I just looked at a rental on Quinpool Road. This was a one bedroom for $975! Not only did it have a horrible bathroom, but a horrible kitchen with the only counter being about 5 feet which included a sink. It had no cupboard space and was pretty small for a one bedroom. It did have a nice deck and is in a nice area obviously. Quinpool is pretty much the nicest area in Halifax, and that being said I do understand that you pay for the area you are going to live in. The problem is, for a place like this in a normal area, the cost would be around $550 or $600. So we are paying prices that people in Toronto would pay to rent a crappy apartment. This is not Toronto, and we have higher taxes, higher income taxes, higher food prices and lower wages. Why would anyone stay in this city? —Seriously?

I live in Clayton Park, in a nice area from what I understood but over the last couple of years, we’ve had a couple of stabbings within 500m from where I live and countless robberies. This was not the case 3-5 years ago.
We all thought Bedford was nice. I work in Bedford. You should see the characters we run into. Let’s not talk about downtown Halifax or Dartmouth.
But there will always be nice people and nice neighbours. It’s just a matter or finding them and getting to know them.
As for why not leave, you pretty much answered that with the last part of your post.
The price we pay for goods and services makes it hard to save and leave.
Not to mention, if you leave, then you see how much the grass is greener on the other side and won’t come back. Then they’d have no one to live here that they can make money from.
So they don’t make it easy. My theory on it anyway.

It’s all about locationl location location. Quinpool is central to pretty much everything, thats how they justify the cost. Duh. I’d hate to see what a 500-600 place looks like no matter where it is.
Jesus H. Christmas! Are you new to the whole rental/real estate world? 3 simple words dictate housing prices and this is true the WORLD OVER: location, location, location. If you pick an apartment close to the downtown core with all it’s amenities, you’re going to pay for it, plain and simple. It’s been this way since someone first discovered that you could rent out a home for money. It’s common fucking dog, OB, or at least, it should be. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Halifax, Toronto or East Bumblefuck. Supply and demand. Furthermore, I’d put money on the fact that if you took this same apartment and dropped it at the corner of Queen and Yonge in the G.T.A., you’d be paying a far fucking cry more than $975/month.
I agree with HaliMike. Quinpool is definately NOT the nicest part of Halifax and I second his recommendation for a self inflicted vigorous jostling of your cranium.
Secondly, if you took said cranium out of your ass long enough to look around, you’ll notice that Halifax is composed of a SHIT TON of apartments, condos and other assorted rentals. If you resigned yourself to living in a neigborhood that is a little less central, you’d have no problem finding a nicely appointed unit at a much more reasonable price. There are more apartments in this city in far nicer neighborhoods than this one over priced hovel you described.

Is heat and hot water included? If so that’s not so bad.. You’re not going to a get a really nice place downtown without paying for it. You have to choose between location and comfort, although there are some pretty affordable places downtown that aren’t too bad, check out Hollis and Queen.
You should ask if there’s a Gated Community close by with a nice law abiding guy called Zimmerman doing the rounds…….

FYI, Quinpool is great if you like crappy restaurants, otherwise not so much. Look North for moderate pricing. Ignore incoherent warnings of violence and danger. Or, if you’re really cheap, look North – in Dartmouth.

that’s why i only pay 600 bucks a month for my place in fairview. it is one of the quietest buildings around here. and i make fucking sure that it stays that way. i have a good sized 2 bed room, and heat all year round, if i want or need it. the floors all have keyed security doors, and no fucking riff raff fucks around here. sure the cops and whatever goes by here every so often, but they usually don’t come here. if you live here, and have cops showing up, then you go, that simple.
You might find an apartment in Mount Uniacke for $550.00-$600.00 a month. Plus utilities.
