An extremely interesting comment and one for which hormonal evidence is supported by philosophical reflection. I believe that the key is to be found in the poster’s pseudonym itself, “Still serving a purpose.” What is that key?
Of course, the poster’s assertion can be construed in the narrow sense that it is estrogen alone which is still serving a purpose as a verbal filter but I think that the poster intends to cast a broader net, i.e. that fertile females, herself included, are serving the purpose which nature intended. The fact that fertile females bear children endows them with a purpose far in excess of providing a check on their daily speech habits. Not only does it provide for the continuation of the species but, in a feed-back loop, serves to temper those speech habits themselves. How does it do this?
In order to engage in reproductive activity the fertile female must attract the male. This can be done at the physical level through enhancing her body image, not an insignificant aspect of sexual intercourse to be sure, but equally importantly, it can be facilitated by smoothing the tone of those exchanges involved in social intercourse. Who among men can resist the seductive tones of the aroused female? For many men, perhaps most, such seductive tones trump body image every time. It is in that sense that estrogen works its magic as that more profound verbal filter that all women require.
