Jane’s Walk: Where the water was

Departing from the water fountain in the north Common, this Jane’s Walk (a citizen-led neighbourhood tour in honour of walkable cities advocate Jane Jacobs) traces lost waterways in Halifax, with walk organizers asking: “Did you know that the Halifax Commons used to be a swamp? Or that a babbling brook used to run through the middle of the South End? Most of the peninsula’s wetlands and waterways of are lost or buried, but their legacy remains in the city’s spongy soils and flooded basements.” more deets

Ford Doolittle recently visited the Biosphere 2, an enclosure in Arizona which set out in the early ’90s to prove it’s possible for plants to completely self-sustain in a three-acre enclosure. Here, at ViewPoint Gallery, the results are shared—but believe they aren’t just any collection of vacation snaps: “Now the site of research and a tourist destination, [the] 20,000 square foot rain forest biome looks very much like it is trying to escape from the enclosing glass, unaware that it would soon perish in the surrounding Sonoran Desert,” Doolittle’s artist’s statement says. “I took many pictures of leaves desperately plastered against the windows and will show some of them.” more deets
