Ok, let me start this by saying I do not agree with Ann Coulter. In fact, I find what she says to be funny in that crazy fundamentalist kind of way.
However, what I do have a problem with is how she is being attacked while here in Canada. Why the fuck are we trying to shut her up? Is Canada not the land of free speech?
Even worse, this is happening at a university. This is supposed to be a place of free thinking and for an open exchange of ideas. Not the “you either agree with me or you are wrong” mentality.
In my opinion, one of the core fundamentals of free speech is being able to present your position without it being shouted down while being delivered. I was not at her first speech but, what I saw and heard made me feel no pride in being Canadian. The students were shouting her down.
This way this was handled played right into Coulter’s agenda. This has given her way more publiciity than she would have received and deserved. As Andrew Coyne from Maclean’s Magazine put it as he spoke on CBC’s The National last night, it “makes Canada look like a bunch of Hicks”.
Free speech has a limit in Canada and it’s called hate speech. Anyone who is bashing/belittling any race/religion/age/sex/etc is not welcome here.
The best way to deal with the Ann Coulters of the world is to stop attending her lectures. Besides, it’s all a schtick – she gets paid to outrage and the dumb clucks just gobble it up.

I’ve hated Ann Coulter for quite some time. Although I have to agree that ignoring her is likely the only way to shut her up, I can see how she really gets people going. She just knows which strings to pull to piss people off. However, I guess she does have the right to speak, I’m just glad people don’t let her walk all over them with her strong opinions.
The laws against hate speech are enforced by police agencies, public prosecutors and the courts.
If the UofO was concerned speech laws might be violated they should have asked the appropriate law enforcement officers to attend or video taped the event.
University VP’s and student unions don’t get to decide which ideas Canadians can and cannot hear.
i guess it would be called freedom of speech, until it turns over into an actual hate crime thing. we are all entitled to an opinion on whatever we wish to voice it, would you deny this to anyone? even the the most heinous person in the world, deserves this same opinion time, as do anyone in a free country, as we are sposed to be in, right. take that away, then you are worse than the worst country in the world.
I hate Ann Coulter to the very core of my being. But, she does have the right to freedom of speech. Even though I totally 100% disagree with what she says, she none the less has the right to say it. As others have said, the best cure for her drivel is to ignore it.

Ann Coulter’s speeches ARE hate speeches though. They are racist and sexist, so she does not deserve to be protected under the law. I remember some guy was prevented from speaking in Halifax because his speech was deemed a hate speech? How is this any different?

I don’t know what’s scarier…Ann Coulter or the fact that people actually listen to her crap. Her audiences need to give their head a shake. She trashes Canadians yet expects to be welcomed on Cnadian speaking tours? Her views are red-neck bigoted opinions and she’s got that gung-ho-militaristic-Americans-are-the-supreme-race-of-the-planet attitude that is pitiable. What she fails to recall is that little skirmish back in 1812. What she fails to understand is that opinions are like the end of the alimentary canal. We’ve all got them. Hers aren’t anymore important than anyone else’s. She needs to take her hate-filled crap back to the US where she belongs and stop trying to convince Canadians that we should share her warped American values. We have laws against hate propagation. We are Canadian and can think for ourselves. Besides, where would the States be without Canadians? Half their entertainment stars and writers are Canadians. We play better hockey too. Enough said.

David Ahekenew (spelling) was charged for hate crimes and beat the charges – but was stripped of his Order of Canada. All he said was Jews were responsible for WWI and WWII.
