Like you I watched this weekend as downtown Toronto was reduced to the level of a Mogadishu with pretentious brew-pubs. Like you I came close to bursting blood vessels in my skull that I didn’t even know I had. Like you I had to resist the urge to embrace globalization by putting my fist through my flat screen and then rushing out to the nearest big box chain and buying another. Like you I laughed my ass off at the sight of police officers laying the lumber on choking, teary-eyed hippies. Like you I played the G-20 drinking game, taking a big snort of Coors Lite every time somebody made a Guantanamo Bay reference.
But, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE stop making the suggestion that these professionally irate malcontents and scruffy vandals should be “Put into uniform and sent to Afghanistan”
Whether you agree with the mission or not, this country has a far better military than it has any right to expect; and the ego-driven shit-stains that I saw being carted away wouldn’t even make a decent skid mark on a pair of army issue boxer shorts.
Our men and women in uniform deserve a whole lot better than to be mentioned in the same breath as those wankers. Don’t get me wrong, when it comes to those who believe that anarchism means smashing the windows of coffee shops, rote memorizing Chomsky, eating cold K-D out of an “X-Men 2” promotional frisbee or banging their punk-tang of the week on top of a 5 day old pizza box while their comrades do bong hits in the living room; by all means, send them to the tribal areas of Pakistan, or West Africa or Somalia.
Let them have all the anarchy they can handle – jammed up their sophomoric asses an inch at a time.

I often wonder what these lackeys would do if our country ever devolved to a point where it was anarchistic, lacking clean drinking water, lacking access to medical care, access to rights, and so forth.
I would think they would give up hope after they realized that their $2600 Macbook Pro that was manufactured in what equate to forced labour camps in China, couldn’t hook up to a local Wi-Fi hotspot because the local internet infrastructure had been torn down. Oh noes! I can’t log onto my local revolutionary blog to complain how this great system we have allows me to have an education or have free health care!
I understand the desire to cut globalization off. Problem is, it’s far too late to stop it. You’re about 20 years too late. The process has created symbiotic relationships between North America and most of Asia, and if you cut off the symbiosis, you often kill the parent being. Remember, globalization is allowing countries like China and India have a larger middle class, and is slowly forcing political change in China.

I always thought that a couple years military service does almost everyone some good. They don’t have to be sent away to Afghanistan but I do understand why a lot of countries have mandatory military service for their young people.

No Sarey – on Sunday night I saw at least 3 cranky old bastards much like myself being interviewed on the street by various media outlets making that suggestion. It was also bandied about frequently on comment boards after the Fredericton cenotaph was vandalized last November. And after the arson of the Oromocto Legion.
Short version – I believe in and have the highest regard for our professional, all-volunteer military. It should not be used as a punishment option or rehab facility for asocial elements – even in jest.
Valid bitch. These protesting granolas wouldn’t survive a day in a third world or developing nation. But I wouldn’t mind seeing them sent to Afghanistan to walk in front of our force’s vehicles to locate IEDs.

I don’t support the violence. For the record, I don’t support the aims of the WTO, IMF, World Bank or most of what transpires at various “G” conferences.
I would think it must be embarrassing for the ruling Conservative Party to have to spend $1.3 billion on security for a gathering like this, when it could have been done (and without exception HAS been done elsewhere) for a fraction of that cost. It doesn’t look very “fiscally conservative” to me. A few dozen Black Bloc rioters doesn’t justify this enormous expense, regardless of what a few crackpots may think.
I think the vast majority of citizens who peacefully assembled to voice their opinion on the ideology of globalism in Toronto had every right to do so, or else the rights of free speech and free assembly mean absolutely nothing.
As far as the substance of the conference is concerned, aside from the maternal health initiative (flawed in my opinion by the intrusion of domestic politics on the abortion issue) the only real public pronouncement to come out of the conference was a promise to cut deficits in half by 2013. Mere window dressing. The participants won’t do it and they know they can’t. The world teeters on the edge of recession.
Frankly, I’m surprised more Canadian tax payers aren’t upset at the unprecedented $1.3 billion bill they will be paying so that Canada could act as host to a few dozen world leaders for a few days.
I’m still trying to figure out why Harper decided to make such an enormous and expensive production of this conference by locating it in the heart of downtown Toronto, which necessitated the building and manning of “Fortress Toronto”. No doubt the heavy police presence also provoked some of the reaction that everyone is talking about. I’m sure your average security consultant would have advised a very different plan. It’s very puzzling. Was it hubris on Harper’s part, or poor planning or was it just stupidity?
As a guess, I’d say most folks complaining about peaceful protesters (and the peaceful ones were the vast majority) have no clue what was discussed at the G20, or what will be discussed at the upcoming G8, or what has been discussed and decided by participants at any of the major economic conferences in the last 20 years.
Your last paragraph can just as easily apply to most of the protestors, the Hippies and the Ostrogoths both.

