What’s wrong with the above statment – I make a shit load of money by Nova Scotia standards, I have a comfortable and modest home with every energy effecient upgrade reasonable for a home of its age, and I can hardly afford to keep the place heated to 19 degrees for the 8 hours a day I am home. It literally cost me more than 500 in heating fuel and electricity to keep the house warm.

This is my first winter in Nova Scotia and I think its going to be my last… my last, much larger and much less insulated house cost almost half as much to heat to 22 degrees.

Nova Scotia is sitting on a pile of oil and natural gas, yet we pay the highest fucking rates in the country for these necessities of life. Meanwhile back in ontario (yea im ducking the shit you’re all slinging), they pipe in Natural Gas from god knows where for half the price of oil heat… not to mention how much safer and cleaner it is. Why is it so backwards here? Ooooh, we have a natural resource we can use… lets price it through the roof then sell it to the rest of the country. Fuck, what a shit show this place is. Like a battered wife, keep on raping me but i’m outta here first opportunity I get. —Fucked Up Place

  1. I hear that. You can just imagine, how the rest of us, of more limited means, must be doing then. It’s crazy and makes me want to move Out-West just for the cheaper heating bills, alone.

  2. and 70 grand a year don’t really buy you much anymore, a couple bags of smokes, some dope, booze, and munchis, eat it up after awhile. and oh yeah, don’t forget going and dining out like a fucking politition most nights.

  3. so, i can never figure these things out, but at a guess, you’d be clearing 4,000 a month? and you can’t afford $500 for the heating bill in january?

    re-work your budget. somethings wonky.

  4. You are obviously living a lifestyle far above your means. You earn, with anything I’ve read, well above the average NS income. Poor financial decisions and drowning in bad debt doesn’t translate to being “poor”.

You can afford power, you just can’t afford your own dumbassery!

  5. OP, there is a chic on this website that has 3 degrees and she is only working minimum wages. I suggest that you STFU before she goes apeshit all over you.

  6. why would she have 3 degrees? wouldn’t she learn after the second degree, that another degree didn’t help her advance her situation. dumb shit. i agree with OP 70 grand a year is barely getting by. Now a days u need at least 6 figure salary to retire when u get old.

  7. OB most people see you as the problem, & just a complainer .
Mostly IMO because they are too damn stund to figure out that if enough people stand up about it m there will be change.
But short of that … you could do what some of us have done, wood stoves, some wind & solar systmes one of my friends up the road is now off the grid. You can escape the oil electric trap , but it takes some work & its not cheap to get up & running, but cheap to maintain & operate.

  8. 70 grand is barely getting by? Are you fucking kidding me? I make 55k/year and I’ve been able to knock off $14,000 of student debt in the past year plus start saving for retirement. On top of that I pay rent on a decent little place, eat good food, take pleasure in my chosen hobbies, and travel occasionally. Maybe 70k is “barely getting by” if you consider three vehicles, a 3000 sq.ft. house, and a jet ski to be the standard of living. Otherwise, fucking learn to budget.

And $500 in January in a single-detached house isn’t that bad. I lived in Ontario, had the natural gas you seem to have a boner about, and our heat in February one year was $900. Was so glad I had housemates.

    Do you mean me, GV?

I don’t make min wage. Never did and never said I did. Even on EI I made much more than min wage (in fact, I had the maximum benefit EI pays out).

Last time I made min wage was 2002 before the student pay scale went up at the university library I worked at.

“either bird lady fucked up, …just sayin”.”

    No shit, captain obvious.

  10. And on topic: I agree with SHITTY-D. You seem to be, uh, living beyond your means if you can’t afford to heat your house on 70k a year.

With my student loan payments taken into consideration, I only need min $35k to live, which includes food, rent, loan payments, food, cat food, internet/cable, cell phone, prescriptions, transportation, etc… plus some spending money for random shit. Anything beyond that $35k is set aside in short term, long term and retirement savings.

Of course I don’t have ANY consumer debt so….

If I don’t have the cash in the bank to buy something, I simply don’t buy it. It’s nice to buy something and not have to make payments on it down the road.

I even managed a $750 vet bill this week. *shrug*

  11. To some, the more money you have the more you spend.
These days, a lot of families are left with more week than money before payday.

PK Your a smart cookie to stay away from consumer debt. 🙂

  12. $70k a year and you can’t pay heat? Something wrong there.

Ever since HU and I decided to stick up a big middle finger at consumer debt (i.e. credit cards) six years ago, we’ve never had to worry about filling the oil tank.

  13. Yep, you obviously are spending in other luxurious areas. I have a 2 bedroom apt, make a bit under $40k and my electric heat is around 300 a month in the winter. After winter 1 and many tears, I went on budget with NSP. While their rates are ridiculous, this allowed me to manage my payments and I still have money at the end of the month.

  14. Sometimes when back-flow preventors are not working correctly, ie, exhaust fans in the kitchen or bathrooms, can leak warm air out fast. Make sure these are working. Not closing off rooms you’re not heating can cause unbalance in the natural convection exchange.

I have 2 ETS units in my home (2000sq.ft) and pay $1800/yr for heat, power and hot water.

I’d get a smudge stick and check for leaks.

  15. I used to pay $1025 for this place (three bedrooms). When my dad retired and my parents sold their house and moved into my apartment, my rent was split as if I have 2 roommates.

My 35k figure was taking in account paying 100% of all rent/utilities and other expenses as I would move into a one bedroom plus den for my office. The money I’m saving, currently is going towards the business I’m starting and paying my student loans down faster. Hopefully, I can work for myself 100% someday.

I am also able to go out with friends, buy big ticket items and support my hobbies (which get expensive) WITHOUT using a credit card.

So, you can bite me ^^ 😉

  16. Right on, Kitty. My credit card is only for holding car rentals and/or accommodations if we’re on the road.

I can’t get my head around people living off credit cards.

  17. Hey PettyK , just a question, How much of that vet bill was for the euthanizing the cat & how much was the tests/treatment before hand.
Because I don’t know what the costs are anymore. its been over 10 years since my kids have moved on their own & I’ve had to deal with a cat in my house.
Also do they dispose of the body or do you have to do it ?

    Thanks in advance .
sorry to hear yer sad, that sucks for whatever reason.

  18. am i just stating the obvious here but moron, couldn’t you wait a month or so for the answer to your oh-so-important questions? or maybe just never?

  19. actually molly me love, he said sorry and he hasn’t spoken about suicide booths for many moons. you’ve come along way baby^^

  20. Thanks, More-on.

It cost $310 with tax to have her put to sleep and have her cremated. The burial and euthanasia was $140. We chose the cremation option because we didn’t have any place to bury her and we didn’t want her buried with other animals. We want her home with us.

She had an office visit, blood work and an x-ray, which was $400 and something. They did an ultrasound on her kidneys, but they didn’t charge us for that.

Expensive, but she was worth it.

  21. yeah because you c**ts have to have your homes heated to 25 so you have turned the atlantic provinces into your slaves. Now you’re here and you can’t take it.

You’re right op. I think you should go home. Sooner than later. You’re taking all the heat.
