Regarding the recent school yard brawl involving 14 students, I would like to know why the local media did not emphasise the cause of this brawl that left RCMP officers injured? Cole Harbour High school”s” have a history. Are we now ignoring what the root of this problem is.
I have a friend who works at this school, who knows exactly what happened and what the demographics were of students involved.

The elephant in the classroom in this case is the color of the skin of the males involved.
Face it, in this case, as has been for a long time in those schools, the racial tension has gone both ways. The combination of the Preston/Cherrybrook and Cole Harbour/Auburn communities are worlds apart and not a good social mix. However, I believe the blame goes equally both ways and should not be placed solely on one group’s lap.
Why doesn’t the OP step up and state the real cause? Hypocrite.
Quite frankly, speaking as a Caucasian who’s lived in Dartmouth for 40+ years, I’m inclined to believe that it was probably the white kids who, if they didn’t quite singlehandedly start it, made the situation what it was. In this day and age black youths aren’t exactly meek and mild, but we’ve also got quite a few white kids who are pretty nasty racists.
In fact, no shortage of white parents who are pretty nasty racists. A lot of this problem has to do with kids who hear vile stuff at home, and then bring that baggage to school. Unfortunately it’s almost impossible to identify, let alone prosecute, parents who ultimately are responsible for this shit.
My personal belief is that the problem is also exacerbated by busing. Kids aren’t stupid, and they realize early on that if you get into a war with other kids who live where you do, that you up your after-hours risk levels considerably. But if you’ve got hundreds of kids being bused in from Eastern Passage and North Preston and other areas, they know that regardless of how much hate and discontent they perpetrate at school, they remain relatively safe in their home districts.
Perhaps any current racial tension between whites and blacks could be partially blamed on the media due to there recent stirring of the racial pot?
Is this the school that had the riot on friday or something? Had around 23 cop cars up at the school? If it is, isn’t the reason suppose to be someone making a comment about a certain someone who was shot deserving it? As well, if it is, I think it was pretty much an even number of girls and boys that got arrested? Don’t know if it’s the same place though.

I don’t know anything much about this incident– for all I know, it could have been Asian and Native kids getting into it, or jocks vs stoners, or the chess club and the choir. But, for the sake of argument, I’ll assume that it was black and white kids.
It seems like the OP is suggesting that since the media didn’t automatically blame the black kids for starting it, the media are biased and “liberal.” I’m guessing OP doesn’t mean liberal as in the Liberal party, or liberal in the since of classical liberalism (although, withholding judgement until all the facts are known might indeed be considered liberal in that sense).
Probably, he means “liberal” as in the American right wing slur on the media, which is kind of crazy eight ways from Sunday. The media mostly have a corporate bias, not a left or right bias, although the American media have a more or less “Republicans are legitimate; liberals are crazy dirty hippies” attitude. That attitude, I’ll note, has mostly been rejected by the American public; see: the election of B. Obama, and the collapse of the daily newspaper industry.
The situation in Canada isn’t as bad as in the states, but it shadows it a bit.
What this has to do with a bunch of teenagers brawling in Cole Harbour, I haven’t a clue.
I tend to agree with Realist, I grew up in EP, and went to CHDHS starting the year of the last major brawl when they then took away lunch so we went home by 2pm. I know that there are a lot of racists living in EP still, and that white racists kids are a lot more likely to start a fight with kids they don’t like because they think they’ll get away with it. On the otherhand, a black kid will assume that if he is involved in a fight with another kid, that is going to get in trouble for it, ESPECIALLY at that school, given it’s “supposed racial tension” history.
The root of the problem is how parents are raising their children, not where they come from, or that they’re being bussed in, or the liberal media.
C’mon, let’s cut the crap- Blacks can be just as racist, let’s not bullshit. There are many beatings in Halifax that are multiple cowardly attackers swarming one or two others, and frequently it is black on white. The media has to be careful how they report this, or all the Jesse Jackson wanna-be’s come out of the woodwork, playing the race card.This whole “underlying cause” rhetoric totally steers the conversation away from the fact that many youth, black AND WHITE, have role models that embody this moronic, cowardly way of life. I notice that the whole swarming thing arose around the same time as rap/hip-hop boneheads started to become celebrities. And the parents buy into the whole scene, too.
Government need to enact a law like the NHL did: anything more than 1-on-1, and the extra shitheads get more time (or a bigger slap on the wrist…).
Tim – I think the OP’S point that these schools ecspecially Cole Harbour High have always had racial fighting. To add to that, the media has always reported it as such to hopefully get the full story out there to parents and the public I would think. Maybe the Media ignoring causes and indicators will carry over and cause the public to ignore these red flags as well, thus not solving the problem but hiding from it.
GUYUTE- I totally agree, I attended both Cole Harbour schools. And I found the whole swarming thing actually started when Reginal Denny the white truck driver that had his head caved in by “RIOTERS” during the LA riots this was televised across the world, and I guess the flipside to that is “well so was the swarming of Rodney King” but thats a whole other argument.
Like I said I attended both schools, I am a tolerant person who has befriended and even dated people from the black communities here in N.S. I can honestly say that most of the fights that I was WITNESS to was caused by aggresive blacks that singled weaker whites out, girls and boys. Then the White Eastern Passage kids who stuck together would come to their rescue and ensuing group fight would follow, another reason for these fights would be becuase of something that happened the previous weekend, honestly I think I can recall 3 fights through High scool that were caused by whites and it was only because something happened to their sisters or girfriends by black males the friday or saturday night before, I am not making this up, I was a fairly popular kid who was privy to alot of rumors but also privy to alot of what I considred truth.
Tim- Your statement about removing Men from the High School there are reasons why there are all girl/boy schools, is it so far fetched to you that maybe boys and girls distract eachother and maybe have a better learning environment around their own? I personally have been in the middle of one of these “riots” a few years ago and know all about them. Any incident that happens at that school gets crazy amounts of media attention and they usually make it out to be worse then what it actually is. Yes there is trouble there and there always has been but it is a HIGH SCHOOL! There is trouble at EVERY high school. Plus not every fight is racial. Some times its over drugs, girls, guys, whatever! Kids will be kids. Even Auburn has had problems with fights and what not but you dont see that blasted all over the news like CHDHS… the news is the news and shit like this gets the ratings up!
That’s right Cole Harbour Resident….keeping the races separate is the best way to promote tolerance, equality AND understanding. Just because Ontario wants to take a step backwards doesn’t mean Nova Scotia should follow suit.
Eastern Passage wants to build it’s own high school, and I think that would be a terrible thing. The only reason some EP residents ever leave EP is because they’re forced to meet new people in High school at CHDHS. I still keep close contact with my friends who were from Cole Harbour and Lawrencetown more than the ones I knew far longer from EP. So it definitely helps some people to be mixed in with new people and mindsets.
Friday was Auburn High School, not Cole Harbour HIgh.

Alright, so I go to Auburn, and I am white, and I was caught in the middle of the brawl on Friday, and it was black vs black.. A few random white kids jumped in trying to “help” their friends but other than that it was mostly just black people trying to fight each other. The fight moved towards the front of the school and a mother of one of the students showed up and started causing a lot of trouble, naturally the cops wanted to quiet her down and naturally the black males were not impressed with this so thats when the confrontation with the cops began. I personally saw 1 girl in a fight with a female cop, and watched 1 guy getting beat with a nightstick by a cop until a school official intervened and then the two got into a shouting match about how to handle what was happening around them. I have also heard rumours of tasering incidences.. but that remains to be seen
