1) Heartwood (6250 Quinpool, 425-2808) Probably the top fresh and local paradise for vegetarians and vegans in Halifax. Plus, it’s full of musicians working behind the counter. Heartwood specials for the week-end include the Lonely Hearts Club Sandwich, with soyanaise and smoked tofu, the Macca-roni, vegan-style with tahini, nutritional yeast, garlic and broccoli and some Strawberry Fields shortcake for dessert.

2) Veggie Burger from the Wooden Monkey (1707 Grafton, 444-3844). Ronnie Wood ate there and owner Lil MacPherson brought the rest of the Stones a wild blueberry pie when they were here. I’m sure MacPherson has plans to lure Sir Paul to the Monkey. Plus, the veggie burger frequently wins readers awards here at The Coast, so it’s a sure thing.

3) A tofu salad sandwich from the Good Food Emporium (2179 Gottingen, 422-3150) or their vegan salad is always reliable from this homey little restaurant run by a cooperative of cheerful (is there any other kind?) neo-hippies. Plus, the baked goods, like date squares, brownies and molasses-ginger cookies are awesome.

4) A vegan breakfast from Mary’s Place Cafe (2752 Robie Street, 454-2558) is essential for keep your rhythm before a gig. It’s a diner full of well-fed, hungover artists most mornings. Choose from three of 12 items on this decidedly Lebanese menu, like the curry rice, spinach , fatouch salad, lima beans, veggie lasagna or baba ganoush, but make sure you get the garlic potatoes! All for $7.99.

5) Short of all that, the band can always order falafels from Tony’s Donair (2390 Robie Street, 422-4833) across the street. Just don’t get anything from the brown stuff rotating around on a stick. That would be donair meat.

Andy Murdoch is an awesome guy.

  1. The Macca-roni salad just cracked me up. I say to the Heartwood, have that Paul McCartney photo ready to be signed. He would be a fool on a hill not to eat at your establishment.

  2. He probably would be pissed off that you describe his first wife as ‘dear old Linda’. Not
    a nice choice of words.

  3. I’d second DJJ’s comment. Satisfaction Feast is a sweet little neighbourhood restaurant. The vegan peanut butter balls, chocolate tofu cheesecake are amazing.
