I hate you. You make me think irrationally with no room to grasp the reality of the situation. You make me miss work, you make me sick. You make me think that something so minor is a catastrophic problem. I just want to be able to process thoughts clearly without thinking that every little thing in my life is the end of everything. I even have anxiety attacks about paying for a psychologist to help me with this… Geeeze. —Anxious

  1. psychologists are overpaid. you should find things to help, paintings and hula hooping (good excercise) always help me, find something you like and try not to sweat the small stuff. probably not as easy as it sounds but if you keep busy doing things you like it probably couldn’t hurt, right?

  2. I used to have anxiety, but it went away one day. I found little things in myself that made me feel confident, and I just ran with it. The key is to not give a flying fuck about what other people think of you. Vitamin D is supposed to help also.

  3. Dino, I had a teacher who swung the other way….
he snapped and cursed out his class for the whole hour and was promptly admitted to the psych ward for months.

he’s still not right, but he’s ‘right’ enough they let him out.
Damn he used to be cool though…

  4. i know the feeling…my mind never slows down, I worry about EVERYTHING all the time, I have trouble breathing, I get frustrated easily, everyday minor things just make my head want to explode…i feel your pain. 🙁 I’m sure you have already, but in the off chance you haven’t, do a google search for GAD, there are some websites with good tips and information about Generalized Anxiety Disorder… good luck

  5. You gotta learn to chill out.
Roll a big fattie, or give Weedhog a yell.
    Pour a tall stiff one & R E L A X !
Remember you’re a smart, , independant, beautiful & important person. One of a kind, & no one can take that away from you . You’ve come this far in life it will get better. So as the name of the song says, don’t worry, be happy. ~:)
    have a great day .

  6. I kinda feel your pain. I don’t get anxiety attacks often, but every couple months trival shit sets me off.
Take deep breathes, if you smoke have a cigarette, listen to some music, maybe go outside?
Worst case scenario, get some medication

  7. I’m with More on this one – I’ve successfully managed my depression with a holy rollie for over 35 years – sure beats the fuck out of antidepressents (been there, done that fucking mindnumbing shit). And just remember this worn-out mantra of mine: ‘Your thoughts are NOT reality’.

  8. More: people with GAD *can’t* just chill out — that’s the problem. It seems completely irrational to worry about the things they do, and most know this, but they just can’t stop. The worst part about GAD, aside from the sometimes crippling anxiety, is the ridiculousness of the whole situation.

Have you ever thought about going on medication, OP? I know medication gets bitched about and people go on about how those on meds are weak/lazy/unwilling to deal with their problems, however, that’s because doctors give that shit out like candy these days — all you really have to do is say you’re sad a lot and you’ll get a prescription for paxil. It’s ridiculous.

However, some people just can’t control their anxiety without medication; they’ve gone the therapy route and they NEED the medication. I have a panic disorder along with GAD and I ended up in the emerg once from a panic attack that wouldn’t go away. I had been on paxil for about 5 years and decided I wanted OFF meds. 8 months later I was back on medication after going to therapy and still having attacks. I would be on the bus — fine one minute — then the next I was scared shitless of literally nothing. This time I’m not on paxil (paxil is like the mother of all ADs — that shit’ll make you worry about NOTHING. Seriously: NOTHING) and they don’t work as hardcore as paxil so I still worry about what SHOULD be worried about.

  9. Pot can help, but it’s only a short term solution and creates a reliance on the drug, much like any other psychoactive drug… The same goes for any mood evener.

You need to get to the source of the anxiety. Find the source of stress and destroy it (figuratively, that is). This should alleviate the problem, but it wont get rid of it. Anxiety disorders don’t really go away. They’re either a function of a chemical imbalance that you can’t control, or a series of environmental behavioral issues that may or may not be within your control. Don’t stress it.

Good luck, either way. It’s a tough go.

  10. Is that you Gucky (OP)? Sounds like you. I hope you’re alright.

Remember what I told you about my Mom? She had crippling anxiety for years. She was on meds, off meds, tried a special diet, tried yoga and meditation. All that stuff only helped in the short term. She told me that by the time she turned thirty (and had a little more life experience) it basically went away. You’ll learn to see your anxiety for what it is; a very ancient instinctual response to stress that preps us for “fight or flight”. Basically, at its core its the fear of death. Its the same feeling you get when you feel threatened or scared, except in the chronically anxious it manifests itself at unneccessary times, like when you’re brushing your teeth or walking the dog.

I can’t say that the same thing will happen with you as with my mom, but I do know this: you (and I and everyone else) are in a constant state of metamorphosis, and metamorphosis IS pain. Once you become more than who you are now (and the change in you slows), you’ll realize that all or some of your fears haven’t come with you as you changed and they’ll be far behind. They’ll seem very small, because they are.

I know you enough to know that you are better than your problems and also that a whole whack of people really care about you, myself included (even if you don’t like to accept help or advice).

If its you that wrote the posting, you know how to reach me. Can’t say I can make you feel better but I can be your friend.

