I drive the 101 to get to work and everyday I drive the same way.
The posted speed limit is 110km in most places.
I drive 100km because for me its safer.
I dont care that people pass me, Im glad I’m not in the “main group” of cars passing and driving like idiots.
So most days I and the only vehicle thats going 100km, so there isn’t an issue with people being too close.
However, I leave a space when I start getting to heavy on ramp areas so if I have to stop quick for any reason (deer, other animals, Road garabe, crazy drivers trying to merge etc) I have the safe amount of space needed.
This rant is for all those idiots that pass me to get the one spot ahead and take away my buffer zone, and most don’t even use the blinker when they zoom into the opening.
What is your problem? Where are the police when they are needed?
Daily I see near misses of accidents, people too close to other bumpers while zooming and forcing their ways into spaces, for what.. to get one car ahead .. I see people so close at times you cannot even see their bumpers, or pulling out without looking and almost causing an accident to the person who was already in that lane, speeding so fast they are out of site in minutes.
You know what people, I take plates, makes, models of vehicles and I call it into the police, I have no time for idiots, My kids, family and friends all travel these roads and I will make it safer one car at a time if I have to. —Not the only vehicle driving 100km on the 101

OB, you make the roads unsafe by driving slower than the speed limit, hence different than “the main group”, therefore creating inconsistencies in traffic patterns. You’re probably the same kind of asshole who undermines the rules of the road to stop and let people in and be a nice guy, further fucking up regulated traffic. I do, however, hate people who do not signal as well, I think that probably causes one of the biggest problems in city driving
Why do so many people misunderstand the meaning of “speed limit”? The OB is well within their right to go 10 km/h under the “LIMIT”. For the most part the 101 is a four lane divided highway, so as long as OB is always in the right hand lane it should not be a problem for anyone.
I understand the danger of someone going extremely slow on a road with no passing lane, but they are talking about driving in a 110 km/h zone on the 101 which is clearly four lanes.
OB is just trying to drive safe and make sure that they get home alive, however I have a feeling most people on here will back the aggressive drivers.
Take the old highway, FFS!
” The posted speed limit is 110km in most places.”
Maybe the section YOU drive, but that is actually quite false.
I agree with most of the rest of the bitch but…
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RDzKo27szaw/Teod…
I think people should drive to the conditions, if its foggy and you cannot see the car in front of you maybe it isn’t such a great idea to go blasting through at 110km.
There are deer on the highway daily running into the traffic, Have you ever been behind someone that hit a deer? it usually flies up over the vehicle that hit it and slams into the one behind it, happened to a friend the other day. I’ve seen it several other times in the past as well.
I was almost rear ended because someone was on my rear end so close I couldn’t see the front bumper of that car and I had to stop quick because someone pulled in front of me with no blinker.
Seems people only care about themselves and not the well being of other people they put in danger.
The speed limit goes from 110km, 100km, 90km to 110km back to 100km all over the 101. Starting up the valley to the city.
I had someone doing probably (I’m guessing) 110km pass me on a double line in the 90km zone around Windsor the other day. I was going the posted speed limit so it wasn’t like I was going slower then normal.
Anyway, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Good or bad, I think this poster makes a good point here and there.
Happy safe driving all.
Right on, Keg, it is a speed LIMIT not the speed you have to drive. For instance, if I drive my DeLoren more than 100, I’ll end up in the year 2087. There’s just some things I don’t want to see.
I totally understand your point OP about wanting to leave a buffer area ahead of you, but as long as the passing car is not cutting you off, he or she has every right to go ahead of you. The rule of thumb is as long as you can see the entire front end of the car in your rearview mirror, it is ok to cut in front.
Danimal, i agree with the idea but 100 in a 110 zone isn’t dangerous. 70 in a 110 zone is dangerous.
Also explain how “inconsistencies in traffic patterns” cause accidents on the highway. The LAW is that you can’t tailgate on the highway so if you come up fast on someone doing 10-20 km/hr less than you, you have PLENTY of time to slow down/pass/otherwise avoid without dying or killing.
