I do not know if this is somewhat of a bothersome issue with others, or some sort of local pride, however it just bugs the fuck out of me. I am not Nova Scotian, my husband is, and we moved here some six months ago. I work in retail and have to listen to fucking “Somewheres”, “I seen”, “Or’dere”, and other hickish types of slurs ALL DAMN DAY. It’s called ANNUNCIATING. You can pronounce it if you try, I promise. I’m sick of hearing how I don’t say “Newfoundland” or even “car” the right way. Fuck. I love this place, but I hate how you all speak!

taboo territory here. accents, pronunciation, etc are territorials. even canucks do not sound alike from west to east. we’re like a melting pot. i have been told i sound like some guy from manhattan, other times a “limey”, then an “aussie”, even “deutchland”. and yet other ppl of their own culture ask me if i am one of them. so go figure how a guy “from manhattan” sounds like a “limey”, or a “german”,etc. ppl who try to belittle others of the way they speak have probably been exposed to other ppl making remarks about their own speech pattern. no expert on this. just guessing, like everything else here.
Actually, it’s ENUNCIATE, but what’s little spelling error between friends?? I’m just saying…
The one that drives me nuts is ‘acrost’ instead of ‘across’. Or people who call everyone ‘buddy’.
I am from Nova Scotia but now live in Ontario and I can confirm that people do pronounce Newfoundland wrong. I can speak proper english but find our East Coast accents beautiful, it is part of what makes us unique. I am proud to be a Nova Scotian and being away from home just makes me appreciate it that much more! So my suggestion to you, is to invest in a good pair of earplugs, I think “I seen” some at Walmart or “somewheres”.
Melissa, I confess I am one of them. I’ve heard New fern land, New found len, New fern len, and other variations. As a non-Maritimer, I wouldn’t know who is right either. So what’s the correct pronunciation, Melissa? The other thing. Vicky, i’m not even sure the bitcher meant “enunciation”, which means where you place the emphasis of a word. I think the bitcher really meant the wrong pronunciation of a word, like TTFN said, “acrost” for across, or even accent… as “ordere” sounds like the way a non-Anglophone would pronounce order… like beure in French for butter.
then maybe the original bitcher needs to get their thoughts in order, before posting…did you mean “enunciate” or “pronunciate”?? Little details like spelling, as well as correct vocabulary, are important, especially when you work at a message service, as I do…just wondering what you really meant to say…
ya Vicky! I guess the bitcher has in his/her own way committed a “bitchable offence” . Two, in fact, spelling and lack of clarity 😛
Hickish eh? Fuck off back to Van”cue”ver or maybe “Trunna” you git. Just be thankful you don’t live in Cape Breton or the South Shore where there is still a (thankfully) local version of the English language. When I moved “down the shore” as a high schooler (and I mean past shelburne, not just to Bridgewater) it took me a good two months to understand what some of my classmates were saying. I’m not complaining mind you, but maybe I just have an appreciation for language and the quirks of it from place to place. But I get a feeling this bitch isn’t so much about the language of our people and more about class differences, right?
has anyone told you today they love you? I do, Embryo…you rock! And Cranky, I suspect you are correct in your assertions…
thanks Vicky, you rock too 😉
@ embryoThe correct pronuciation of Newfoundland is NOOF’nland. Say it out loud a few times. You’ll see.
hey Cheers Don. NOOF’nland . wow, i don’t know if i can say that. NOOF’nland NOOF’nland NOOF’nland . no wonder nobody’s got it right heh!heh! Cheers once again, Don.
I love Embryo’s profile picture! 🙂

I am trying to figure out why a little bit of slang would upset people so much .It doesn’t make any sense who really cares!do you understand enough of what they are saying to sell them a shirt or some pants.I have been reading these bitches on my lunch hour for awhile and can’t believe some of the things people get upset about these days . I am almost afraid to post this comment incase I misspellsomething or forget a period somewhere . I think people forget that this is just a simple post not an english lit essay or something . I think some people need to lighten up or maybe all they need is a hug ….who knows .
loooooool Raoul and Vicky To bad that bitcher wouldn’t go to Newfoundland they are worse there I ought to know been there a few times lol. Girls are me ducky, boys are me cocky go where you to stay where you’re at, meet me on the bridge that poor bastard would go crazy lol
it probably is a class thing, yes, and what’s wrong with that? I can’t stand the poor grammar and pronunciation. it immediately labels you (whether you agree with it or not, or flame me about it or not), so why would you want to do that?
Poor grammar? Sure. Pronunciation? You might want to avoid traveling to any other members of the Commonwealth if it bothers you that much, let alone the Southern United States. So, is it DartMOUTH or DartMYTH? Please tell this semi-local boy how to pronounce the local towns…
