SMU women’s hockey is back

[image-1] It was a big victory for the Saint Mary’s University women’s hockey team Tuesday, after the board of governors decided to save the Huskies from the chopping block. The initial March 18 decision was to cut the team all together. But after hundreds of supporters raised voices and sent emails protesting SMU’s judgment, president Colin Dodds announced the school would pause its decision. National support for the team has been overwhelming, with big hockey names Hayley Wickenheiser, Cassie Campbell, and Troy and Tina Crosby backing the woman up. Jordi Bonet Explosion memorial is in pieces

[image-1] In 1966, a sculpture created by renowned Canadian artist Jordi Bonet was placed at the North Memorial Library. The statue was a tribute to those who died in the Halifax Explosion. But in 2005 the city deemed the statue a “public safety risk,” and it was taken apart and stored; the statue then sustained further damage and some parts went missing, including a cast bronze doll that represents the child victims of The Explosion. *What’s wrong: Dangerous stairs, Agricola and Sebastian Streets.

Who’s responsible? City recreation department. Remarks: A reader says the stairway has been deteriorating for some time, to the point that broken nails and wood are sticking out from its steps, and it’s become extremely dangerous. Asked about the stairs, officials at first didn’t know if they were a city or school board problem, but upon investigation the city sheepishly claimed ownership, and said they’d remove the wood and concrete and replace them with grass. Which is probably a good idea since the stairs don’t lead to anywhere.
