I live in Cape Breton and last weekend went to HFX to visit my Daughter. She works at a preppy coffee shop. WE stayed at my daughters small apartment so she gave up her beedroom for us.On saturday she had to go to work at 6am but came home all upset, she got written up fo wearing white socks, which is forbidden in their bylaws. Even tho she told her boss that we were in her bedroom and she did not want to disurb us just for the right pair of socks. She is a hard worker for where ever she works and was very upset to be written up over a pair of socks. 3 writeups and you are fired! I think a verbel reminder would hav serviced!! One girl got written for leaving finger prints on a window??? Who sees socks when you work behind a counter!!I think this BOSS needs help,More manager training, People skills training,employer- employie relations training maybe 1 or all 3 BUT she needs HELP!!!!!!
I feel so bad that I caused her to be written up when I dont think it was really nessary.

  1. holy hell, I hope you didn’t teach her english… had to get that out there because… well… you suck at it.
those that want to flame me for that, go ahead… but it’s not the entirety of my reply, just the warm-up.

where the hell is this place? can you not allude to it so we can all protest against this idiocy with you?
    wrong color socks??? fingerprint???
that’s taking your position of power a little far, me thinks.

  2. White socks need to be outlawed for events other than running.

She needs to learn this at a coffee shop so she doesn’t get fired for it later when she has a real job and shows up to work a slob. This is what beginning jobs are all about. Developing work ethic.

  3. If there is any better reason to start looking for another job…I really can’t think of one !
the wrong color socks !! give me a break, someone should take a writeup sheet folded into a nice crumpled ball & shove it up the managers arse..where it truely belongs.

  4. So…white socks make or break a career “if not for you”. You’re an ass and so is the boss of this coffee shop. I work a bank, and myself along with a few other people wear white socks. Ooooooh, the humanity!!!

  5. C’mon OB don’t you know preppy coffee shops (and probably one that has fair trade coffee) are the worst places? The word “preppy” is key here. Don’t cheat or fuck with the poor plantation workers but our servers are fair game.

Where the fuck is this place. I want everyone to go there wearing sandals and white socks (knee highs).

  6. maybe she should leave this workplace. it doesn’t seem very employee friendly. she should apply at a less preppy coffee shop or possibly a place where her ankles are not exposed. or she should stick it to the man!

i am a green sock on left foot and yellow sock on right foot coaster.

  7. i’m guessing starbucks; i worked in a large grocery chain i on. (metro) and invariably every shift i worked a manager type made someone cry over something fuckung stupid; frankly i thought that confrontational man. style went out of fashion but apparently not

  8. I hope your daughter is getting an education to get the fuck out of there. Don’t worry OP. Something better will come along for your daughter. Just tell her to stick it out for now. Sounds like the manager is a power-hungry, self entitled PRICK loser.

  9. “if not for you”…this is a guess…but from your ridiculous post I have a feeling that you may be suffrering from all 3 types of mental retardation…?

  10. I think you guys need to learn to put yourself in the manager’s position. If this “preppy” coffee shop is part of a major chain, then they have uniform requirements imposed on them by their head office.
Typically head office inspectors are the biggest douches on earth, and if anything in the store isn’t perfect to the letter, the franchise suffers a large penalty on their score. Where I used to work, 2 or 3 uniform violations on the same shift lead to a failing inspection, and three failed inspections lead to serious consequences for the owner of the location.

This guy harassing the girl over socks has an owner breathing down his neck to make sure everything is always perfect, and he probably gets paid $2.00 an hour more than the rest of the staff.

  11. Written up for her sock colour? Lame. She should look for another job, there’s plenty of coffee shops around.

  12. OMG people…..This is the reason why kids have no fucking respect. How long has she worked there? She should KNOW she needs black socks, she should be prepared for work. If someone is sleeping in her room, she obviously took out all the other items needed for her shift the night before so as “not to disturb” her sleeping parents. So what did she expect to wear on her feet? Its her fault not the manager’s fault.

