Thanks, jerks, for closing down the proposal by Watts to re-open the discussion about the North Common land use. Everyone listened to the condo sap-story (boohoo, wind tunnels) about downtown for almost two hours, but when it came time to hear very valid concerns about the North Commons development, it was shut down right away.
The issue was brought back up because people have serious concerns about this (an issue that was never given much public input) and businesses and residents and users of the North Common wanted to have their concerns heard by Council.
Instead, garbage bags and taxi cab fare rates and MORE FUCKING UGLY CONDOS were debated.
CLOSING THIS ISSUE IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE RESIDENTS OF THE DISTRICT IN WHICH THIS DEVELOPMENT IS PLANNED. 19/21 OF COUNCIL, YOU SUCK SO MUCH.
JENNIFER WATTS: thank you.—You should be tossed out on yer collective arses
This article appears in Apr 1-7, 2010.

well jennifer, if you think you can do a better job, throw your hat in the ring, next election. i get a real kick of the ” i could have done betters”. if you can’t get a vote on something, well that politricks for you. really, enter your name in the rat race next time.
Thanks to City Council for not wasting any more time on this non issue. Get over it Miss Watts.
HAHAHA! You lost!
McCluskey has the only brain on that council!
Thank the god’s that 19 council members have at least a small inkling of intelligence & aren’t letting a small group of local residents take over the commons for their narrow minded views.
Because IMO if they cancel special events there…then get rid of the ball fields. I don’t play ball & I don’t want those people in my way when I feel like strolling where ever I wish in that space. Get rid of those tennis courts…many of us don’t play & we would have more room to wander ! same thing for the dumb ticket course…I mean skateboard park.
Yep lets make it a 100% green space that nothing but walking around in is the rule ! ! !
Or let’s continue using it like we do now. the small inconvenience of the occassional concert & other special events only interfer with the ball games for a short time , of an entire year !
More…you forgot that after removing all of those assets that City Council should find a way of spending 250k on “DO NOT WALK ON THE GRASS” signs.
I say the complainers should count themselves lucky…if they don’t piss off soon I am going to start a protest to bring back the Halifax Molsen Indy Race.
That’ll fuck’em.
DER?
Great idea.
I loved those races, they really are 100 times better than watching it on television. For those who don’t like it in their area…
I’ve got a simple solution …M O V E !
Go somewhere else this is a huge country, just piss off & find yourself a quiet corner of it to go sulk & feel sorry for yourself.
Cause 50,000 + of us want to get together & have a great time !
It’s once a year OP, suck it up. Yours isn’t the only neighborhood with issues. That said though, I do give kudos to councillor Watts for representing her district. Council needs more people willing to step up.
that race was awesome…the boy got to go wearing ear protection.
No one but you was there to discuss the commons. If you want to discuss issues that people care about, you gotta get those people into the meetings.
Most of the people in the room was there to talk about that “FUCKING UGLY CONDO”, which was an apartment building by the way, not a condo.
Let’s see . . . a few times per year 50,000 people get to see a big show on the Commons, a show at a scale the city couldn’t otherwise host . . . and a tiny group complains that they can’t have the entire place exclusively for their own personal use EVERY SINGLE DAY WITHOUT EXCEPTION.
I *could* be convinced that a facility like the Commons should be exclusively dedicated to sport use . . . EXCEPT for the fact that I have lost count of the times I have walked across the Commons and there was NOT ONE other person there. IF the ballfields were booked/used to OVERcapacity a case could be made that nothing should cut into the season . . . but as it stands right now the Commons is DEFINITELY an underutilized space.
Oh, and I *could* also get onside for an argument to build a decent-size stadium—I don’t actually PREFER to watch shows in the rain—but every time THAT option is proposed the same idiots go nuts about the prohibitive cost and the re-routing of the traffic patterns and the misuse of taxpayer dollars and blah, blah, blah . . .
SO! The commons as a concert venue for big shows? Fine by me!
Now . . . where do I sign that petition to bring the Red Hot Chili Peppers to our fair city this summer?
it’s a common for common use, say for public things like oh i don’t know A CONCERT
if you don’t like noise and condos i suggest a move to sheet harbour
I guess the people have spoken. By the way OP, the Commons is for all of HRM to use, not just north end Halifax.
OP. don’t dispair. You can always join the group of 18th century morons who protest any building going up that may block the view of our polluted harbour. I mean really lady. Give me a break! It is people like you and Councillor Watts who have allowed Moncton to blow right by us. Want a field? Move to the country.
you get to listen to the concert for free every year….
you’re lucky they aren’t ‘concert surcharging’ you on your land tax…
of course it’s whether you want to hear it or not…
perhaps you should rent your place for the day to people too cheap to want to pay ticket prices but still want to see the thing.
My issue with concerts on the commons is that the commons are supposed to be for EVERYONE’s use, not just those who can afford a $100 ticket (or whatever).
Also, the idea of some private company making a profit of the common land is contrary to the whole spirit of the commons.
I agree jennier. I want to put on a concert too. Can I use the Commons? No? Oh. Do the profits get put back into the municipality? No? Oh.
Jennifer…stop fucking around with my commons. Save up your money if you want a $100 ticket and if not don’t go or sit outside the gate and enjoy the concert from there…just don’t whine about it because you sound like a selfish bitch.
I don’t give a shit what you do on the other 300+ days of the year at the commons, but I enjoyed the concerts there and don’t want some whiny bitch complaining because I want to use the commons for THREE FUCKING DAYS A YEAR.
Yeah you said it…it should be for EVERYONE’S use and I want to use it for concerts…more every year if I had it my way. I can afford probably $1000 worth of concert tickets in the summer so I say lets have 10 concerts.
I don’t give a shit whether you can afford it or not just like I don’t give a shit whether you can afford the admission fee for every other event that happens in the city. That’s your problem, not mine.
Why would I base my choices in entertainment and liesure around what the poorest person in Halifax would do? I have earned the right to spend my money on whatever I want and I think going to major events my city is a great way to do that.
So you’re worried about people making a profit off the commons…well why don’t you go around the area and tell the hotels, pizza joints, restaurants etc etc that make a profit off the concerts that you don’t want them to have that extra income either.
I think you need to stop being selfish and realize THE COMMONS DON’T BELONG TO JUST YOU!!!
MY COMMONS will have concerts and if you don’t like it then stay away for that one fucking day. Really, is that too much to ask?
just an FYI, the commons upkeep & improvements come out of the taxpayers pockets.
Promoters (those dispicable people some of you are so hurt by possibly making a profit) bring large acts here by …spending a shit load of their money & hoping they get a big enough crowd so they can make a profit & they pay the City of Halifax 10’s of thousands of dollars to do so…before the show & any profit has been made.
Which means LESS money for improvements & maintenance has to come from the tax payer…but instead comes from the users who pay the promoter for a ticket to the event .
Let’s put the Commons back to it’s origninal use. A place for livestock to graze.
Bro Tim can you just imagine the pandemonium that would break out at city hall if someone tried to bring a cow onto the pennisula !
They almost lost their collective minds over a couple of chickens…not to mention how many residents lost it as well !
Grazing animals on the Commons. I am still boggled that horses are still stabled & occassionally let out over by the Garrison Grounds
…guess it goes to prove if you have enough money & know the right people you can do anything.
But let some poor unconnected smuck try it & they’d be run off the penninsula in a New York second ! ! !
