I can’t believe the number of restaurants that feature “asian salad” or “oriental salad” on their menus. I would expect more from the hip and vegetarian restaurants where such items are featured. How we use language is important, especially if our city wants to shake its backwater image. —Flabbergasted

  1. How we use language *is* important, OB. That being said, there’s nothing hip about vegetarianism.

  2. So I guess you also have beef with Greek salad? How about Italian dressing? I think having the nationality in the name means something about the flavors/ingredients used and not because it actually contains Asians or Greeks, or whatever…

    Ivan: lol!

  3. Hey. It’s not “Chink salad” or “Slopehead salad”.( oh, Jesus. I feel horrible for writing this shit, just to prove a point- I am sincerely sorry)
So no Canadian bacon, English muffin, or whatevs?
And Donarius is right- there IS nothing hip about vegetarian etc.
Get over yourself, OP. It’s food.

  4. Why isn’t OP complaining about all the “Chinese” restaurants out there that don’t even serve food that’s even remotely close to Chinese cuisine?

    Why? Because OP’s a dink.

  5. Maybe OP thinks that “asian” is derogatory, because “asian” is too huge of a place. There are so many different peoples and cultures… if it was a chinese salad, or vietnamese salad or thai salad, maybe that would be different. I dunno. I don’t really care as long as it’s tasty.

  6. yeah, but they refer to us as ‘westerners’ and I sure as hell know I’m no yank. and i actually shave my arm pits, so I know I’m not french.

    😀

    also: how’s the new house?

  7. New from McDonalds…The all new Round-Eye Salad, featuring crisp Boston Lettuce, English Cucumber, Canadian Bacon bits, Georgia Peach slices, Beefsteak tomatoes and California raisins, all topped with fresh, shredded American cheese and covered in a non-descript, edible petroleum-based, plain salad dressing. Round-Eye salad…Obnoxiously good…only at McDonalds!
    Ba-dum-bum-bum bahh…I’m Lovin’ it!

Anyone take exception to any of that? No? I didn’t think so. Fuck off OB.

  8. a salad by any other name, is just rabbit food for some humans.grab a nice big steak, and slap it on the barby.

  9. that was very clever clint^^what about newfie steaks? does that offend you oceanchickpeasis?

  10. PK: The new house is great! Spent the weekend tearing out carpets, old lady curtains, painting and just cleaning up. It’ll be another week of solid work then we’ll move in. Green carpets in the bathroom – imagine! And brown carpets in the halls and on the stairs covering lovely hardwood. All gone!:D

I’ve never been to Asia – do they advertise “north american” burgers or “european” sausages?

Meh, who cares? As long as I’m not eating newfie steaks, I’m happy. heh heh.

  11. Nothing wrong with Newfie steak…mmmmm….put a little green tomato chow or mustard pickles on top….NOW we’re talkin! Yes Bye!

  12. if you put pineapple on it, is it hawaiian newfie steak? when we bought our house, ralmn, it had this odd smell. it was the 50 yr old carpet and rotting underpadding, which we had to scrap off with a shovel^^

  13. fuck the rabbit food, give me a nice big hunk of dead animal. you can use the salad to fatten it up.like al bundy said one time, put some kind of dead animal on the table, peg.

  14. it’s “yes b’y” haha…
I don’t get offended with Newfie steak. I just get offended when people say “stupid newfie”… not cool!

  15. newfie steak, wish i had about 5 pounds of that right about new. mmmmm, fried with onions, mmmmm.

  16. i less than three all my newfie friends, i could put fried onions on anything suckulous. vidalia onions are the best

  17. “Ehm-maz” Restaurant in Eastern Passage, (or, as the locals call it…the Pass-auge), serves a mighty fine breaky, and fried Newfie steak is one of the choices for accompanying breakfast meat!mmmmm. They also used to do a full Jigs dinner too. Not sure if they still do. Also not sure if they do an Asian salad either. lol EXCELLENT place if anyone is interested.

  18. “vegetarian restaurants” … silly grass munchers. PETA is best…..People Eating Tasty Animals. Now go fire up that BBQ.

  19. —-spent the weekend tearing out carpets—–

Man, can’t wait to tear up someone’s carpets…

  20. Spot on PurpleFire, maid! I don’t mind being called a Newfie but I object to the derogatory term ‘stupid newfie’ too. Fish, being brainfood and the staple diet for generations of we Newfs, make stupidity a physiological impossibilty, haha! Foolishness, on the otherhand…hehe!

As a former omnivore I have eaten my fair share of Newfie steak, with a side of mustard and a pair of panfried eggs…mmm…mmm…mmmmmmm!

  21. do you eat cheese or fish oceansis? i can live without the flesh but would have trouble giving up eggs

  22. Fuck off OB, nobody takes offense when a salad is named after their culture. It’s part of “Asian” cuisine, it only means that some spices in the dressing, and possibly some of the veggies are native to or mainly used by Asian people. If recognizing a certain culture for their affinity for tasty food makes us all backwater hillbillies, then I guess I can throw out my toothbrush and deoderant, and get a couple of good shootin cars for the front yard. Yeehaww!!!!

  23. paingirl-sis, I do not eat cheese. I do sometimes eat fish, mostly shellfish like clams or scallops. I am a very non-preachy ethical vegetarian. I choose not to eat flesh from the meat industry because I think there are better nutritional choices than eating some poor animal that has suffered it’s whole life just tp provide a meal for me. Choices like eggs or shellfish are eaten on rare occasions. Does that make me a hippocrate? I don’t care. Nor do I care if others choose to eat meat. In answer to your earlier question, which I just caught, no newfie steaks do not offend me. We grew up eatin’ ’em.

  24. thanks for the info, my data banks still have loads of room. you, like me love to cook and the possibilities are endless. i have a moroccan cookbook that calls for hind leg of camel…or a substitute. yeah no kidding, tho they are a very useful beast, in many ways…lamb keftas were a favourite with the gang
