What is with Nova Scotians and drinking? It’s all about going out to pubs and having parties around here. And the next person who says to me, “Oh, you’re not drinking? Aw you’re no fun!” is getting slapped upside the head! Why do you feel the need to drink every weekend? How about spending your Saturday night going out with your friends for a coffee or a movie instead? Pick your local coffeehouse over your local pub! Does alcohol always have to be involved?
No, I don’t drink, never have and never will. I think it’s pathetic that so many people around here have to drink to have fun.
Being a non-drinker has its perks: we live longer, we’re better looking in general (b/c we’re healthier!), we’re more successful, we are naturally more fun (I mean, we don’t need alcohol to have fun), the list goes on!
I’m just sick of it. Where are all of the abstainers? —No, I DON’T Want a Beer
This article appears in Apr 12-18, 2012.

“Where are all of the abstainers?”
Does this answer your question, OP?

‘Being a non-drinker has its perks: we live longer, we’re better looking in general (b/c we’re healthier!), we’re more successful, we are naturally more fun….’ – I’d sure like to see your ironclad guarantee.
Not sure where you get your facts, OB, and also not sure if you understand the difference between social drinking and alcoholism.
First off, OB, we do NOT drink here in the Maritimes…..We perpetuate the regional stereotype, thank you very much.
Just a couple of points:
“we live longer, we’re better looking in general (b/c we’re healthier!)”
There have been many well documented and proven studies that have shown that the occasional drink of red wine or beer actually PROMOTES good health and has several health benefits. Everything in moderation.

“we’re more successful”
I’m assuming your comparing your so called success to that of the common homeless street wino with this comment. Completely arrogant and baseless, btw. Everyone’s definition of success is different, asshole. I happen to know serveral people that I consider to be quite successful and they have all imbibed on occasion. I’m getting the impression that you’re trying to compare going out partying on the weekends to someone who has a legitimate and life altering addiction. Two completely different things. You’re blurring the lines.
“we are naturally more fun”
Yeah. You sound like a real hoot.
I didn’t touch a drop until about the age of 25, myself. There is nothing wrong with abstaining. Lord knows that the world has it’s fair share of alcoholics and the list of associated problems with alcoholism is long and varied, (like any other addiction). However, your sweeping comments and generalizations, coupled with, IMO, your comparison of someone out drinking on a Saturday night to your garden variety homeless wino is way off mark. I’m not knocking your decision to not drink. Good on you. But don’t judge all of those who do. Contrary to what you think, not all of us Nova Scotians are raging alcoholics with gin blossom noses and a shine still in the woods. Suck on this information, OB: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholic_bev…
My brother never smoked or drank in all his 63 years but he was never a pain in the ass about it like you, OP. He knew that he was in the minority but it certainly didn’t stop him from having fun in a bar with his standard glass of Coke.
TheCaptain says, “Hey OB, you’re not drinking? Aw you’re no fun!”
Slap me, I dare you. I fuckin’ dare you. I’ve already got my morning whiskeys into me and I’m ready to throw down. I’ll show you the perks of drinking!
The perks of drinking is to tolerate people like you successful, good looking “Holier than thou” type.
Perhaps you need to hang out with another crowd, OB? The “holier than thou” crowd, to be exact.
Just because some of us like to drink socially, doesn’t mean we have issues. A drink here or there isn’t going to hurt anyone. if your friends are constantly getting drunk than they are likely weekend alcoholics. These people represent university students, not the norm of actual adults (because you’re describing childish behaviour, not behaviour of actual mature grown ups — hint: when one grows up, they tend not to give a rats ass if someone drinks, smokes, does drugs, etc…).
I hang out with plenty of people where a few drinks here or there are drank and if you choose not to drink it’s not a huge deal.
TBH you sound like you’re in university — both your maturity level and general topic are give aways.
I don’t understand.. you say you don’t need alcohol to have fun, yet you don’t seem to be having any fun. You want to go to a coffee shop? Then go to a fucking coffee shop. Do you have to have people with you at all times to go out anywhere? Just do whatever you want and maybe find other friends that want to spend hours in coffee shops as well.
So you have issues with people who drink. Sounds like your a university student. If the people you hang out with only drink on weekends then find new friends that do not drink.
Did you actually put any research effort into your list? A glass of alcohol a day thins the blood which is extremely good for you AND your appearance. It is recommended by various health professionals.
And actually you’re not more successful. There is a great deal of success gained hobnobbing with a drink or two after work. You’re not on a career path yet and i know because of that ridiculous statement. People who say “I don’t drink” and refuse to say why are automatically branded in the workplace as recovering alcoholics.
There is a huge range of people between boozy moron alcoholic children you are still associating with at your (very obviously) tender and naive age and a teetotaler who probably nags the shit out of them. There are those of us who CAN stop at 1, 2 or even 3. Those of us who CAN have a social drink one night and abstain the next night if we wish.
You sound like a right fucking nag. There is nothing wrong with not drinking but you’re trying to get everyone to hop on your bandwagon. I can’t judge as thoroughly as i’d like because all i know of you is this bitch. But judging from this alone, you sound like you’re no fun at all. You’d annoy the shit out of me.
And because i already have a good idea how your brain works, let me reiterate that it’s not because you abstain that makes you no damn fun. It’s because you’re a nag. Nobody likes a nag OP. Nobody ever anywhere.
or you could just be clever and… lie. tell em you’re a designated driver or something…
no-one, I repeat, NO-ONE, rags on the DD’s.
All us socially deviant, ne’re-do-well, raging, slurred speech spitting, wobbly alcoholics always appreciate someone willing to cart our ass around.
Drinking is big here… there’s tons of youngin’s, most without their parents for the first time… it’s depressing as fuck here, and booze culture is definitely alive and well.

