Thank you to the airline who left our lives in a pilot’s hands who felt it was a better decision to land the plane in a hurricane, rather than putting us in a hotel for the night or keeping us in the Caribbean until the storm passed. I know, I know, it’s more of a risk to set the airline back by a few thousand dollars than it is to land in the middle of a hurricane with people puking, having panic attacks and scared that their last moments of life could possibly end on that plane that was being thrown around like a rag doll from the strong winds in Halifax that night. Even your flight crew was scared. That’s saying something. -Wish I Could Stop thinking About It

  1. Did he yell something over the intercom that sounded like “Holler, Huck bar”?
Don’t worry, OP. Modern technology has made floating debris fields a snap to locate.

  2. And you lived to bitch about! Maybe a glass of freshly-squeezed orange juice and a joint of Amnesia Haze?

  3. “Modern technology has made floating debris fields a snap to locate.”

Not if you’re flying into China.

    (too soon?)

  4. I never said anything about them being the RIGHT floating debris fields >; )
    Nah – not too soon.♥

  5. Poor Snowflake, you landed and walked away and got to bitch about it. Recently there was a plane whose passengers did not. Or maybe they did. Think about this while you bemoan your rough landing.

  6. And if they flew to Montreal and you were stuck there a day or two, you’d be bitching about that too. And don’t say you wouldn’t, because that’s all that was in the news the last time planes were grounded for weather. You fly, take a train, or drive in your own car, you take your chances.

  7. Pilots didn’t just get their license yesterday, they must have felt confident they could put the bird on the tarmac. The most dangerous parts of flying is taking off and landing with landing being more hairy scary at times. There are a lot of factors involved such as wind shear, crosswinds, etc. They may have had mechanical problems and needed to land asap.

  8. I think the pilot had a date with a slutapalooza who owned a very expensive business on SGR and the artist boyfriend can’t get it up despite injecting Viagra directly into his ball sack, and the pilot wanted a soft landing?

  9. Wow I seen that on the news. I’m glad you’re ok op. I’m sure a lot of people on the flight we’re scared! Pardon the rude person who wrote before me, people are brave and cold on a keyboard. That’s a terrible experience for anyone to have to do through.

  10. It’s awesome how everyone assumes she’s looking for pity. My sisters friend was on that flight and she was very scared. Every flight landing was cancelled that night except that one flight. Op has a point. There were ok mechanical errors, just bad judgement. Most of the passengers wanted to stay in mtl but the pilot said they were leaving . If anyone heard the radio interview you wouldn’t be so mean to this persons post. Who cares where her flight came from. Being jealous of a person enjoying a week of sun that they paid for doesn’t make them deserve a traumatic experience. People say a lot on a computer .

  11. Despite the negative comments, this is totally a legitimate rant. Passengers are at the mercy of the pilots. I common knowledge most pilots are flying way too much with not enough sleep, so you have to be concerned about some of the decisions they make. The decision to land wasn’t about getting people to their destination on time as was said in the press by their spokesperson, but as a way to ensure they didn’t face the burden of cost of flying to an alternate airport.

  12. A ROBOT PILOT?

It appears that the technology is there for robots to replace pilots on commercial flights. Programmed drones, and all that. As a result of the Malaysian Airlines disaster which may (or may not) have been the result of pilot intentions (errors?), the role of pilots is under scrutiny. Some say it’s time to replace them with robots. But would this have helped the flight from the Caribbean to Halifax?

While robots might be able to take over actual routine flight operations, it was the pilot’s decision to continue the flight in very adverse conditions that placed lives in danger. So what does this mean if the dream of robotized flight is to be made a reality?

It means that a further robot will be required to make the decision to take off in the first place. But such decisions, at least at the moment, are not within the realm of technological capability. Indeed, it could be argued that such a “reflective robot” is itself a contradiction in terms. Such decisions are not just now but never will be within the realm of technological capability.

Does this put a limit on the possibilities of technology in general? It would seem it does, and rightly so. But the positive point is that it puts reflective human judgement back where it belongs, at the center of the decision-making process. But of course reflective human judgement, being human, can err as it seems to have done in the Caribbean to Halifax flight.

Bro Tim… did you see the Calvin and Hobbes skit on Robot Chicken last night? Hilarious! Google it!

An interesting concept. I wonder if the day will come for the transit system in Halifax to have robots driving the routes. A nice pretty female robot with a sexy voice greeting passengers. I’d love to see the day when Mgmt. tells Wheels that he will be replaced by a robot ( that is, if in fact he’s actually a driver). Hell, I’d even cut my hair to give the female robot a wig to give her personality and character.

Well, we now have the technology for self-driven cars so I see no major obstacle for the introduction of robot-driven transit system buses which, after all, simply run on prescribed circular routes.

As you point out, once the transit system bus drivers on this site have been replaced by robots perhaps the intellectual level of the comments will rise exponentially. But this, of course, is by no means assured. As in the case of the cognitively challenged Caribbean to Halifax airline pilot, there is no guarantee that the vacuous, fatuous and mindless commenters which abound on this site will have been eliminated. Of course, we can always hope.