He’s not talking about city driving at all. (I agree with you in that case btw) but HIGHWAY DRIVING. Hence the title “Bad drivers on the 101”
And you op. The biggest problem on most of the rural 101 is the lack of split highways, not slow vs fast drivers. Admit it, don’t you feel safer once you get past windsor and miserably horrified anywhere near greenwood?
And Keg? Yes. Speed limit usually means the upper limit but on the highway there is a lower limit too. You cannot travel under… i think it’s 75.. without 4-way flashers and a good reason.
My father said it most rationally. You shouldn’t go faster than you’re comfortable going but if you’re not comfortable going at highway speeds, exit the highway because you’re being a nuisance.
There is a middle ground here.
Just because you do 10kms less than the speed limit doesn’t necessarily mean you’re being “safe”. There are times when not keeping up with the flow of traffic can be just as dangerous as speeding. Furthermore, if you don’t feel comfortable doing the speed limit, you obviously don’t have the confidence needed to make split second decisions, and an indecisive driver is one of the most dangerous drivers on the road.
Slow drivers are just as much a hazard as “fast” drivers. If’n you have a fucking parade behind you, YOU’RE the problem. Every 100 series highway in this province has a secondary road running adjacent to it, if you wanna fuckin’ dawdle along in your own little dreamworld, use the secondary road, saves on the aggravation by you AND by everyone else. If you refuse to comply with common sense in this regard, then your bitch is a moot point OB.
I totally disagree that slow drivers are more dangerous than speeders. They may be more annoying but far less dangerous. Speed is the cause of most fatal accidents and impatience of most accidents in general.
I am not the OP but I do travel the 101 regularly and I find most travel at speeds exceeding the speed limit (110) by ten to twenty kph. The twinning of the highway has opened up speeds to quite a degree. Is it safer? I doubt it.
That said, if OP feels unsafe he/she should either find a driver or travel the #1 highway.
The old road takes FOREVERRRRR to get to Halifax.
Even though the 101 is only twinned to St Croix-ish, I don’t find any ‘dangerous’-feelin’ spots until you get past Kentville, to be honest. I’d rather travel from Kentville-New Minas-Wolfville-Hantsport-Windsor to Halifax than Greenwood-Kingston-Berwick-Cambridge-Coldbrook to Kentville/New Minas on the highway… and then again, it doesn’t seem THAT bad to take the old road from those places to Kentville/New Minas.
And thank frig they fixed the second exit to Hantsport (8A) from that awful AWFUL intersection. I always felt like we were taking our lives into our hands every time we made a left hand turn on a 100 series high way.
Also, Reg, if I might ask… what general area do you live in in the valley?
Because if the area’s where I think it may be, I probably know who ya are (or at least have a good idea).
reguardless of personal opinions of how safe or unsafe it is at 100 or 110 or 120 …what’s more unsafe than causing an obstruction in a flow of fast moving vehicles ?
WHen several thousand pounds of metal & glass are moving at a rate of speed & that object is moving at or close to the same speed as many other objects, putting a single obstruction in the path of those objects is STUPID. Its Not Safe …it is as far from safe as you can get, its literally about as stupid as you can be.
When traffic is light , I can see that there is no problem on a divided highway for the faster moving vehicle to get by. When its in heavy volume rush hour traffic, its a game of Russian roulette with the chance of horrifying consequences … & OB you should do yourself & Everyone else a favor get off the highway & take the old road or a bike trail or let someone who is a more comfortable/capable driver drive. The life you save could very well be your own !
Get with the program! Learn how to drive! Just be happy you don’t have to drive in Montreal, or Europe, or the US…heck, anywhere else but here….
I live in Falmouth just outside of Windsor P “MCMMMMM” K.
Ahhhh I thought you lived in Hantsport (my old hood), Reg. I have no idea who you are now 😉
Good job…why don’t you get that parking wars app and become a contract meter-maid too!
That’s funny, Reg. I grew up in Falmouth, went to Windsor Forks elementary.
Just get a dash cam and be done with it.
Also if the OP wants to drive 10 under the speed limit, it’s their right and their way of keeping themselves safe. It doesn’t endanger others and isn’t much of an inconvenience so people have to learn to suck it up.
