It’s the world’s greatest departure lounge. That must be why I wanted to leave after ten minutes. —Not liking some architect’s wet dream.

De gustibus non est disputandum.
My only hope is that the comfy chairs have been treated with long lasting bedbug repellent.
It is a bold design, so to the average Haligonian, that means frightening change. I love it.
THE WORLD’S LARGEST DEPARTURE LOUNGE?
Just wait until they get some books!

A Pleasure as always,
Cheerio!
I haven’t been to the new H^lif^x Regional Departure lounge yet but I did see the picture of the escalators and glass walls and empty book shelves in the paper. It looks rather cold and sterile and unfeeling… like a big shopping mall without any stores or something, doesn’t look like a very fun place to hang out.
Speaking of fun, sitting here chugging hot coffee to try to dislodge the huge Advil Liquid Gel stuck in my throat like a giant cock this morning! Couldn’t they make those fucking horse pills a bit more aerodynamic? It hurts every time I try to swallow. Like PMS isn’t enough to contend with! FML mafuckas, FML.
love the design of the building. not my cup of tea for a library though. I’d like something like a castle or English club library. big comfy leather wing chairs, fireplaces, dark panelling. a couple of old hunting dogs snoring on the floor.
depends what the library will be used for and by whom.
I think its suitable for the new crop of humans. grew up in malls, lots of hard reflective surfaces, noise.
Does it break the record for library with the least amount of books or does the Clayton Park one still hold that?
Why are people still reading books?
^If Perezita didn’t blog it, I ain’t interested.
Looks fairly good as libraries go…in the 21st century!
How do people know if their flight is on time or not? They forgot this: https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8174/788581…
The cranky people who hate change and expect the librarian to shush people for talking can always go to another library. We can’t alllow nostalgia for a bygone era to hold everyone back.
Personally, I hated the old building and found the stink of rotting, improperly kept books that permeated the place kind of wretched. One trip thorugh the new library and seeing how delighted people are tells me that it’s absolutely what we needed. The spaciousness allows people to browse through and have conversations without feeling like they are imposing on anyone. It really is an awesome facility.
Now I can’t wait for the new YMCA to be built!
The hobos that used the Old Library to pass the day must love this one, what with the big tvs and all that.
Chairman Meow, totally agreed, the old building was a dump. Every other library I’ve been to has been more pleasant.
Mr Meaty, as to why people still read books, it’s mainly because many of us – albeit from older generations – are still able to read, plus not all human knowledge and wisdom is available on the Internet.
I think someone^^^ doesn’t understand sarcasm…
I must agree, the new library is about as charming as a surgical instrument. Sterile and contemporary, yet also tasteless in that bland Marxist way( who in their right mind would pair orange and gray?), that pervasive rot that is spreading through North American so-called society and beyond…..
Fox,
Don’t lose sight of what is truly important. The new building has instantly become a focal point of community and a downtown oasis. Every time i have been there it has been packed with very happy looking people – something I could never say about the old library. It’s a lot like the Oval – it creates a lot of pleasure. In that regard, despite any umbrage you may take with the architecture or decor, it is a raving success.
Cat,
I was simply presenting a visual observation regarding the sophomore distastefulness of its interior design, not illuminating, as you so did, the moral qualities of such an establishment… I threw the baseball to left-field and you abruptly began to play soccer with it as it were… if I asked your opinion on the weather would you then proceed to tell me what you like on your pizza?
First the skating oval, now the new library, and very soon the new YMCA–I can’t wait! These are GREAT projects for bringing a vibrant community life back to downtown Halifax.
