[image-1] Last night kicked off the slew of great, and may I add free, Canada Games concerts. I’ve seen my share of Grand Parade shows, but hadn’t been to one since I think the Junos, where I was likely also sardined to see Joel. And last night, sardined we were once again, which is great. Thousands showed up, sang along and bobbed in unison. Downtown was spirited and it was really lovely to see so many people on the streets. Mayor Kelly did his usual candy hand-out, there was free cider, Darrell Dexter showed of his “singing” chops and even

Everybody dance now
Shine up them dancin’ shoes, folks. Word around the campfire is there’s going to be a flash mob tonight at the Joel Plaskett show at Celebration Square. A video of the choreography for Plaskett’s “Nowhere With You” has been circulating the interwebs for a few days, giving you dancing machines the chance to take part. […]
Canada Games photo-blog by Courtney Kelsey & Zachary Barkhouse
This blog will follow the development of a project about the Canada Games being photographed by Zachary Barkhouse and Courtney Kelsey. Each day the two will present a short series of photos that document spectators watching the events and participating in surrounding activities.
Canada Games song “Supersonic” is super dull
I’m not sure why athletic competitions need their own songs (no one will ever top this) but here’s the Canada Games official song, “Supersonic” by Chantal Kreviazuk: I dunno, I’m not a music critic, I’m stretching outside my comfort zone here, and my arts colleagues at The Coast might tell me I’m all wet, but, […]
Canada Games is not the Olympics; not even a NFL football game
[image-1] Says the Herald: A lack of television coverage of the 2011 Canada Winter Games has ticked off some Nova Scotia fans… He said it is disappointing major broadcasters like CBC or CTV do not have additional cameras and crews in Nova Scotia for the two-week celebration of athletics and culture that has about 2,700 young athletes from across Canada in the province, along with hundreds of supporters. “Isn’t CBC supposed to be our national broadcaster?” he fumed. A similar story was heard from other frustrated fans, some of whom called or emailed The Chronicle Herald to complain about the
Canada Games Opening Ceremonies
[image-1] National Sports channel TSN, in partnership with CTV, offers up Friday’s night’s opening ceremonies from the Metro Centre. I have to give the organizers credit for their choice of performers, amongst them Rich Aucoin, The Stanfields and especially Tanya Davis, whose poem was a highlight. But I wished we’d had a chance to enjoy Aucoin’s introduction and performance before the cameras swooped down on the athletes parading into the arena. And who chose the lighting and set design for this thing? All those empty seats at the beginning—later filled by the athletes—looked terrible. And dancers in toques and sweaters
Some famous musician, back behind that concrete thing somewhere
Walking past Grand Parade, er, I mean, Celebration Square this evening, I noticed they’ve set up the stage for all the noon concerts scheduled for the next couple of weeks. I have no idea how many people will attend these shows, but any more than a couple of hundred, and they’ll be stretching their necks […]
Really cool video of the Common skating oval
Just watch it: Send us your Canada Games pics and vids; email ourgames@thecoast.ca.
The summer of ’69
We’re really excited about getting reader-submitted Canada Games photos and videos (see below), but I’m seriously doubting that any reader can match the production values, videography and, most astonishingly, soundtrack of the 1969 Halifax Canada Games promotional video: Send us your Canada Games pics and vids; email ourgames@thecoast.ca.
Canada Games rejects security theatre
Be afraid! Fear, fear, fear! It’s what keeps the military state alive, keeps the cops well-funded. It’s your duty as a good citizen to be afraid. So, to help you along, at every turn, the powers that be need to inculcate fear, with visions of terrorists behind every bush, security theatre at every airport and […]
The Coast meets the Canada Games
Welcome to The Coast’s Canada Games blog. We’ll use this space to do what we do best: provide a bit of insight, a bit more snark and still more fun. Expect some commentary, some pictures and some video from our videographer. And expect some community involvement: When we say it’s “Our Canada Games,” we mean […]
