While walking home Canada Day around 3 am alone a SUV stopped right in front of me, so I crossed behind it to the other side of the road. Then the guy asks me where whatever street is, and asked if I wanted a drive home. I said no, rudely because I was freaked out, then he calls me a bitch and leaves. Not getting into strangers’ cars at 3 am doesn’t make me a bitch. So, to all the guys out there who honestly just want to help out and offer a safe drive home to a lone girl they see walking home in the middle of the night, my advice is don’t. She, quite likely, will feel safer if you leave her be. However, there is no harm in flagging down, paying for, and sending over a cab if the mood so strikes you. Keep it classy, Halifax. —Just Saying

I don’t think he really wanted to know “where whatever street is” and you were prudent to decline his offer of a ride home.
The fact that he called you a bitch for doing so only confirms that he had something on his mind that night that had nothing to do with your safety.
but then I must ask – why in the hell were you walking home alone at that time of night!!!!?????
according to halifax bylaws, you may carry a sword if you are escorting a young lady home. so i’m gonna go get my machete grrrrrrrrr
Do you know how fucking idiotic you are, as a lone female, to be wandering around town at 3 a.m.? You are a situation waiting to happen – an open invite for some loony fuck to jump you. Either get home earlier or spend money on a cab, bozo.
Really though.. No one should walk home by themselves that late, I knew a guy who was murdered walking home alone in Dartmouth.
Also, some violent shit always tends to go down on Canada day, in my experience. I wouldn’t be walking the streets alone that time of night on that particular day and I consider myself a tough guy who knows how to fight.
It isn’t a sexist thing, don’t walk home alone, especially if you are not extremely physically strong, which most women aren’t in comparison to men. Even if you are really strong, you can be outnumbered. When will people learn? Hopefully before they get victimized.
So many stupid people still do this.
Either the guy was genuinely concerned or a creep, either way, you shouldn’t be out if you are scared to be attacked.
and PG, I heard that the bylaw REQUIRES you to have a sword if you are accompanying a lady home, not just allows.
Something similar happened to me a few months ago, I was walking home on Robie near the hospital around 10 pm, and some middle eastern or Greek looking guy in an SUV pulled up and asked me how to get to Domino’s. So I told him and then he offered me a drive home. I said no thanks and he asked again saying it was no problem, to which I again said no thanks. He just drove off. It happened to me a couple of other times as well in the past decade. If they get belligerent, threatening to write down their license plate number and tell it to the cops usually gets them on their way in a jiffy (and really, it should be reported). I doubt there really are any random guys out there just offering rides to random women out of the goodness of their heart, unless they’re obviously in trouble.
fyi, i taught the boy this, don’t get close to the vehicle, better to be cautious and not a statistic
It’s sad that society is so fearful of strangers offering help. Not saying it’s not for good reason, it’s just sad.
you takle your chances roaming the streets at that hour of the day. you might have gotten away luucky this time, o.p., maybe not the next. you fuck around late at night, who knows what kind of low life is out there. get on your knees and thank the great flying speghetti monster, that you got home okay.
Just saying is just stupid. It’s like saying yes to crack.
A woman walking alone at 3am in Halifax? That’s just asking for trouble. Don’t forget that Halifax’s Sleep Watcher remains free……odd he hasn’t made an appearance lately. Maybe he found himself a willing girlfriend.
Oh man, the last thing you want to do is tell women they can’t do something, even though it makes sense.
An SUV – Escalade maybe? he might have been trying to interest you in his business venture, pimps r us.
There are a few times when I’ve ended up walking home alone at night and I find it realllly helps to act like a deranged lunatic, with murder in your eyes and bark and hiss at people as they walk by ;D.
I learned from the best <3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBVBUt4DOQQ
Also – to all the guys out there who honestly just want to help out and offer a safe drive home to a lone girl they see walking home in the middle of the night: Don’t call them a bitch and drive off in a huff if they don’t take you up on your “generous offer”… Jeez…
Yeah, but the thing is Dartmouthy it’s one thing to politely decline but when you’re rude to people, don’t be surprised if someone calls you a bitch.
Get over yourselves. People lose track of time, buses don’t run very late, and it’s hard to get a cab in Halifax on a holiday weekend. People take calculated risks. Obviously things worked out to the OB’s benefit because she lived to tell the tale. I’ve walked home late bazillions of times. Sometimes it’s the only option.
Hey Mole Rat, who the fuck cares if the guy was Greek or Middle Eastern? What relevance does that have???? He offered you a ride and left when you said no.
he must have been trying to entice the rat with spanakopita and moussaka…. duh.
I was only walking two blocks to my house, and how idiotic are you for suggesting that ‘it was an open invite for some looney fuck to jump me’. It is males like you with your attitude that make the world a shitty place.
That last comment was directed to TTFN. When you say dumb stuff like that your inadvertently trying to reinforce fear and repression of women through normalizing the crimes of bad people. And, as I see it, that is not the best stance to take on the matter. The good thing is that many people are smart enough to see past that now. Yay evolution.
I mentioned it in case the OP was reading and it was a similar looking guy (how many creepy guys can there really be driving an SUV around trying to trick women into their cars?), but I can see why you’d be pissed. I hate when people include random details about someone’s (non-white) race/ethnicity just to “spice up” a story. I should have been more clear on the reason.
By the way, no one who isn’t creepy randomly offers women rides home at night….No. One. Whether they call me a bitch or not.
He had dark hair wavy, and a dark beard that was just a little too long, but it wasn’t a full blown old maritimer man beard. he was prob between 25-34. But, I’m not sure about his ethnicity. Looked tanned though. haha Does that sound like your creeper too?
Possibly. Same age, and I know he had dark hair and facial hair but I don’t remember how long it was. It wouldn’t prove anything anyway I guess.
