Psychiatrists and prison officials are coming forward to testify in the death of a Canadian teen girl who was isolated in solitary confinement for three years straight. The psychiatrist is calling the girl “Sadistic, tyrannical and unstable” and the officials said they had no other option but to confine her.
Think for a minute how long three years is – 365 days times three. Now realize the girl was 19 when she died so she was only 16 when locked in there. Alone. Cold. It must have been pure torture. While being treated at a Mental “Health” Hospital here in Nova Scotia, I was also put in isolation. It was no where near the length of time this teenager experienced. They isolated me for 3 weeks straight for refusing meds. I was never violent. I was (literally) thrown in there because I “seemed agitated”. During that 3 weeks, I was forced to use the bathroom on the floor like an animal, was given no utensils for food, no blankets, nobody– for 21 days. They lied and said I was banging my head on the door. I banged on the door with my fists to try to get someone to come let me out to use the bathroom. Nobody ever came. I know how they lie to save their jobs. They are liars.
This girl spend 3 years in solitude in the prison system. This is not health or proper treatment. This is torturing people until they die and it is illegal and wrong. If anyone is “Sadistic, tyrannical or unstable” in this situation – it was it was the psychiatrists or “professionals” and prison officials-not the poor teenage girl! This is just another example of our media spin-doctoring the mistakes of these government officials. The legislation regarding our youth correctional facilities and mental health needs to change. Those responsible for the torture of that girl need to be prosecuted and held accountable for what they have done to that young girl. Stop dragging her memory through the mud to save your asses. Our mental health system is the shits for sure. Half the hospitals are closed down so there is no where to place people in crisis. What a shame that the government doesn’t think mental health is worth the dollars. They figure it is far better to pay a big shot a big pension instead. Well, statistics show that over 80 percent of the population will suffer a mental health problem during their lifetime. Where will they go for help? Sad state of affairs.
The “mental health” hospitals AKA fascist torture chambers only poison people with toxic drugs or lock them in solitary. There is no real “treatment” going on in these joints. Stay out of ’em if ya know what’s good for ya!

I’m not saying this solution is the right one. It sounds like a stupid solution. But I’m asking you if you can do better. Nobody deserves to have their lives put on the line just to do a job. If someone is violent with me, I would restrain them in the way i know how. Which, in my UNPROFESSIONAL case, is a fucking choke hold.
Obviously what they did was absolutely horrendous. But… i’m tired of people bitching and moaning but offering no alternatives.
If nobody offers alternatives, the situation doesn’t change.
A solution would have been to treat this child with some dignity and to provide councelling/therapy for her. How do you know she was violent, crayons? How would you react if you were being abused, kicked in the head by guards, called a cunt by guards, as reported in the paper… She should have received proper care – Not the neglect and abuse she had to endure – throwing her in a solitary cell for THREE YEARS until her demise! Civilized? I think not. We live in a very sick fucking world.
Two issues here. One of liability and one of inadequate treatment. I feel the liability issue centres around the ability of treat this person without violating their rights and, on the other side, maintain the safety of the staff “handling” her. This girl was moved from facility to facility countless numbers of times over the last few years or so. That indicates that she may be very difficult to handle. This is a safety issue for staff dealing with violent people. The gray area is how much force is needed and are they liable if the person in question gets injured. That in turn may cause hesitation where staff may be “standing around” strategizing while she’s injuring herself.
My nephew used to work at the Burnside prison as a guard and one time he was part of a team called up to the East Forensic Hospital section to subdue a very violent man who was threatening the staff and injuring himself with a shiv for lack of a better term. The psychiatrist on hand said they could not go in and subdue him with the gear they had with them. He was a human being not an animal. The captain of this team explained this was the quickest and safest way to get the job done. The discussion went on with no resolution and the team left with the guy still in there screaming and hurting himself. They were called back later and did the job as originally planned. So wrangling between staff only added to the injury. This would be the inadequate treament aspect of the problem.
I don’t know why the staff dealing with this girl did what they did. It could be incompetence, a lack of proper protocol in dealing with such cases. Maybe this girl was hell bent on killing herself and nothing short of strapping her down would stop that. It is a very sad story and hopefully some fresh ideas on how to keep something like this from happening again will come out of it.
I’ would like to think the guards knew how they were treating the girl was wrong.When it’s all said and done, shit rolls down hill.