For the three-months from Oct. 3, 2011 to Jan. 1, 2012, the NSLC recorded net income of $61.3 million on sales of $156.6 million. That is a 2.5 per cent increase in net income when compared to the third quarter last year of $59.8 million on sales of $151.4 million.
you’re really looking like the vegan who likes to go to the keg and complain about all the sick, murderous people eating steak…
What did you do, travel from some little piss-hole town with one bar to come to school here? Drinking is big everywhere in Canada sunshine, and NS isn’t even close to the top of the list.
The list does not go on. I tried to add to it objectively and failed. Where are the abstainers? At home in bed! Brush up on your sleepwalker game, op.
just accept the fact that it’s what we do and that it makes us happy.
halifax has one of the highest amount of bars per capita in north america and there’s obviously a reason for it
as an elitist, let me give you some math you may be able to understand…

OB: “I don’t need alcohol to have a good time”
X: Sure, and I don’t need a lighter to start a bonfire, either…but it IS much quicker! ;->
I was all ready with my comment…. but I think you guys covered all the arguments for me!
Lol, whatever.
donkalicious!!! how goes the battle?
The battle goes slow. I write my last exam on April 23. Le sigh, it’s a while yet.

o.p., n.s. is noted for three things, gambling, fighting and drinking.moreso down cape breton way, on all 3.
Shut the fuck up and hop in your time machine to 1920’s America.
People that need alcohol to have fun don’t understand someone who doesn’t. I often don ‘t drink when I go out and some people who don’t get that you can have fun without alcohol think it is a shame an almost waste of time. I always have fun when I go out. I am sure I have more fun than most. As well I don’t waste the next day with a hangover. If someone is of drinking age, it isn’t very mature to try and talk someone into drinking…but it does happen. I am not judging those who drink because I drink at times but leave the people alone who don’t want to drink. It isn’t something that must be done to enter a bar or to have fun.
Have a drink and lighten up.
One thing that bugs me about this bitch is that OB assumes that all of us who drink drink to get drunk. That we’re all a bunch of irresponsible drinkers.
And to that I throw out a big fat FUCK. YOU.
There’s nothing wrong, whatsoever with having a few drinks over dinner with some friends, or going out for a couple drinks with some friends/co workers.
And hay, there’s also nothing wrong with going out and drinking TO get drunk, either. The consumption of alcohol is 100% legal for those over the age of 19, and if you don’t like it ob, bite me. You know why you likely get railed on for no drinking? Because YOU likely make a big deal out of it. The fact that you let it bug you is proof enough. Most mature adults will simply say “nah, not interested” and leave it at that.
you don’t need to drink to have fun. Just have a cannon rolled
I understand where you’re going from OP. You’re probably quite young maybe 19, 20 y.o. and everybody you know drinks to access. You need to find a different group of people to hang with. Good luck with that.
