Here Nova Scotians, here’s billions of dollars to assist you with your failing economy. Here is an opportunity to provide your workforce with stable jobs, a decent income, a reason to stay… —And we said FRACK OFF (we like being poor)
This article appears in Aug 28 – Sep 3, 2014.

Lots of places need somewhere to dump their trash, if we could solve our problems being the dump of North America, should we?
Fracking hasn’t even gotten past the testing phase and you’re saying we should look at it to solve our woes? I’m no NIMBY but you gotta be realistic about this.
What, Nova Scotians not believing that a finite fossil fuel industry will be totes awesome, not hurt anything and save the economy? That’s ridiculous! I mean, coal has worked out so well, right?
I challenge anyone who thinks we have a so-called “Culture of Defeatism” to sit down with a case of T#n P#nny and some M@tt M!ngl#w**d 8-tracks and…..
Aw crap >: (
If anybody needs me I’ll be in the tub. With the toaster.
*takes that vintage Ten Penny before Ivan goes* Yoink!
Oh Man, does anything suck worse than an 80’s flashback?
I think not.
Opposition = Defeatism. Nice. If I choose to not drive my car into a wall rather than apply the brakes, am I a defeatist?
I’ll have a Ten Penny over here, thanks. None? Make it an Alpine!

So it turns out coal may have been a bad idea. Too bad we didn’t know that hundreds of years ago. Now we do know the effects of our thirst for energy so we should proceed with caution.
The fracking industry is still quite small so a lot of these created jobs would be filled by experts from afar. Fracking would provide some jobs, but how many and for how long is the question. Building a highway provides a lot of jobs but what happens to those workers after the road is complete? Maybe they’re right back to where they started only after doing irreversable damage to the environment.
And anyone thats truly worried about NS’s coal consumption should question the Sable Gas project before fracking. Or possibly just entertain the idea of clean coal, it is possible and a lot more feasible then fracking at this point.
Yup, fracking is the environmentally sustainable choice and, the answer to all our economic woes. Let’s drill mile long holes in the ground, force toxic sludge into them, then spoil billions of gallons of our fresh water on the off chance that we will be the one place on the planet where nothing will go wrong and the government won’t be left holding the bag. Sweet, where do we sign up? Let’s face it, the only reason the industry wants to move here is because of the worldwide opposition to this form of energy collection, or you can be damn sure they would’t be knocking on our door.
CULTURAL LINKAGE
Yes, I think you’ll find there is a direct linkage between a culture of defeatism and a culture of poverty which, in its turn, is directly related to a culture of stupidity (cf. the Halifax Underclass) which, still further, is related to a culture of excessive public masturbation which has arisen from a corresponding culture of infatuation with the banjo. They all go together.
Thank you very much.
A pleasure as always.
Cheerio!
What a bunch of morons listening to a bunch of eco-terrorists. Last one gone, turn off the lights. Already told my kids to head out west as there is no future here.
Lol, and the streets in Quebec are paved with federal transfer gold. Ass!!!
Yes Dim Tim, please send your kids far away from here. If they think anything like you we don’t want them around.
Some of us form our opinions based on facts, not on speculation. It is a fact that areas that have had fracking now face poisoned ground water among a plethora of other environmental and health side-effects. It is (biased) speculation that setting up a fracking operation here in N.S. would magically make us a ‘have’ province and fix every bad thing about our neck of the woods you could imagine.
I’m glad the government actually listened to what the people wanted. This would never have happened under a Conservative banner – or NDP for that matter. And I’m glad the majority of the people commenting on this thread don’t seem to have their head shoved so far up their ass that they can’t tell which way is up or down. This one was a no-brainer.
you can tell where the 2 digit/3 digit IQ line is drawn on this thread…..
Sigh. We will just have to beg for bread from our rich cousins, the Newfies…
Most of these idiots get their info from garbage movies like Gasland. Fracking has been going on safely and successfully for 60 years. Have there been a few problems? Of course what industry doesn’t. But all this fearmongering is getting us is our kids leaving, higher taxes, higher unemployment rates.
The Nova Scotia version of fracking is digging a deeper and deeper hole for what little is left of our economy.
I was a pilot in the Frackland Islands invasion.
That money you’re talking about, Tim, would never be a benefit to our government anyway. Just like the “windfall” of the ship building contract, our government would just borrow against it in its entirety before we see penny one, leaving more debt.
I get it Tim, you’re going to miss your kids. You are sad that they are leaving. Allowing fracking in N.S. would not be a magic cure-all to make your kids want to stay here. I (and the majority of Nova Scotians) are not willing to risk our drinking water and our long-term environment for relatively miniscule short-term gains. I commend the government for listening to what the people want and not bending to the interests of a (foreign) corporation FOR ONCE.
Tax breaks for solar panels combined with the panels being manufactured as well as shipped from Nova Scotia. Spread the wealth around a bit. The wind turbine manufacturing brought jobs, let’s try other technologies.
Throw in rewards for innovators in the sustainable energy fields and the companies that allow such innovators use company equipment for manufacturing parts. That way the government doesn’t have to build a bigger school.
Thermal energy using thermal panels that utilize temperature differences have been proven to work as well; so thermal panels can be something among other sustainable technologies that can be taught to prospective innovators in a government industry cooperative relationship.
Most importantly, the government shouldn’t jump the gun on whether or not the subsidies are successful until enough time has been given to actually see the benefits. No more falling for politician on politician bashing, over graphs that aren’t mature enough to be criticized.
We need to be united in a cause. At least the anti fracking success shows that something along this route can be achieved.
Your worry about the water is a propaganda ploy of anti frackers. There are hundreds of thousands of wells world wide with a miniscule portion of bad water. I suppose we should ban farms as they also can contaminate the water table.
Defeatists!

