With very few choices in Indian restaurants in Halifax, the third one in the past 8 months is closing. Last July one on Parkland went out of business. Two months ago, another closed barely lasting a year. And now the other G.I. is closing in two weeks. Either people are not supporting these business and then bitching there are very few Indian restaurants in HRM. —Miss M

  1. There were two GI’s? Thats two too many, anyway.

Ah sorry, thats just mean. Seriously though, too much $$$ for what it is/was. We do need more Indian, agreed.

  2. Pretty much any brick and business that opens in Halifax fails, it’s not just indian food. We probably don’t need/can’t support more than a couple. I know there’s curry village, taj mahal and at least one other.

Indian food might also not be as trendy right now as it has been in the past, all I hear about right now is Thai.

  3. I just go to the stalls at the famer’s markets if I want Indian. Definitely authentic and I don’t have to pay three times the price.

  4. There was an indian restaurant in Cole Harbour that had a buffet – but there was never a single car in da parkin lot. So can’t imagine that buffet was that fresh or stocked often. Curry is kinda gag-me. You either love it or you hate it. Indian food turns into battery acid in my guts. I’ll stick with my minis.

  5. I believe they’re all closing down to make room for the new Sushi restaurants that The Captain requested

  6. the Indian place in Bayers lake is expanding for the 2nd time. places just need to not suck like GI. the place in fairview was kind of a mom n pop place which was ok, just kinda in lousy area.. but there’s now a Pakistani place going in the same place.

  7. Well two clues would tell you Indian Food isn’t very popular maybe THATS why they don’t last. Then to put on an Indian Buffet Every day? Are you serious? No one was in the parking lot and I don’t intend to be the first one eating a buffet that was probably 5 or 6 days old. Nope I’ll stick to my own good cookin!

  8. Man, I thought I was the only person hating on GI (based on the gushfest over it that I saw over the years since it opened)

I take offense to the suggestion that it and other places are failing because they are Indian food. What is one to take from this claim, I wonder?

  9. “the place in fairview was kind of a mom n pop place which was ok, just kinda in lousy area”

    truer words were never spoken.

  10. GI was disgusting.
Taste of India in scotia square is amazing (how do you know its good food? Indian folk line up daily and sing its praises!)
Dhaba Express is awesome in Bayers Lake.

  11. We order from the one on Dresden Row. They say “It will be between 45 minutes and an hour”, then 10 minutes later the doorbell rings.
Best butter chicken since I lived in Toronto. The pappadums and naan are great too!

  12. I’ve never eaten Indian food in any restaurant before…
or ever that I can even recall.
I’ve never even tried the place in SS.
I find it weird that I’m just discovering this.
Does anyone have any recommendations of what to try for a first-timer?
I know nothing of it other than everyone makes their own curries….

  13. Butter chicken would be a good place to start Zed… Flavourful but not overly spicy. If it’s hot you’re looking for, try the chicken vindaloo

  14. I highly recommend a masala dosa at Taste of India in Scotia Square. You can order the dosa outside of lunch time because they can’t manage dosas at lunch time. I’m Indian and when i was a student at nscad i ate there 4 times a week 🙂

  15. I LOVE Indian food, and I used to live above GI. How many times did I go there? Only twice. Both times it just wasn’t good food. It was just…blah, and for the price, it wasn’t worth it.
