There should be a law against companies who throw out perfectly edible food – while we’re at it, make restaurant owners eat their own wretched overpriced slop – I had a steak recently that had more gristle than Courtney Love’s ass – come to find out that if you want a steak well done, you’re gonna get the worst cut. Next time I’m asked how I want my steak cooked, I’ll have to tell ’em Tampexworthy.
Companies throw away food if it’s expired or damaged because food banks generally won’t accept that stuff or won’t give it away to people. They are liable if someone gets sick from eating expired/damaged food products. It is a waste but it does make sense.
I overheard two well-meaning but dense ladies on the bus bragging about how they found mold on their bread so they gave it to the food bank. Had to shake my head.

maybe op is an impoverished student….when my brother was in university he lived on peanut butter and dinner invites. the guy can probably get online in the library, no problem with that idea. probably on a very very tight budget and can buy only essentials foodstuff. rice, beans. a caf sandwich or muffin would be a nice treat, but he couldn’t justify spending $3 on it when he could eat rice and beans for days on that $3.
No, Molly, I think they genuinely thought that they had done something nice, they seemed to be the sort of people who would never have the occasion to visit or know someone who’d have visited a food bank. Was a great resource for me in my late teens/early twenties. You’re right, being a student/young adult can be challenging when it comes to maintaining a budget. One can only eat canned soup and oatmeal for so long 😉