I’m all for it…
when your tap water’s flammable, it’s easier to burn this whole fucking place to the ground.
That was a cheesy special effect from Gasland.
That was an insult to cheese and I’ll have none of it.
Ivan…everything in that photo (including the hypocrite and excluding the paint) was reusable and recyclable. 🙂
LOL – I believe strongly in getting the maximum amount of use out of hypocrites. >: )
And where does nylon, plastic, etc come from? Why that evil oil.
ivan, think of the uses for recycled hypocrites….
Indeed, the mind fairly boggles at the potential usages.
solar fricking roadways, the grease will hold a charge and the hot air will melt the ice.
Our entire world is run on oil, which is bad for the environment – do you people honestly think you are being clever by pointing that out? This world is doomed no matter what happens – (see the Pacific Ocean) – you fossils just don’t have to deal with it cause y’all are gonna be dead soon and want your kids to live faiirly close-by as you croak. I can’t fault anybody under the age of 60 for wanting to make sure they have clean drinking water until they are at least old enough to be considered out of touch with reality by them dang youguns.
Just got through reading this, Hoist

All the more frightening because Schlosser sticks to the facts and avoids the hysterical rhetoric of the anti-nuclear peace movement. Whether or not you believe in Branch Rickey’s dictum that “Luck is the residue of design”, we, as North Americans and human beings have been far luckier than we perhaps deserve.
Now, If only someone could plumb Soviet era archives and write the history of Russian nukular mishaps……… >: 0
I put the blame squarely on ole J.D. for shooting at some food and then allowing the corporations to take over so Jethro could have his cement pond, then go on to blame Oppenheimer with his ” I am the bringer of death” attitude. This is the future we get by letting these actions fuelled by greed guide mankind

GOOD NEWS! GOD IS LOVE!
ivan, dammit. ordered the book, thanks for the link. WTF I may as well sink back into the pit of despair as I was in the 70’s. I have too many hostages to fate.
Well Bro tim once your kids get tired of living in a polluted over priced hell, they’ll have a nice green Nova Scotia to return to ….isn’t that a nice thought ?
looked for a website that wasn’t an environmental /green rages fest . found thishttp://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/13/world/americas/oil-sand-industry-in-canada-tied-to-higher-carcinogen-level.html?_r=0

Hee hee, BDM – I’m like the resident “Heisenberg” of books >: )
Bro Tim gets all his facts and science from oil company CEOs.
***Tumbleweeds blowing in the wind***
LTWWB just became very quite, too quite.
quite what?
Better than getting from “Gasland. Again where are all these catastrophic water ways and wells? Nothing like the hyperbole from the anti frackers. Yup we’ll just wait for more Federal handout dollars instead of becoming a have province.
For fuck sake Tim, do your own research sometimes. It took me all of 3 seconds to find this clip on youtube and there are hundreds more just like it. But yeah, there’s no risk to the water table because some company spokesperson said so…do you eat everything you’re spoon-fed?

quiet[kwahy-it]
1.making no noise or sound, especially no disturbing sound
As if no one here ever made mistakes….I admit to making a lot of mistakes.
That’s exactly what I’m talking about, a special effect from “Gasland”, repeated over. I also suppose you think a cell phone will turn a gasoline pump into an inferno.
LOL ‘special effect.’
Whatever Dim Tim, ya can’t fix stupid. I don’t need to convince you, we’ve already won so suck a nut.
