I’m bitching on behalf of all hairstylists new to the industry. Hairstyling is a self-made buisness in which it takes about 3-5 years to even achieve full time work. When we start we get paid miniumum wage at part time hours. How the hell does the government expect us to pay back $200.00/month for student loan? No wonder 80% drop out of the industry after one year! It’s hard to play the part of a stylist when your freakin homeless and starving for frigsakes!

  1. I sympathize with you. You have good reasons to bitch for sure. You don’t sound like the type to pretend you’re frigging helpless so you can collect welfare. Unfortunately there are more of those and less of you and me.We still have student loans to pay, and we’re working our asses off to just barely make a living. And we’re not even out there having fun getting drunk each payday, because we have more pride to work than just collect welfare. But shoot, the system prefer people to be good for nothing,so we fall through the cracks.I wish you all the best. Keep at it. And I truly wish you were only joking when you wrote that title: A blow for some food. Don’t give up, and don’t give head. Not even for food. You deserve a better life than sinking that low.Good luck. Stay clean, stay safe. We’ll succeed, we will win, in the end. Believe me. I am no different from you.

  2. I’m 50 (ancient by coast years) and stil owe 30,000 plus on my tuition as an IT network engineer. But then I have to not only hit full time school every two years max, (fees would shock the hair weavers) and then certify for just about equal money. If I’d only known that if I had just been nicer to women with blue hair, and kids with pins through their nose, puffed hot air on them, (from a dryer..come on now) and learned the art of throwing gell, I could have dispensed with all that calculus and algebra stuff.who knew. get real, get a life in a job with employment prospects in it (you know one of them nasty j things..) find someone of the same of opposite sex to cohabit with, get yourself a newpaper column on sundays, and get on with your life. stay away from the community college and bars of dubious repute, do some research, check expected salaries and look to a brilliant future, after school that is.35.00 for an everyday haircut from someone I dont want to know whom could not get through high school and went to beauty college is a bit much, whatever your cut.come to think of it, there is a freebie lesson from your employer there…it’s a business. lesson one. back to domino college.

  3. David: So being 50 and at least $30,000 in debt qualifies you to dole out career advice? Her job is just as valid as yours and she might just be out of debt before she hits 50, unlike some people. She just wants some breathing room to get past the 3-5 years where an extra $200 a month makes a pretty big difference. And her problem isn’t one that is unique to hairstylists..most people don’t get a return on their education investment right out of school. It often takes a few years to work your way up the payscale.

  4. actually I own and manage an IT firm in town. my outstanding loan, (not from CSL mind you) is because my exams and certifications require upgrading every 18 to 24 months. My next is to be taken in Houston and the cost is approximately 10,000 for the exam along with travel, hotel and expenses in Texas. I’m not complaining. After all, it’s passed onto the client ultimately.Part of any career search or school curriculum should be a realistic assessment of market and renumeration, or perhaps they don’t teach that in school anymore, or you just missed that week having better things to do, or it just pulled a zoomie over your head, who knows? If I had a daughter in prison or in hairdressing school, I’d talk sense into the one in zippo college first.but then, that’s life, and I don’t bitch about it after the fact to the Coast. but then, that’s what gives underachievers the student loan money the terms of what were indicated up front I assume in documentation signed before the loan went through that I would suspect the intention was understood by the signee. that loan money comes from the likes of me, and all the other me’s and you’re welcome.the commentary has however made our shits and giggles night. cheers.

  5. For a supposedly well-educated man, you really are an idiot. Where do you think we would all be without people who go to “zippo” colleges to get certified to perform those “underachieving” tasks that we all take advantage of? You don’t get your hair cut? (maybe not if you are balding).A job is a job and anyone who takes the time to go to school to do what they enjoy and work hard to get there makes them anything but an underachiever. I would hate to be a kid in yourhousehold. “No son, don’t follow your dreams, follow the market analysis and get a job like Dad that means something”And a whole lot of IT people go to fly-by-night “zippo” colleges too. You’ve probably hired a few of the graduates.Hope you show them more respect than your hairstylist.

  6. “Could not get through highschool”? How can you just assume that is the case. Get off your high fucking horse, Mr. Big Engineer. You must be proud eh? You’re better than everyone else. Must be nice. I actually feel bad for you. You still owe that much money and you’re 50? Shitty deal. You better hurry and hope you can start saving for retirement.

  7. Hey Dave, you’re a prick. Since we’re so quick to assume things about others based on what they post on the internet, I’m going to assume that the reason Dave owes 30,000 in loans is because no one wants to hire an asshole.$30,000 in loans and you’re 50? I’m laughing at you, seriously, I’m laughing in your face right now. FWIT, I paid off all of my student debt 5 years ago and I’m pushing 40. Sucka.

  8. right on ppl, david shithead… at least J-bean has a brain and a heart.can’t say the same for you peabrain mr. freebee job counsellor with your arrogance, we’re all surprise you were even hired. 30,000 in loans, wow all that money spent over nothing.

  9. That $30K you owe obviously didn’t pay for English grammar classes:”but then, that’s what gives underachievers the student loan money the terms of what were indicated up front I assume in documentation signed before the loan went through that I would suspect the intention was understood by the signee.”What kind of train wreck garbage is this run-on nonsense? Nice lack of punctuation, Dilbert. Arrogant prick.

  10. it’s david, eric, not dilbert :)hum, an IT firm you say, david ?with your exemplary PR and enviable character of condescension, i am sure you’ll go far 😉

  11. His IT company probably consists of doing shitty webpages for his mom’s friends businesses.Fuck, what a douche, I had it when I see classic overachiever types dumping on those in society that they consider lesser than them. Get a grip, asshole. How rewarding can it be to go on a local rags feedback section and rag on people who are obviously beneath your station in life? C’mon, please respond some more so we can all laugh at your obviously well paid education that taught you correct speling and grammar so well. (spelling mispelt on purpose)

  12. Hairstylists do not start off on min-wage with part time hours if they don’t want to. There are plenty of jobs for stylists in Halifax where you start on full-time hours with commission! Maybe you’re being too selective for a newbie to the industry. Sometimes you have to start off with a job you don’t think is quite so hot to get your grips on the hair industry, that is just the way it is. Take a peek around at some other job prospects, if you have the drive and determination and passion and some common-sense/natural talent you will succeed quicker than you think. Sadly it seems you’re stuck when there are options laid out in front of you, you just are choosing not to see them or maybe entertain the possibility of them.Good luck!Chin-up and suck it up!
