Dear SMU library,

Thank goodness I don’t need to come here often. You are the loudest quiet space I’ve ever been to! I actually have a headache! I wish there was someone to enforce those “quiet please! students working” signs I see all over the place. This makes me sad 🙁—I just need to finish this paper but my internet doesn’t work at home!

  1. o.p., get one of those airlink wireless plug ins. they fit in any usb jack, and install software. then you get free net for life by using linksys, or someone close bys, wireless signal. i used them for a few years, and they are just as fast as aliant, or eastlink.they have a 54 mbps ratio, downloads are fairly fast, as is uploads. it should be good enough for your needs. and i was running 3 servers at the time. not now, had to get t-1 service here now. because of my business. libreries suck big time, anyway.

  2. This is what you get for not trying a little harder in High School, and getting accepted to a proper uni…sorry.

  3. You should’ve gone to the lab in the Sobey building — SB 155. It’s usually the quietest labs and usually never full. And, since it *is* considered a quiet zone, if people are making too much noise you can ask one of the lab assistants (they should have their location on the white board if they’re not stationed there) to ask the offenders to be quiet. There’s a lab assistant on duty from 9am to 9pm daily (12-5pm on weekends) PLUS no cell phones are allowed in here. And the chairs are super comfy 🙂

Another option, if you don’t live downtown is to visit the library at msvu if your internet doesn’t work at home and you have a laptop — they don’t make you logon to their wireless network. I’m not an MSVU fan, but I do love their library — the staff is great and they even post signs that say “if you are having a problem with too much noise, let us know” and signs in the hallways that pretty much shame those who talk on their cells too loudly. I live in CP so it’s a lot easier to go work there than come all the way downtown to work at SMU. And it’s always quiet.

The *only* way I’ve ever been able to get any work done in the library at smu is when I was listening to music at the same time.

Also: I’ve been to three universities (one is in the top three of undergrad universities in the country), and I can say for certain SMU doesn’t suck. Well, not for commerce, anyway, and administration is a hell of a lot easier to deal with than dal, msvu (ESPECIALLY MSVU) and acadia. COMBINED.

  4. Tell me about it! Third floor of the library is supposed to be silent and there are still dumbasses who go there together for social time. Such a piss off!

  5. HAH!

    Try the NSCC waterfront campus!

Fuck, why not just take this sympathy card. When you open it up it will have fuck you all written all over it.

  6. For some reason, the SMU library seems to have gotten much louder in the 2 1/2 years I was out of town. I wonder why.