  13. That’s nuts. Sorry, but socks don’t make the coffee, sure, she should have been prepared for work, but sometimes things happen. To write someone up over socks is jackassery.

  14. Pretty sure it wasn’t the white socks themselves that she got written up for…. she got written up for not following the dress code….you have to draw the line somewhere. have you SEEN what kids find appropriate lately?

  15. Where’s Kay when you really need a balanced response involving sheep like NS matters?

    And a 1 and a 2 and a 3

  16. As a former employee of what I assume to be the same preppy coffee shop spoken of here, despite dress code policies, a verbal warning in this situation would have sufficed. The only exception to a verbal warning instead of a written warning in this situation would have to be if this was not the first instance that this particular employee had been spoken to about their dress code.

  17. Basil, I don’t give a fuck about other people’s employees or their dress code. If you’re my employee and you piss me off I’ll notice your socks are not within code. That’s all.

  18. piss you off or… get you off?

it’s easier to notice socks when they’re hanging from the ceiling fan.

  19. Right on cue, Basil.

Interesting, kay often talks about sheep and how do we create “sheep”? Make them dress all the same.

Tell me kay, in your IT/Marketing/Charity firm, do you have a dress code?

  20. So, according to you, as long as they’re your sheep, it’s okay to be a sheep.

“I don’t give a fuck about other people’s employees or their dress code. If you’re my employee and you piss me off I’ll notice your socks are not within code.”

Never mind that this comment totally contradicts your last comment…

  21. WHAT are you going on about?

I pay employees for their compliance. Some are paid for creative thinking but the majority of my staff are worth their non-professional wage which does not call on them for original thought. After all, you get what you pay for.

  22. Where is this coffee shop? I really want to know so I can go work their part time and wear nothing but white socks all the time. I have a sensitivity in my feet to certain types of dyes and materials, so all I can wear on my feet is pure white cotton socks. I’ll even get a note from my doctor. Let’s see them write me up then!

  23. I bet that your daughter works for the same coffee shop and maybe even at the same location as my daughter DID! Depending on the manager’s mood people were written up regularly for silly reasons while other times when it would have been appropriate (missed shift with no call in) nothing was done. My daughter’s major dilemma with the dress code came from the issue the manager had with the pants she purchased for work. They were plain black dress pants, made of a cotton/lycra blend from American Apparel. They were deemed to be inappropriate–after she wore them to work for two solid months I might add–and I had to go out and buy her new ones as she could not afford to buy new pants on the money she earned at her job. The manager deemed them jeans even though they were not denim nor did they even remotely look like jeans. My daughter also worked her butt off–was even responsible for training new hires and barely made minimum wage. After almost a year she got a great review which was to be followed by a raise which the manager made a big deal about giving her–TURNED OUT IT WAS FOR A GREAT BIG NINE CENTS PER HOUR!!! I no longer buy coffee from places like this as I can’t condone how they treat these kids–I buy my coffee from local sources like JUST US

  24. Wow, kay, belittling your entire workforce on a public forum. You must be real proud of your IT/Marketing/Charity workforce.

You’ve hit a new low! I guess you only hire good, white, Christian folk too, huh?

  25. “You’ve hit a new low! I guess you only hire good, white, Christian folk too, huh?”

I bet kay’s interviews ask inane questions like, “Are you gay or do you support gay marriage?” If so, no job and she probably calls the cops on the candidate claiming they’re a home-bred terrorist.

  26. I would have to bet that the coffee shop in question is either Starfucks or Second Fuck. I do like Satisfiedcustomer and support local. Even better than Just Us is Java Blend on North St. Best damn coffee in the city IMO

  27. Maybe she was written up because “I couldn’t get into my bedroom” was not the first time she had a creative reason for not adhering to company policies. I am sure there was NOOO way she was able to place her clothes out the night before, or tiptoe into the bedroom, open her drawer and get an item of clothing. I am sure she is a nice girl, but come on………
