An Anablog operative was reading a recent issue of Found magazine — the one “dedicated solely to printing ‘found’ items, e.g., hilarious teenage break-up letters, fucked-up grocery lists, awkward rejection notices,” she clarifies — and noticed some Halifax content.
One story is an interview with local MC and producer Classified (fun fact: he went to our high school), in which he recounts a lovely story about going into Frenchy’s and coming out with a pair of $10 turntables — how his career began with a “find,” get it? — which he still uses to make records for himself and others, over a decade later. (Now that is the Nova Scotian way.)
The other is a random paper bag scribble found by local resident Brock Hanson. It says:
I just walked past a church. On the marquee pronounced in EXTRA lg. letters CHRIST LOVES EVEN YOU. I just thought you should know that. It was the EVEN that hit me square in the funny bone.
If only they had a decent employment section
The Daily News’ dizzying descent into irrelevance got a big kick in the back this week when eight staffers were heaved out the door. Among them were two of the paper’s most popular writers, a top editor and its best photographer. They are reporters Cathy Nicoll, who has been with the DN for 26 years; our esteemed colleague Sandy MacDonald, a much admired and respected voice in the arts; story editor and former columnist David Swick; and photographer Darrell Oake.
Word is that the Daily News — owned by Transcontinental, the whale of a media company that ate all the local plankton in the province — made the staff cuts as part of plans to refocus on its weekly publications (you know, those ad-packed things you don’t read about real estate and trucks and stuff), a misguided use of focus if we ever heard one. Now bands are getting interview requests from dudes in the sales department, further blurring an already fuzzy Daily line between editorial and advertising. We didn’t believe the internet when it told us the daily newspaper was dying, but today it doesn’t seem so far off.
