An interesting and rare crossover event for blues fans, Rheostatics nuts and word nerds: the Porkbelly Futures, a country-blues quartet out of Toronto, comes to town to throw down tunes from its brand new self-titled record at Bearly’s on Saturday. The group’s singer-guitarist is Paul Quarrington, whose “best known” status as the author of Whale Music, the book and the screenplay, was usurped by becoming the winner of this year’s Canada Reads contest on CBC radio. His 1987 novel King Leary was nominated and defended for the win by Dave Bidini. (Quarrington has since pledged to buy Bidini beer for life.)
