I love animals, don’t get me wrong. I’d never hurt a hair on a puppy or a kitten. But I get pissed off when I hear people going on and on and on about the poor stray cats and abandoned puppies, when those same people don’t give two shits about homeless people, poor kids with no Christmas toys, or any other human less fortunate than themselves. It pisses me off that they have such a big heart for Rover and Fluffy, but couldn’t care less about their fellow human beings who may be suffering right in front of them. I wonder what’s wrong with them and what’s wrong with their cold shrunken hearts. —Petless Poverty Fighter

  1. Just because people care about animals doesn’t mean they don’t care about other things.

These two things are totally separate issues.

I donate toys and christmas gifts to seniors every year. I donate to the food bank and the like, but that doesn’t mean I can’t support organizations like PACS who help stray cats.

It pisses ME off when self righteous fucks like you marginalize one issue in favour for another because someone may have it worse or because you don’t feel it’s as important than another issue. Issues of suffering can have many different entities, and just because someone is vocal about one entity, doesn’t mean they can’t care about another.

But no, fuck suffering animals because there are starving children out there and OMG a person’s efforts to help those suffering can only help absolutely one of these groups and no more. *huge eyeroll*

Like I told that lisababe c-unt in that other bitch: get fucked, OB.

(besides, what makes humans any more important than any other animal on this planet?)

  2. Everybody has different causes that they choose to support – or not. And some of us are actually capable of supporting both. Fuck you and fuck your assumptions.

  3. We all draw our moral lines in the sand in different places. When Ernest Shackleton’s Chief Engineer was ordered to kill their sled dogs, and the litter of puppies that they had recently whelped, he did it reluctantly, saying “There’s many a man alive of less worth than a dead dog”.
Animals feel fear and pain, just as we do; but there is no significant evidence to suggest that they enjoy inflicting it. Maybe that’s the difference for some of us. Help who you can, OP, and we will do the same.

  4. I agree with PK’s statement – what makes humans any more important than any other animal on this planet? If anything, it is our responsibility to take care of the animals that we’ve fucked over (so all of them, be they abandoned puppies or the dwindling caribou populations). It drives me crazy that we (as first world humans) are so damn entitled to everything under the sun, even if it means taking away another species, another habitat, polluting another lake or river, or destroying another old growth forest.

I think you need to take your bitch up with the immensely rich who do nothing (or the bare minimum that doesn’t dent their wallets) to help out their fellow humans. Why are they so much “better” than the homeless, kids without Christmas toys, or the other unfortunate people you mentioned?

  5. For what it’s worth, the way I’m reading this, OP isn’t implying that you can’t care about animals and humans, (s)he just doesn’t understand why someone with so much passion for animals might not have any passion for fellow humans.

  6. I like animals more than people.

    Yeah i said it.

Animals aren’t capable of going out and getting jobs or turning thier lives around like homeless people are. They aren’t in control of thier own desities and they aren’t able to defend themselves against violence. Also, the human race is polluted with self entitled morons and asshats who have no respect for themselves, let alone other people around them. Check your head, OP. You may be suffering from a shrunken heart yourself.

  7. one more post:

The main difference is that when something bad happens to a person, there is a distinct probability that they did something to deserve it, whereas animals not so much. That’s why people might be all up in arms about say, a cat getting beaten to death but when a person turns up dead, they might think “they had it coming, nobody just kills someone for no reason”

  8. just my opinion but…
animals have far less options to help themselves in the modern world than humans do.
many of those peeps are homeless by choice.
they COULD pick themselves up and figure shit out…
but that takes effort and they’d rather just drink mouthwash for 6 hours and pass out again.

when cats/dogs go to some shelters… they’re euthanized after a certain period of time.
do we do that to homeless trying to get back on their feet for years on end?
    no?
so I sympathize with the animals…

  9. This post made me furious….I get pretty fucking sick of giving my hard earned money to the “homeless” guy that uses it for smokes, booze…and then tells me he is starving…the apple I offered was not enough, or the women who stands and begs for money using her cute kid as bait. Animals don’t take others for granted, especially around the holidays. Have you ever seen a fucking dog holding a sign on Windsor Street that he needs milkbones..I didn’t think so……

  10. people are animals though, so what can’t an animal be a person? They are conscious beings just like use. they just can’t seem to graspe our language.

