LCD Soundsystem might as well be called canned music, and frontperson James Murphy a business man. Blurring the divide between art and economics, Murphy will tell you he’s very much affected by popular culture and by what is “cool” —he simply wants to provide a service. Thus, even on Sound of Silver, which has more rock influence than his first LP, the near expressive tracks like “North American Scum” and “New York I Love You” are still full of restraint and mannered delivery. Like all important statements, they come from the loins. In trying to replicate these with his head, Murphy looks afraid to take the artistic plunge.