  11. Gee, way to go, LS. You should start your own advice column.

Fuck what LS says, OP. Often those deep in psychosis are given medication to clear their heads so they can be lucid for therapy. I DOUBT you’re that far gone (I doubt you’re far gone at all!) so don’t listen to that rubbish.

  12. OP – I’m obviously not a doctor, but chances are that you have General Anxiety Disorder – a condition with which I was diagnosed myself. You don’t need to see a psychologist, but you need help. If you’re missing work and getting sick, this has become a problem. The first step to take is to go see your doctor. Your doctor will listen, completely non-judgementally and will know what to do for your specific situation. My doc told me that more important than naming my problem was to start getting better, and with a few different treatments and a lot of work on my part, I _am getting better. The road to recovery is long, but it is taken in bite-sized steps that you can handle. Remember, your quality of life is worth the effort being put in by you, with a little help along the way. I strongly encourage you to take that first step.
If you (or anyone else reading this) want to talk about this further, please contact me at madscience at mac dot com. Again, I’m not qualified to say anything – just a friendly ear who wants to see people move on from their anxiety. Good luck, OP!

  13. Anxiety….it’s what you get after eating a BigMac. Oh wait, that’s not right….it’s the shits!

  14. TTFN…I have to question your answer on this one. I suffer from depression and anxiety (pretty bad – it runs in my family)…and I love my fatties, but I don’t feel it helps me manage any better. I’m part of the 420 club only, but if I attempt to smoke during the day I’m a mess and can’t function, and my anxiety doubles.
The only time I can control my moods is talking to someone on a regular basis about it (professional, or at least someone who will take you seriously and give you good advice, or at least just listen without judging your craziness).
Good luck OP, Hopefully this sunshine helps a little!

  15. it helps to talk to someone with the same problems…but i don’t have much luck with that so i come here

  16. Real Chick… even when you’re toking in broad daylight… realize the whole world isn’t out to get you. There aren’t cops waiting until you get extra high before busting in your door and carting you off to jail.

have a puff, eat some twix, watch Grandma’s Boy and enjoy some sweet, sweet relaxation.

  17. This sucks..a good friend suffers from this and watching it grip her is painful. Not much an outsider can do though, at some point people seem to care less about everything,as someone mentioned…take a deep breath and go for a nice walk or someting to involve your brain.. Too much thinking is bad.

  18. Everyone has to find their own ‘happy’ zone – not an easy task and sometimes it’s helpful to seek an objective opinion (i.e. therapist) – I did that in my early 30s and it did help tremendously – the pot is simply a lovely reinforcement. But that is moi.

  19. sure…. s/twix/mars bar/ s/Grandma’s Boy/Step Brothers/ valid.

you just like seeing sack rubbed on drums, admin it.

  20. LMAO… I can’t help it, that movie gets me everytime! It’s the tux’s, the bunk beds, the Boats n hoes, everything.

  21. I get that.
I’m the same way with Dumb and Dumber.
you know what’s coming but can’t help but laugh when it does…

  22. Thing about psychological disorders is that sometimes the imbalance in your brain just can’t fix itself with therapy — sometimes one NEEDS medication. Sure GAD can be caused by some environmental factors, but sometimes it’s not and then it becomes a medical disorder like diabetes. What pisses me off is how people hate on medication and those who take it. They wouldn’t hate on me for taking insulin to treat my diabetes, yet I’m “weak” and “sweeping issues under the rug” for taking drugs. FFS I *have* no issues. I’ve been to therapy. I have no reason in the world to have panic attacks, yet I do without medication. When I wasn’t on ADs I’d have to take benzos at least 3-4 times a week for anxiety attacks (only the bad ones — I’d have at least 2-5 attacks a DAY for no reason whatsoever), but now that I’m on ADs I haven’t had to take one tranq in over 8 months.

I’m not saying meds is for everyone — I’m just saying there’s nothing wrong with taking them if you need them, especially if therapy does nothing for you (and yeah, I was intense therapy for a LONG time — psychiatrist and psychologist therapy sessions). Now that I’m back on meds (for about 14 months, thus far) I have no need to see either anymore, especially since I’ve found what meds work for me (it can be quite a process — it took about 6 months to figure out that SSRIs aren’t for me — I need a mix of SDRIs and SNRIs — it can be frustrating when you’re trying to find the medication that works for you, but it’s worth it in the end if you do find one that works for you).

  23. well said pk and i know your sweet avatar has been around awhile…there is a love about this thread

  24. The longer I live…the more helpful I believe suicide booths would be.
quick & painless, no muss very little fuss, You check in, an ME checks you out.
The Gene pool improves, Health Care system sees financial benefits…just seems to be a win win situation any way you look at it.

(ahhhhhhhhhhhhh,,,,I can feel the outrage & feel the heated rsponses already ~:)

  25. If you go to a doctor you can get a note so you can see a therapist without having to pay for it. If cost is the issue.

Also, I guess as my moniker is “The Bad Guy” I am also suppose to say something mean and unhelpful. You have an ugly couch!
