a devil worshiper. Stop sounding like one of those psycho christian hallowe’en protesters and just enjoy the spook for what it is.

  5. uhm I have severe OCD and anxiety and one of my costumes this year is a Mrs. OCD/ French maid with a purse full of hand sanitizer and makeup to make my hands look bloody from washing so much. Lighten up!

  6. I wish Political Correctness could be tied to a tree and flogged with a tire iron. Having suffered life-long depression myself, a crazy psychotic mother who’s own mother ended up dying in a mental ward in Dartmouth, I still refer to that facility across the water as the ‘nut house’. Even my sister who worked at the Abbie Lane as a psychiatric nurse called it the ‘bug house’. Big fucking deal.

  7. ‘then why don’t we dress up as other horrible parts of history’

You don’t pay a whole lot of attention outside of your nutter-bubble, do you.

  8. so I shouldn’t dress up as a surgeon… all covered in blood,
because it’s offensive to anyone who’s had surgery?

    WTF?!?!

you dressing up as a Redneck is pretty fucking insensitive to me dickwad…
I deal with idiots every single day.

  9. the worst bad words are, polititions, lawyers, justice system, and of course, let’s not forget, time served.

  10. I’m from London, and I moved here to be with my longtime girlfriend. I have schizophrenia, and she warned me that stuff was pretty backwards here.I didn’t realize how backwards until I had an appointment and realized the doctors here don’t know their thumbs from their assholes. Reading the posts on this, I see a lot of people aren’t too educated about it either. Too bad.

  11. england or ontario? it’s otay ma’am/sir, if you wait long enough, it might seem like mississippi from the 50’s. not everyone is a pillock tho, so buck up

  12. I’m from London too…
it takes a while to get used to it.

Are you sure you have schizophrenia???
you sure it’s not just the others???

  13. MY OTHER VOICES TELL ME TO KILL PEOPLE, BUT THEN MY ALIEN MASTERS SAY NOT TO. WHO IS RIGHT, AND WHO SHOULD I LISTEN TO AND OBEY? MAYBE THIS GOD THING PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS GOING ON ABOUT, BUT THEN AGAIN, IS HE REAL, AND CAN YOU SEE HIM EITHER. maybe it’s just me, but i think all the rest of the worls is fucking insane, and i’m the only sane one here, or maybe we are too.

  14. STFU with that political correct stuff.

“Try explaining to a boy whose father is incarcerated why some idiot dressed up like a criminal and ran around on Halloween!”

“Try explaining to a boy who lost his father at sea why some idiot dressed up like a pirate (or fisherman) and ran around on Halloween!”

“Try explaining to a girl whose mother was slain by a serial killer why some idiot dressed up like Jason or Michael Myers and ran around on Halloween!”

“Try explaining to a child who suffers from night terrors why some idiot wore a costume and ran around scaring them on Halloween!”

“Try explaining to someone from alcoholic parents why some idiot dressed up like a wino and ran around on Halloween!”

    STFU and suck it up.

  15. What’s the problem with calling it an asylum? And since when did people consult with a “funeral director”? Bring back the undertaker.

Hailing from Death Valley, being led to the ring by Pasty White Guy, weighing in at 320lbs, The Funeral Director!

  16. Lisababe: wtf are you rambling about you fucking dumb blonde? Go suck a cock and see if you can get a starring role in Ol’ Sucker’s snuf film. It’s probably the only worthwhile thing you’ll do in your life.

  17. c’mom big, play nice, she made an opinion, and that’s what this page is here for. whether or not she be right or wrong, i support her right to say exactly what she wants to. as i do for you too. we all have a different outlook on shit, and hers is that it is not alright to dress as some things, on that night. how about people dressing as cornwallis, would it piss off the native peoples, you bet. and we can all imagine what a white gown and pointed hat would bring on. time to get with the flow, and chill the fuck out dude.

  18. I don’t know how one dresses up like a mental patient. Sorry to use the term but is it much different from cancer patient? I know people in the Nova Scotia Hospital and I’ve been there (as part of my job capacity) and, really, there’s no one way a patient there looks. I agree there is a stigma associated with mental illness and people sometimes are a little insensitive with some of their remarks but Halloween is one of those occasions where the boundaries of taste can get trampled. Even the Royal lads dressed up like Nazis one time.

  19. Fuck that dumb blonde. That’s my opinion and I’m entitled to it. I’m just bitching like everyone else. Didn’t mean to drag you into my comment though, Uncle Sucks.

  20. What’s next – banning fisherman costumes because someone may have lost a loved one at sea? Banning convict costumes because someone might have an incarcerated family member? Banning Jason masks because they are insensitive to those who have lost loved ones to serial killers?

  21. My Halloween costume is going to be a white dude with my scalp cut off with a name tag saying “settler/victim.”

The b-plan is a Hitler costume with a name tag saying, “Grandfather of Israel.”

  22. For entertainment, try heading down to the Tim Horton’s near the NS Hospital. You’ll almost feel guilty at how hard you want to laugh when you see one of those nut jobs talking to a glass window, petting the trees, and or best yet trying to hump the chairs inside. Truly hilarious. Maybe they could attend some of the circus lessons in Burnside.

  23. For entertainment, try heading down to Menz Bar near the boxing place. You’ll almost feel guilty at how hard you want to laugh when you see one of those nut jobs hitting on straight males, trying to pet married men walking by, and or best yet trying to hump the chairs inside. Truly hilarious. Maybe they could attend some of the rehab centre in Dartmouth.

  24. I don’t like a particular brand of car but those fuckers at Access NS keep licensing them…

FFS we all get that whole back in history thing. Where do you draw the line? Don’t dress as the devil that may offend every single big-C christian (and Muslims??). Don’t dress as a serial killer as some of us are victims of crime. Don’t dress with a pumpkin head or people may think you are Lady Gaga…

  25. D, that would imply that Disney lawyers need some sort of justification or pretext to sue. They do it for shits and giggles.

On the other hand, pray you never have to deal with IBM lawyers. There’s a reason they’re called the Nazgul.

  26. ‘The b-plan is a Hitler costume with a name tag saying, “Grandfather of Israel.”‘

Holy shit! You went in there? You get closer and closer to following through on your murderous fantasies every day.

The proprietors should be warned about you.

I personally knew a guy stabbed to death by someone like you. He stabbed him 29 times for being gay. 29 times.

What you are doing here is not funny, and while you tell yourself you are pretending and that it is all a ‘blog/forum persona’, it is clear that you have real issues. I swear it is only a matter of time before you kill someone.
