In lieu of a rate increase the company I work for opted, this year, to give me a bonus. I thought that was great. I’ve been there ten years and am at the top of my pay-scale. I work hard and go above and beyond my job description on a daily basis. Today I got said bonus. It was attached to the rest of my paycheque. The government got about 500 extra dollars, while my pay was only an extra 250 or so. That is my bonus for the entire year. 250 bucks. So congratulations on all the hard work, government. You earned it! Can’t wait to pay you some more next march! And to the company I work for, let’s call them Lots of Drugs, maybe you should consider cutting a cheque to employees when giving them a “bonus” so they actually see some of that money you so generously dispense when we receive a positive performance evaluation. Or really why bother at all? —So glad I am finally going back to school

After 40 plus years, I saw my overtime money evaporate the same way. Suck it up, sweetcakes, the government always wins.
Who is the mod. ?
you got $250 and the gov got $500? I call bullshit. Even a million dollar per year job only pays about 50% on their last $750 dollars earned.
Hmmm Why doesn’t anyone want to answer me? I was told the mod. is one of two older female posters.
Will the real mod. of this board please stand up?
OP, the problem lies in your payroll clerk trying to anticipate how much money to take from your paycheque, if she only takes the bare minimum, then when you cross over into a new tax bracket, you will have to pay at the end of the year.
The best alternative is to overpay now, and get the overpay back at the end of the year.
btw, sometimes you will hear about someone complaining that they didn’t get any money back at the end of the year. In this case, look elsewhere for a screw up. For example, a taxable benefit like a pair of glasses can make it seem like your OT money never came back to you.
Montrealman is the current mod this week, we’ve all been taking turns. Tim Bousquet gave most of us the admin rights to moderate it properly. Thats why the threads have been getting locked.
I was the mod for a while but no one was sending me the required tribute of 10 mars bars a day, so I stomped out in a snit. ( go see NFB the big snit but I wasn’t shaking my eyes at anyone)
op, if your company cut you a cheque for the whole amount you would spend it all and then when tax time comes around you would have to cough up all that money. tax must always be paid. you know, death and taxes.
you will get some back at tax time because….. when you add 750 to one paycheque it pumps up your ‘on paper’ salary to normal plus 750, as if it was always that week after week. that’s why the big deduction. at the end of the year, it will be adjusted.
I agree with GV. There is no way taxes, CPP, EI ate up 2/3s of your cheque.
Nukka Your full of shit,Tim Bousquet doesn’t work for the Coast anymore….My life is nothing but a farce to you people.
I was told the mod was either GDM or TTFN.
GDM Thank you for answering…My sense of humour was slowly stolen from me.
it does, because that one pay period is huge and the payroll programs calculate the tax owed as if that were your usual paycheque amount. (everyone with an IQ under 125 just stop reading this thread – you will never get it)
you can actually get the situation where a bonus will knock you into a new tax bracket and the bonus is wiped out completely (but you get it back when you do your yearly taxes) but it sucks anyway.
my old employer used to give out staff bonuses based on number of years worked and people were always getting taken by surprise when the tax cut was so high on that one cheque. esp since they knew they were getting a certain amount in bonus $$ and had already ‘spent it’.
‘…I just hope no one goes posting someones personal information as vengence.’ – Nukka – August 4th, 2014 at 8:51.
Really, Nukka? You wear hypocrite well.
^^ Vengence would be the key word, TT. I do it for entertainment.
GDM’s right – probably bumped OB into a higher tax bracket.
You’ll likely get it back when you file next year. Think of it as a [forced] savings plan. Heh.
What a Crock. Are you a 1991 h.s grad, initials BC , Habs fan?
Just be happy you didn’t get it on a separate bonus cheque. As a rule bonuses are paid out and taxed at the highest tax bracket, whereas you probably just got bumped up into the middle tax bracket.
Think you’ve got it bad? Here’s my story: after 4 years as a manager of an unnamed retialer, my bonus this year amounted to $750. After tax I saw around $450. This was the only “benefit” of my entire year, my pay raise was a piddly 0.5% on my 33K a year salary. Given that I worked anywhere upwards of 45 hours a week, and inflation was in the area of 2%, I actually got a pay cut in the environs of of about a dollar an hour. The reasoning was that “business was down”, which I believed, but when the balance sheets came through, upper management all recieved raises in the tune of 5%.
Needless to say, I no longer work for that unnamed retailer. If you work for the drug store that was just bought out by a certain “Super” grocer, get used to this sort of thing. My wife has been working for them for the past 7 years in various roles, and has seen a raise once because there’s an hours worked requirement for part time staff. Managers have left her off the schedule for an entire month to ensure that she doesn’t get the required hours to get the raise.
Whee! It’s great living in NS!
Yuk it up criminals
Bluebelle 73 “What a Crock. Are you a 1991 h.s grad, initials BC , Habs fan?”
What are you asking? I don’t watch hockey

