I lived in Japan last year and did my fair share of mailing various items from what is supposedly one of the most expensive countries in the world. A 200g package cost about $12 Canadian to ship Osaka–>Halifax, Express, by post office. I went to ship an item in the opposite direction for the first time yesterday. Halifax–>Osaka. Tried FedEx first. $96 for 4 days. Ok, it’s FedEx, and 4 days isn’t that quick. So, thought I’d try Canada Post. $68 for 4-7 days Express!! SIXTY EIGHT DOLLARS!!! How do they come up with a rate that is 5 1/2 times what it costs to ship the other way around? I could fly myself, 2 large suitcases, and a carry on for the cost of a dozen of these small packages—and get there in 16 hours! Who the hell is running Canada Post and how can they be so inefficient that they end up with rates like this??? —R.J.

  1. I’m sure it has something to do with how their run their system in Japan versus here. They seem to be more efficient with pretty much everything than we are here. They may not pay their employees as much or give them as many benefits or something. I’m too lazy to check these facts but I’m sure the resident fact-checker will be on it soon ;D.

  2. Because everyone in the western world “needs” stainless steel appliances, a 3500 sq foot home, a Lexus and a gas guzzling SUV as a second vehicle. All that shit costs paper yo!!!

  3. I lived in Japan for a year too. It was really cool being able to buy Canadian Club Rye over there for $12 a bottle while we pay $30 here. (true story)

  4. when i did my stint in the navy, we had a chance to visit japan, nice place, but i certainly would want to live there, ever. thanks for the memories tho. those people are the models that the klingons were patterned off of.

  5. I agree – the prices for International express mail is retarded. These money grabbers at Canada Post should chill the fuck out on the prices. Also their dumbass workers should get minimum wage – Like how hard is it to weigh a package and stick a stamp on?

  6. Mel brings up a good point about wages. I’d bet that our postal workers make a lot more than those in Japan.

On a completely unrelated note, who wants to come watch Family Matters with me? I got the whole series! Bring something to drink

  7. 200 grams eh?
    consistently 200 grams…
I WONDER what this ‘package’ could be…
weighed out perfectly and always 200 grams…
    it is fluffy? no seeds/stems/sticks?
    skunky?

  8. Actually, there has been a big fuss in Japan over attempts to privatize the mail system, as theirs is very heavily subsidized by tax money (way more than ours I believe) As to why the price for international air mail is so much cheaper, its probably mostly the subsidies. When you think about it, outgoing mail for an island nation would be an obvious place to put subsidies if you are trying to keep exports moving at a competitive price.

  9. Canada Post really is famously bad, I’m sorry…it takes ages to for first class mail to travel, there is no home pick up, and no Saturday delivery. Packages I’ve sent up north have been damaged, opened, and stolen from.

  10. that’s just because the delivery beaver’s teeth are sharp from having to make a respectable home…
just wait until his property tax assessment goes up because of that extra wing he added to his dam. He’ll get his…
