Presenting Today’s Warm Fuzzy

I was forwarded the following email from Rob MacArthur, who as you may recall, decided to close his much-beloved jam space The Rock Garden after five years last November. The Rock Garden won Best Rehearsal Space in this year’s Best of Music Poll and I thought I would share MacArthur’s response below. Wasn’t sure who […]

Baptized in Blood’s NKOTB Tattoo

On the eve of the Maritime Tattoo Festival, I asked London, ON metal up-and-comers Baptized in Blood about their best/worst tattoo stories. Lead singer Johl Fendley recalls a botched tribute to his childhood heroes.“I’ve had my neck and full chest tattooed but nothing will ever compare to the pain I went through getting my toes […]

Heather Rappard Projects Beautiful Feelings

Heather Rappard – formerly of estimable bitch-punkers Meat Curtains — also makes pretty, unnerving videos (check out the “heathersews” channel on YouTube to see blankets grow sequins and Chief Thundercloud in an moving aquarium t-shirt.) After successfully creating projections for this year’s Wearable Art Show, she’ll be doing more during The Chitz show at the […]

The Green Reflectors at Guitar Fest VII

Guitar Fest — the yearly rock n’ roll/surf/rockabilly twang party hosted by the Urban Surf Kings – features a solid lineup this year, including Brad Conrad, The Shakedown Combo, The Fabulous Venturamas and the Whiskey Kisses. We’re particularly excited to see The Green Reflectors — two severely talented young brothers from Bridgewater with a penchant for good old-fashioned surf anthems and Link Wray-styled guitar acrobatics. The show takes place Friday at the Seahorse for $8, and the Green Reflectors will be on first at 10pm. Go early.

Joel Plaskett and Shotgun Jimmie Team Up

Just a wee post about something nice during a murky week: those two beloved guys Joel Plaskett and Shotgun Jimmie are releasing a split 7″ on Plaskett’s New Scotland Records label called JimmiesStillJimmie/ThatsNotJoel. We have heard the Joel Plaskett side – amusingly, he’s the one who does “JimmiesStillJimmie” – and it’s a romping, slightly plaintive crunch-fest about being on the road and being a little sick of it. You can download it here: Joel Plaskett – Jimmie’s Still Jimmie And you can buy a physical copy of the 7″ over here.

Evolve Postering Charges Dropped

spinsandneedles.com HRM Courts are not pursuing the case against Evolve Festival organizer Jonas Colter involving $4,500 worth of postering charges. In an email to the Honorable Judge William Digby, copied to Colter’s lawyer Gordon Allen, the Municipal Prosecutor’s Office wrote yesterday that “there is no reasonable prospect of conviction on the charges before the court.” The case was originally intended to go to court Friday May 13. During last July’s Evolve festival, Colter was arrested and fined 18 tickets at $250 each for 400 Evolve posters that had been placed in several Halifax neighbourhoods. The charges cited that Colter had violated