  11. people are animals though, so what can’t an animal be a person? They are conscious beings just like use. they just can’t seem to graspe our language.

  12. humans are the reason there is even an issue about poor abandoned animals to begin with! we domesticated them, and then kick them to the curb when they’ve lost the ability to properly fend for themselves. humans are the only species capable of contrived negative intent.. animals can’t do that. humans are scum and animals are just doing their animal thing.

  13. I do happen to care more about dogs than most people in Halifax. So get fucked OP. You care about your precious hobos you probably haven’t done anything to help, and I’ll keep caring about dogs who will gratefully eat food when I give it to them and not complain I didn’t give them money for faxe/crack/dilaudid.

  14. As a point of interest, according to Wikipedia … “A recent international survey suggests that compassion toward animals is correlated with compassion toward human beings. Earlier studies also established the links between interpersonal violence and animal cruelty.”

My thoughts … compassion and altruism are more easily extended to creatures (human or otherwise) that have no/little control over their current predicament and weren’t responsible for creating it; and where the risk is low that our acts will be unappreciated or wasted. Unfortunately, many have lost faith that those who are currently in the position of needing help (in whatever form) will actually turn that around and make positive change in their life … the ‘helpee’ doesn’t take advantage of the generosity of the ‘helper’ … and for many, the expectation exists that what they do will reflect positively on them.

True selflessness and pure altruism … hmmm, interesting concept.

  15. I don’t think that Love and Compassion in either situation should be disregarded. I know lots of people who care about both including myself 🙂

  16. That’s exactly right OP, animals aren’t people and thank FUCK for that. An animal can die just because they can’t open a god damn door, I see homeless people doing it all the time. People are parasites. Cats and dogs don’t rape and kill people and store the bodies in their crawlspace, they don’t pawn their mother’s wedding ring that her dead husband gave her so they can buy drugs/alcohol, they don’t stab people to death for the $4 in their pockets, they don’t ignore and step over a man who had a heart attack so they can get a TV or video game at a discount, they don’t hijack planes or shoot up schools, etc etc. Humans landed on the moon! They found cures to killer contagious diseases. They actually invented a procedure to remove fat from your body so you don’t have to exercise. I think humans are doing quite alright and won’t see any help from me. Just go on People of Walmart for 5 minutes. If you still feel compassion for people, good for you. Now go on icanhascheezburger.com. Yeah.

Excuse me while I go cuddle with my kitteh who made a bed in a box of decorations. I guess that’s one thing they can do for themselves.

  17. You’re right animals aren’t people, they’re better than people and I do have more sympathy/empathy for them.

  18. I would say that Mel needs a hug, but any hug I (or any human) could offer would be vastly inferior to kitty cuddles.

  19. 1. What they all said. People can care about both.
    2. Animals don’t have as many people pulling for them. So those of us who do are needed greatly.
    3. Animals don’t OFTEN cause their own fucking problems
    4. Suck my proverbial cock.

  20. you’re the one with a cold, shrunken heart. You care more about arrogant human beings than creatures enslaved by arrogant human beings that can’t speak for themselves.

There is no right answer here you see. Only a stupid person would think otherwise.

  21. Those homeless and helpless bums can take care of themselves. They all had the same opportunities to reach for success….obviously they passed it up to drink a bottle of mouthwash.

  22. it’s like seinfeld mused….

Animal control came to my apartment and, based on legal guidelines, determined my place was too small. It was unfit to have a dog reside there… so they came in and took the dog….
    but they left ME there.

  23. What Persevere said.
There is no mutual exclusivity between love for other species and our fellow man, they’re just different. Love for your pet tends to be more parental love (in a manner of speaking) while helping somebody out is being a good citizen, something one can take pride in.

  24. stop generalizing. I’d be happy to drop off a can of cat food to some poor child, so they can have a meal for XMAS. My cat wouldn’t mind at all
