No one really pauses to talk things out in the latest Jason Statham beat-em-up flick, Safe. Statham plays an ex-cop/ex-cage fighter/ex-special forces operative who vows to keep a Chinese girl safe (get it?) so she can use the combination in her head to open a safe (get it?). The Chinese mob used the girl’s photographic memory to store secrets, and now every wonderfully brazen gangster in New York is after her. Statham also has to deal with a city of corrupt cops, and his revenge-fuelled former unit. If that sounds like a lot to set up, it is. Safe offers a bold amount of flashbacks and origins to establish Statham’s character and young “Mei,” when really “wanted girl” and “virtuous badass” would have been sufficient. Worse, once its leads are together the movie doesn’t really seem to know what to do with itself. More a trailer than a film, but there’s still lots of broken bones and loud gunshots.
