Call it what you like, authentic or ethnic, but several restaurants in HRM claim to serve such food, whether it be Greek, Indian, Thai, or Middle Eastern, but they fail to mention that their menus are “westernized” to the North American palette. Do they seriously think we can’t handle the real food? Do they assume that most people have not traveled to the countries they claim to be serving authentic recipes and food from? Some people travel extensively, and I can tell you a fair portion of these places in Halifax are NOT authentic. Give your chefs a few slaps upside the head and get them preparing what we expect. —CheckPlease

yea i was not overly impressed with the Hali dining scene
NEWS FLASH:
You live in a western country!
You probably can’t even get half the ingredients here to make real “ethnic” food. Not to mention, I highly doubt that if say…. an Asian restaurant… decided to serve the real deal, that hanging fish outside to dry for a week, or however long, would go over well.
Nor do I think putting paper bags up in the entrance to discourage flies from coming in, or serving some “anijing” would fly with the general western population.
I do think we do have some pretty good options for places to eat considering.
I love tenacious Indian. There food reminds me of this outdoor food market place I use to go to. And you should have seen how excited I was when I realized a certain Thai place served deep fried banana. That was a childhood favorite.
But if they did, yuou would complain they were using dog, cat, monkey brains, etc.
of course its authentic, its made by authentic chinese canadians.
That’s what anijing means in English Bro Tim :p
what really is this food you talk about o.p.? is it something that isn’t fake or phoney? or is it just ordinary, everyday shit, that is made a different way?
So if you go to a certain restaurant and see “Brindi; complete with fries OR cole slaw only $17.99” don’t come crying to me.
How about calling whatever they are dishing out “Artificially Authentic”? Truly authentic would help reduce the pigeon and feral cat population in Halifax. How’s Taco Bell doing with their meat-dispute? Where’s that chihuahua?
I didn’t know that a Western-located restaurant had to remind people that it is in fact, located in the West. If you want authentic restaurants, look them up! There are several that serve authentic cuisine and will have it posted everywhere they can as it is a draw for certain people. That’s so lazy Westerner of you :).
If you’re that damn picky cook your own “authentic” meals then. Frig.
OP, you don’t have to have travelled extensively to know that most ethnic food is westernized! I’ve travelled too but not to Vietnam (yet), however I still know the vermicelli, for example, is served heated her because westerners are used to warm entrees. And it doesn’t take a genius to know that alot of westerners aren’t going to be fond of working up their appetites with a plate of crunchy palm grubs before sitting down to a congolese dinner!
No…nothing against congolese food; I’d try them if I had the chance. Maybe they think prawns are gross!
…and NO, OP; “most people” have NOT travelled to these countries. For someone who claims to have travelled extensively, you sure don’t sound very wordly…although judging by your post, you desperately want us to believe you are!
You are the worst.