Perhaps. People sometimes have more energy than wisdom. But there are real issues at stake for citizens here at home and halfway around the world and I would hope that most of the “Hippies” know what those issues are. Yes, there are always those who go along for “the party, the pot and the poon”, but I think they are in the minority. But what do I know?
As for the “Ostrogoths” they frequently give anarchy (as a system of social organization) a bad name. But their tactic is well-known. Violence provokes a response. They feel if they manage to provoke a severe enough response, then more moderate members of society will be motivated to join them, or at least question their own comfortable assumptions. It sometimes works very well as a method of gaining adherents to the cause, whatever it may be. It also works for the state security apparatus, who place agitators in amongst non-violent protesters, hoping to spark violence. This in turn will be used to justify a heavy handed police response and at the same time marginalize the legitimate concerns of the protest movement, whatever they may be.
I’m sure you know all this. It’s just “Civil Disobedience 101”.
Strictly speaking, I’m sympathetic to the point of the original bitch. I don’t think we need to put anyone into the Canadian military as a punishment or method to “straighten them out”. Our military needs to be a disciplined and efficient force applier (“killing machine” if you will) not a violent, undisciplined rabble, like say, a lot of units in the American military. We’ve seen the end result of recruiting a lot of psychotics and hillbillies into the service and setting them free in a war zone.

1) I do not support violence of any kind.
2)The people smashing cars, throwing bottles, and causing general mayhem were not PROTESTORS, they were VANDALS. Continuing to label them as such only undermines the message that thousands of peaceful, rational, and informed citizens were trying to send by exercising their right to protest.
I’ve been told by foreigners visiting Canada that they can’t believe how passive we are as a country – we let alot of things slide and rarely seem to organize on a mass scale. While I am disappointed at the behaviour of some sadisitic opportunists up in Toronto, I am also relieved that so many people cared enough to turn up.
… And please don’t jump to assumptions that people were protesting “globalization”, there were a large number of specific items on the agenda that anyone could have had a problem with (not to mention the cost).

The state has to (and needs to) protect those important folks that would attend these meetings. Should that cost 1.3 billion dollars? Maybe. I’m more concerned about the fake lake they built to bring “Muskoka” to the city. That’s a bigger waste of money to me. Although I do believe that a majority of the economic issues brought forth are indeed pointless, we as a society, need these political circle-jerks. Predominately because they are usually the only time where we see people actually massing in actual political justice. Also, the UN at this point is a tool of the Security Council (and it could be argued it always was) so, these G conferences are usually the only time where we see world leaders get together, whether the meeting minutes say “Golfed” or “discussed third world debt”. We need to address the concern that the Black Bloc members ruined the message, whether that was the point or not. The peaceful protesters got run over by these anarchists, which means that the peaceful ones had their rights trampled on by malcontents, not by the state specifically. Also, if we are to not label them as protesters, as hellakitty has suggested, that is the primary issue at hand. Black Bloc members came to the protests, as protesters, then incited riots. Unfortunately, that means they labeled themselves as protesters to gain notoriety, and the media (who perpetrates the label) ran with it. There’s a critical disconnect especially where the media is concerned in relation to the general populace, so this becomes the label. This is especially true when they’re mixed in with normal protesters. At any rate, talking about these anarchists and giving them attention is like giving a dog attention. The minute we give them attention, be it positive or negative, their behavior is justified to them, because they obtained their goal. One look at the CBC comment boards shows us how much they are in the national consciousness now. It’s not at FLQ levels, but it’s getting close.
