Buying an aquarium?… Don’t go buying the fancy colored gravel they try to sell you for 20 bucks a bag. It looks dumb. Go to a nice clean beach and get some nice and naturally rounded granite beach rocks of different sizes and colors. I got a bag full and placed them strategically on the bottom of my aquarium. It looks fucking AWESOME… the fish love it and it looks natural. Easy to get, fun to go get them, cheaper, and you have a cool looking aquarium. Your fish will thank you. So will your wallet. — I paid enough for the fish and shit that goes with it

Mostly I’m just being contrary 😉 Technically it’s an offense, I guess it’s an anonymous posting and pretty low priority in the grand scheme of things offense-wise so OP likely won’t see any trouble, just saying, gotta be careful who you brag about your aquarium supply savings to when it comes to beach combing for decorations etc!
For the sake of all that is good and legal, i shall dust the sand off my balls the next time i go to the beach

I remember as a kid, I had relatives looking for cool rocks for the garden (and quite a bit of them) and being a little nervous about being seen taking them! Obviously, this bit of legalese is to prevent people from taking lots/big stuff from beaches which is what is actually harmful. OP’s post just got me thinkin’ and googlin’, is all.
I recall as a young one my parents built the biggest sandbox in the city and FILLED IT with sand from one of the local beaches …. yeah, definitely awesome! So, the neighbours complained about the FUN happening and some folk from city hall sent someone to check on this contraband sand. Sure enough, it was not allowed as it was crown property or some such nonsense. Yep, they removed the sand.
So, not to be outdone by sandbaggerz, my Dad built a larger sandbox and ordered a truck load of sand (bagged with a company logo) put in a slide and a couple of teeter-totters (seesaws) and then a wading pool. Our yard filled up with three times the number of kids hanging out….. moral of the story, don’t fuck with the kidz or Daddy will bury you with sand and make sure the level of fun was at an optimum high for the enjoyment of ALL the neighbours. Now we get to enrich our neighbours lives with grandkidz …. LOVE SUMMER!
Some moron always finds something to say about a decent post to shoot it down. “Sand on my balls”… So true eh? Wouldn’t want to commit a federal offense by leaving the beach with sand on my nut sac. How do I know the fish like the accommodations? None have requested a visit to the psychiatrist, committed suicide,or filed a grievance, and they all have huge grins on their faces. By the way… sitting in the dark with just the aquarium lit up and watching the fish swim around is cheap therapy and is very relaxing. I highly recommend it.

Ok fair enough. Being a staunch devil’s advocate, I see where you’re coming from. Also i was feeling a little bit sensitive since about 75% of my home decor was plundered from a beach.

LOL runsWithScissors one time we had relatives from Quebec visiting and we went beach combing on a rocky beach near where I’m from. Mum found some very interesting looking sea sponge and she took it with us. After we were done walking the beach, we all piled into the van. A few minutes down the road, the van was absolutely FULL of crazy little bugs! UTTERLY AND COMPLETELY full. Out the window the sea sponge went…

“Plundering” aside, I seem to remember from having an aquarium years ago that store-bought pebbles and decor have an adjusted PH balance, and that “untreated” items (like beach sand, pebbles, etc.) can contain substances that can leach into the water and potentially kill your fish.
Personally, if I were back into buying expensive fish, I’d be buying expensive accessories so as not to kill my investment… But that’s just me.
The PH deal is a shit scam. You always have to be checking the PH in your tank regardless of the rocks. The ones in the store are “Treated”? With what? A special chemical that coats the rocks so they don’t leach and change PH? It’s all baloney and a sales scam. They crush up granite, dye it with special chemicals and tell you it is ‘treated”. How can natural rocks from the habitat of fish be bad for them and “Special Treated Rocks” be good for them? It is a scam folks. And my fish are still smiling. Actually playing in the bubbles from the bubbler. Back and forth, up and down. It’s a whoot!
“Adjusted PH”. Baloney. It’s a scam. They crush up granite and treat it with dyes to color it and sell it to ya and charge premium prices. A person has to check the PH in their tank all the time anyways cause it fluctuates… for example the water you use in it, the fish waste, plants in it, etc. all play a role in PH. There is PH adjuster (another bunch of shit to scam people on.) Change the water frequently… problem solved. If you can get rain water from the sky it is best. Anyways… my fish are still smiling and having a blast playing in the bubbler.
