Yeah, I can’t stand overbearing mommies either. Be aware and polite people and keep some of the junk at home.On the other hand, I also can’t stand b*tchy little self righteous, servers who act like children themselves when faced with anything more than a table of adults they can turnover ASAP at lunch and make as much money on as possible. Like it or not, the world has kids in it (it’s how we survive as a species dontchaknow), they are difficult to deal with at times and raising them is an important job. If you don’t like certain aspects of your job or you feel undervalued because the liberal arts degree turned out to be as useless as Dad said then get a new one and cut the decent parents some slack.
As a father who tries hard to keep his rowdy 2.5 year old well in hand whenever we venture out in public, I agree that there really are few things more annoying than parents who let their kids run wild in restaurants, stores, coffee shops, etc.However, as someone who has worked both in real restaurants and in coffee shops, I’ve got to say SOBMT’s bitch is pretty weak. They took up 2 tables with their accessories! Oh the horror! I’d rather deal with mothers of young kids (who typically spend more money and drop more change in the tip jar) than cheap, surly college students or anal-retentive morning commuters. Grow up and remember that the customer is always right.

This is, of course, a bitch segment of the paper, so probabalistically, one would expect that over time, a bitch will surface about every conceivable topic. However, the Bitch section has been around for only a finitely small amount of time, and in this time, there have been an alarming number of bitches about babies and small children. It does not seem like the random, expected bitch, but that there is a significant trend – a portion of society so surly, that they actually bitch about babies! I am quite in shock.Babies and small children have lots of things. They cannot just sit around, quietly staring at the wall or thinking. Likewise, parents would probably become pretty derranged if they were forced to limit themselves to purely baby activities. Hence, a mom or dad – on occasion – will get out for a cup of coffee or whatever. Have some consideration, and expect that a place like a coffee house is open to all of society; moms and dads, babies and rowdy toddlers, teens with too much energy; students, professionals, the elderly, and so on.
I don’t understand this odd backlash against children by so many. Sure, they may not be the best company for cocktails and steak tartar but I’ll agree there seems to be some real hatred for children in general out there.Kids can be louder, messier and yeah less fun than adults but we do have a certain degree of responsibility to understand this. Idiot parents are no fun for anyone but sometimes there is a real undercurrent of kid dislike in society that disturbs me.

I’ve got no problem with that. I cannot stand wild kids and parents that accomodate it. I was in the service business myself years ago and nearly tripped over two kids playing (behind the bar on a sunday brunch) while carrying a huge tray of food and drinks. Besides really hurting myself I could have potentially killed one or both of them and I don’t need that. That sort of crap is completely wrong and should not be tolerated.Truthfully though, I still smell the scent of kid-hate out there and think it’s sad. Sometimes I wonder if people just resent kids for not being as slick/cool as other “accessories” or if they just see parents as “mindless breeders” akin to animals. Well that’s pretty sick in itself.
I find it rather unsettling how many times the word “brats” has been used in reference to children in not only this particular bitch, but others that have surfaced in the past. In all of this, I see such contempt by a very angry working class population in this city. The whole thing about parents and SUVs and Starbucks is growing a little tired. You know, that portion of society that has a few extra bucks, provides their children with nice things, and treats themselves to a nice car, had to work hard to get where they are. I am probably the type of person you tend to bitch about. But, I had to spend nearly a decade with less expendable cash then someone working minimum wage. I made many financial and personal sacrifices to establish myself and my business. Now, if I want to give my children nice things, waste ten dollars on a coffee, or drive a good vehicle, what’s wrong with that? If you were in the position to do so, would you not do the same? Next time you want to bitch about children, at least take the time to think of the real reason, and bitch about that. It is not the kids, but the income gap and lifestyle that seem to be your bitches. That’s fine, and a very valid bitch.
goodparent…read the writting on the wall. It’s not the kids! it’s the parents who just think/choose/hope that if they bring their kids in public they don’t have to disapline their kids. Parents like this are the ones who are giving their kids everything and teaching them nothing! it is child abuse and producing a crappiy future so to speak. I love children and wish someone would teach a course on how to be a healthy responsible parrent. but unfortunately it is a cycle gaining momentum.
Kids belong at home, in a park, McDonalds playroom or any other kid oriented place.You want to go to a coffee shop and live in the world of adults for a couple hours – get a babysitter!

I agree with Sheesh! in ways.I too went many years with far less than friends because fo school, taking crap jobs at first, etc. Huge sacrifices were made while I watched others take vacations to Jamaica and go on $800 weekends to PEI. Now that life is finally coming into a place where I can afford a car that doesn’t belch smoke, I can buy decent clothing and realistically raise a family that doesn’t have to live in crap, I’ve somehow “sold out” and become some big A-hole that is arrogant and condecending because of a car choice or the fact that I can actually afford to take the family out on Sunday?!?!I think a lot of this kid/lifestyle resentment is tied up in jealousy and sour grapes. Well it’s probably a seperate b*tch in itself but…..screw you. We all made our choices.
i personally do not agree that kids do not belong in a cafe- how the hell else can a parent relax with a tea or what not -while still being able to spend some time with their kids? the point is not income, it’s discipline! I don’t care if you drive a Jag with platium rims and you are giving your children gold fuckin’ soother’s- teach them to respect and appreciate what they have -who they are – and what they mean in the world! i think someone who was has worked hard to have things in life should be respected and if you have something to show for it – this can be a goal for others to stive for. Sheesh- it sounds like you have a chip on you shoulder that you are looking DOWN at, I may be wrong but that is how it sounded to us here at My office.
The original Bitch wasn’t about the bus driver…it was about the bigoted asshole standing at the bus stop with the Bitcher (I work with the Bitcher…I’ve heard the whole story). HOWEVER, I do agree with you about bus drivers…self-righteous pompous gits that they are. You drive a BUS, you’re not king of the world…and how about kicking off people that are being loud and offensive instead of keeping people in fear…ie…DO YOUR JOB!!
