OK so Paul McCartney is the latest LCD name being bandied about by the city as a potential Concert on the Common. (Note: Fucking MADONNA has a new record out!) We care not, but fine. He’s a Beatle. It’s a big deal. But do we have to extend a bunch of official invitations (looking at you, Tattoo) and go on the news talking about how our recreational sports will be affected (give yourself a shake, ultimate frisbee person) as a way to “sway” Macca into helicoptering into Halifax for two hours in July?
Why can’t people understand that top 10 lists from elected officials, heartfelt pleas and internet petitions will never, EVER get a band (or Letterman) here? Big-time events depend on two things: schedule and money. Schedule is the reason Celine Dion dropped out. (The REAL reason. And seriously, Events Halifax, why did you just bend over for that bullshit?) Money is the reason they can only do one of these a year. If McCartney’s fee is met and he’s got a day off plus traveling time, he’ll come. If not, he won’t. Just calm down until the deal is reached. (Or not. And then don’t whine about it.)
In the meantime, there is certainly no harm in resurrecting your office betting pool for the support acts. We’re guessing Jonas Brothers, Hedley and perennial rumour Tom Petty. —Tara Thorne