Nukka don’t refer to me/about me again.
Nukka …”Well thats not very nice, Sheila.” Directed to me WHATACROCK. That person did that a number of times months ago.
***The Coast** The mod. is not doing her job.
ob probly works at minacs
That doesn’t surprise me one bit, Fever – your situation or your wife’s. I’d be pounding the pavement, too, if I were you.
Take a leap instead ,but make sure you “Look Before You Leap” Piggy.
im glad this whatacrock nutbar won’t have a drink with me!!!!!!!!! she sounds crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used to tell the guys at work to never take overtime in pay if it was more than 8 hours over a two week pay period. The taxes were brutal.
As a retiree, I now pay squat in taxes and I have more spending money now than I ever did working. No complaints from this quarter. At least not until Pharmacare kicks in!
RadHonWag “im glad this whatacrock nutbar won’t have a drink with me!!!!!!!!! she sounds crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Whatever you sack of filth.
w.a.c., just walk away, and don’t look back. it is not worth you getting bent out of shape. things are being taken care of, slowly.nough said.
just tryed to be friendly you left-wing nutjob
Woah. A whole sack? Of filth? Shit just got real up in here. WAC, you are pressing the red button again.
Nukka, I don’t know what you did but I like your style.
Hoist and RadHongWag
I never said anything to either of you on this board that would explain the hatred, vengeance you both are showing towards
I would recommend you both seek good professional help but I wouldn’t know where you would find that help you both need around here.
I wish you both luck.
Life Sucks: All things considered,I’m holding my own.
Consider some of it “in the bank”, since you’ll probably see it as part of your refund next tax season…
Drink drink post. Drink cry post. Cry drink drink. Post post cry.
“Things are being taken care of, slowly*
Lol, as fast as your army of 286s can provess the “evidence”? Maybe you can let your fellow, Toronto police officers review this file. Afterall, once this story hits the news, every career cop in the country is gonna want a piece of this and, you’re going to be more famous than Rob Ford. The sky will be the limit, LS.
Jackass!!!!
I know which ones of you are responsible for bullying me off this board.I haven’t yet called the police.Your actions are criminal.
Whether they cut you a cheque, dole it out penny by penny or give you $500 dollars worth of near-best before date tylonol, you still gotta let the tax man rape you. I hear if you’re nice he’ll spit on it first.
PS My $1400 per annum increase this year worked out to 34 dollars by-weekly for a whopping $800 a year or so take home. Considering that: My house some how almost doubled in appraised value this year, despite not having anything done to it and that for some reason it now costs 300 more a year to pump my shit from my toilet to the ocean (same shit, different year, no new infrastructure) that 800 taken home is a fucking joke. Biggest mistake of my life was moving to this rape hole.
Oh yea – as if I could sell my house for twice what it was worth last year…
You know, sometimes it’s just not worth it to make the extra coin – especially if you’re right below a new tax bracket. You could probably end up taking home less if you just slightly get past that bracket threshold. Like, if you were $1000 under it… now you’re paying MORE taxes and $1000 spread over a year of pay doesn’t really make much of a difference. So now you’re probably taking home less. I’d probably just tell them to keep their raise. LOL.
And I really think it’s time to stop taxing benefits. Cash should be the only income the government taxed.
I wonder what the “police” will think of the aggressive comments YOU’VE made on this board to other posters, WAC? Same goes for you, LS.
Hypocrites.
i hear the night rangers are on the case. sister christian was taken to the e.r. last night after being beaten with a sack of doorknobs.

I’m pretty sure we could all complain until we’re blue in the face about the raise situation lately.
I am putting a stop to this horse shit right now:
I’ve saved every comment that Sucks and Crock ever posted this afternoon – in Sucks case, over 7,000 comments since 2009 while Crock trails behind with some 800 comments. If either Sucks or Crock persist with their threats et al to anyone on this board, I will be bringing back some of their own words to chomp them on the arse. This war is over.
pk is right. sometimes a raise nets you less pay if you jump into a new bracket. ask your employer to drop it a small amount to keep you in the current bracket until/unless they give you a whopper of a raise so you get to see some of it.
“I’ve saved every comment that Sucks and Crock ever posted this afternoon – in Sucks case, over 7,000 comments since 2009 while Crock trails behind with some 800 comments.”
I like hobbies too.
Raises don’t go very far these days, not with rising prices of living staples. I never worked anywhere where bonuses were offered and was at the top of my pay scale for 15 years. It was like financially jogging on the spot. Thank fuck (kissing floor) for that pension plan I paid 25 years into. You don’t think about that when you’re young but it sure as hell matters when you get old.
Sorry, Whatacrock. Thought you might be someone I knew.
BlueBelle No need to apologize you didn’t say anything wrong.
I am absolutely disgusted with some of you people. PK, SHITD, Nukka and TT, you should be ashamed of yourselves for acting like mean girls to poor WAC and LIFE SUCKS. It’s obvious that these two individuals have had brain injuries and don’t possess the cognitive ability to defend themselves. For shame you big bullies.
you people like keeping your shit going, don’t you. why not just fuck off, and comment on the bitch for a change. i haven’t said fuck all to any of you. and t.t., save all you want. time is a’coming.
“Time’s been a’coming” for over a year now. According to ole cat piss McGee, anyway.
GDM: you need to be sure they’re taking ENOUGH off you for taxes, too. I was in a situation last year where enough wasn’t taken off and I had to pay into the pot… after I claimed my bus passes, it was only $12, but it would’ve been a lot more if I didn’t have those.
lol, that should be written on the welcome to nova scotia sign at the border.
both the tall one and I got nailed with taxes OWING the first tax year we were here. so I get extra taken off now all the time. don’t like those nasty surprises.
(still worth it (for us) to live here though. )
Hammer, so good to see both you and Fever back on the board! Two of my favourite monikers!
By the way, Jimmy, killer line.
The worse is when you work in another province for 10 or 11 months of the year at a less rape-y tax bracket (Ontario, AB etc.) then come and work here for a month and file your taxes here as you are supposed to do. You get taxed on those 11 months of income at the local rape and pillage rate and get a big fucking tax bill in the mail. Funny, no one here seems to care. They just like being poor, drunk and fat all the time.
