Painter Peter Hill, in his latest exhibition titled Reconnaissance, uses a blend of oils, acrylics, wax and other texture-building materials to bring life to his intriguing circular creations. At first glance, the pieces appear to be planets. If you lean in for a closer look, you can get lost in the texture and detail of Hill’s work. “It’s something that represents what I would call a world,” explains Hill. “It’s a contained environment you could live in and discover things – a metaphor for living.” While working on this kind of painting, Hill takes close-up photos of detail found in his work-in-progress, searching for what he calls “events”. These photographs later become landscapes of his newly created worlds, representing anything from a chain of mountains to a pool of water.
