Hey Mr. Mayor – we need our buses

I’ve been reading all these comments by all these dumbasses on other news sites who are all “FUCKING LAZY ASSES OMG THEY HAVE NO REASON TO STRIKE! I’LL DO THEIR JOB FOR WHAT THEY’RE GETTING PAID WITHOUT A DAMN UNION!”

Do these people even know WHY they’re striking?

It’s not because of wages or any of that stuff (but have you ever wondered WHY they’re making what they are? yup, the union! so if you were willing to do that job sans union, you’d likely be making a lot less). They’re striking because HRM wants to privatize some services, which would end with some members being out on their asses. Do you think that these private companies are going to keep things the same for these workers? No. Their wages will drop, they’ll bring in part timers and those with stable full time jobs would be FUCKED. The drivers are only one part of the ATU membership, and when you’re in a union it’s all or nothing as far as your local’s membership. It’s always about solidarity.

And they’re standing up for their own job security as well (drivers, that is) — because once HRM erodes away at one part of the membership, it’ll start chipping at the rest. And then you have a whole bunch of drivers with no job security. Don’t even tell me people wouldn’t fight for their jobs and be pissed off if their job was being threatened — unionized or not. How would YOU whiners who are whining about the ‘greedy bus drivers’ feel if your boss came in one day and said ‘yeah, we’re cutting you down to part time, which means no more benefits and oh yeah, we’re cutting your hourly wage in half”? You’d be just THRILLED with that, I know.

PS: you can thank unions for many, if not most of the workers rights ALL of us (unionized, non unionized alike) enjoy in the work force. Anyone wanna go back to 7 day a week 15 hour a day jobs?

A major problem with unions is that it does protect shitty employees, BUT I think their impact on the work force itself and the positive impact on the workplace far out weighs the costs.

HAHAHA all these people whining about the bus being an “essential service” make me laugh my ass off.

Who’s ‘most of us’ HK?

Are you talking about other drivers or are you talking about general workers?

Because I’d sure like to see stats on the latter. Considering the median family income in NS is $62k, I highly doubt most working people in NS are making min wage.

I thought median was more legit than mean. It means that at least half is or is above $62k, which would mean HK’s assertion that “most make min wage” would be incorrect.

And if ‘most’ in the half below $62k were making min wage, wouldn’t the median be lower overall?

In any event, the median for single parents is around $31k/yr, and wouldn’t the same logic apply?

The traffic was fantastic coming in from Clayton Park.

It’s the arteries coming into the city that are awful. We just breezed right through and traffic was actually lighter than usual for us. I got to work within a half hour and that’s with making a detour to drop my friend off at the metro centre.

Which bridge? The old bridge wasn’t actually quite delightful this morning.

Downtown was like a ghost town when I drove through. It’s the arteries coming in that sucked. Thank goodness for not living outside the city core! <3
