  1. And another knife goes into the carcass of what used to be the JAZZ festival. He’s a f***ing rapper. Wouldn’t know jazz if a piano fell on him. A total joke to have something like this appear.

  2. I agree with Bo. Nothing against rap, and some rap sounds jazz-ish, this guy, from the clips I looked at, is too far removed to be considered jazz. I like jazz, but I haven’t been inspired to go to J-fest in the last couple of years.

Looking forward to the Multi-fest, mind you.

As commented earlier, it would seem that this artist has appeal to rap fans and may bring in people to the Jazz-Fest that wouldn’t normally go.

  3. Actually if you listen to Talib which I did a lot of in NYC in the late 90’s early 2000’s and have seen him live- it’s very jazzy hip hop. I think the fact that jazz fest is bringing in youth and black culture will draw in a lot of young folks who may not necessarily come out to listen to contemporary jazz music. I am also super stoked about Digable Planets- the jaZziest jivest hip hop from the 90’s.

  4. Typical of Alison to celebrate any music that is not considered mainstream. But at least this time it is a reputable artist like Talib not the usual bunch of pretentious art-rockers with flannel and baggy cargo pants. You wear your bias on your sleeve darling!

  5. They need to change the name of this festival because it is no longer anything close to a jazz festival. There are lots of genres of performers who would fit under a jazz umbrella. Rappers and hip-hop types do not qualify and make a mockery of what used to be a very good jazz event. Shame on the organizers.

  6. Music evolves, and most genres (across the board) borrow from each other. Even if he was strictly hip hop/ rap, it’s not like Talib Kweli is a hard core, kill your mother, rape the bitches, kind of rapper. Or even a guy who just brags about his women and money.
Just because it’s not technically a purist’s jazz doesn’t mean it has absolutely nothing to do with jazz. The links above, I think, are some of his more popular works that more of the readers of The Coast would know. Not my favorites by any means. I’m more excited to go this year than I have been in a few years.
Digable Planets too?!! Frik. This is going to get expensive.

  7. So would you denounce The Roots, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Shad, Mos Def and countless others that have performed at the Montreal Jazz Fest? Go look at Montreaux, Switzerland which holds an international jazz fest annually. Here’s some of the headliners this year: Naughty By Nature, Prince Paul, Coolio, House of Pain, and Aloe Blacc just to name a few hip-hop acts.

Large international Jazz Fests have been stretching their boundaries to other genres which include jazz elements. One of these genres just happens to be hip-hop. If you think that the Halifax jazz fest is going to turn into a hip-hop festival overnight just because they bring a few conscious rappers to headline a couple of nights, you’re greatly mistaken.

And why not branch out? If you can get a totally different audience to show up for this it brings in more ticket sales, allows more exposure for the jazz fest, and who knows, maybe some of these “rap fans” will gain some exposure to traditional jazz elements and check out a few other shows.

Oh, and this “f***ing rapper” just happens to be performing at the inaugural Blue Note Jazz Festival this year in NYC. Yeah, I’m sure a famed NYC Jazz Lounge doesn’t know a thing about Jazz either… Shame on them..
