correct me if I’m wrong here…
is that Libel?
and if so…
If I slap him with a fish so he IS in fact smelly…
is it still libel?
well smelly, sure as death and taxes, he will get another term, bet on it. this city has no brains and will keep him there til he dies of old age. no new ideas or life for us. kelly best before date has long since expired and as such, should be forced out after x terms.
i foresee a shadow in the future of this town, and it isn’t good at all. his terms will be history making and he will continue to gloat and blunder thru this one too. as for the buses, he has very little to do with them.
Shush, OP! If Hizzoner Tapeworm feels that he has no chance of being re-elected, then he has no incentive to miraculously solve this non-issue at the last minute.
BTW , if the are “our” busses does that mean that “we” can tell the union slugs to pull their fingers out and do their goddamned jobs? No? Thought not.
And, I think that Dawn of the Zed has a very good idea about how the next election should go…

The longer I live the more I’m sure Canadians need term limits on elected officials. 2 terms in office & then you can’t hold it again.
Back to the real world (you know the one where they fire your ass for fraudulent use of funds, incompetence, & general stupidity when you are caught!)
what we need is a subway or go trains so we don’t rely so heavily on the bus system in this damn town. They are a monopoly and this town needs other means of transportation.
News bulletin just came on my news feed:
Breaking: Metro Transit talks over: Strike preparations begin.
We could never have a subway in halifax. Too many rocks.
Robyn, even if we had a subway or go train system they would HAVE to be members of this same union; so they would be on strike aswell.
The strike was just announced. As of 12:01 Feb 2, no busses will be moving. Even Kelly (or his alter ego “Stuttering Pete”) couldn’t stop the force that is the MT union. They were going to strike no matter what anyway, they just postponed it until after Christmas with a little 1 month buffer to catch up on bills and whatnot. I hope you choke on your union contracts, fuckwads!!!
I hope the over paid assfucks who couldn’t negotiate a deal with Metro Transit, choke on their not deserved over compensated paychecks.
Now the drivers have to strike , they have no other choice.
Time to fire some bureaucrats IMO…not drivers !
The losers here are the public & the transit drivers…the negotiators for the HRM, will continue to collect their paychecks…should be a law in place that when a strike happens EVERYONE loses their pay on all sides until the strike is over.
At least tax payers would see some serious money building up in our accounts if we didn’t have to pay the bureaucrats their blood money.
A lot of people are going to be screwed over this. The fucking city is going to cause many to lose hours on the paychecks or cost people jobs due to to this! Fuck you to to idiots who are screwing transit users over. Most can’t afford a car or to take cabs back and forth to work or school. Living bills costs enough as is.
You guys are right…the same union would plaque any other means of transportation we could bring in. There is something really wrong with that.
http://verydemotivational.files.wordpress.…
anyone have an impromptu, local shuttle business they’ve been meaning to start up?
Now would be the time…
as much of an inconvenience the strike is…. and how much i hate unions in general…… i think they have a legit reason this time….. they arnt asking for 30% pay raises or 90% pensions.
they just want the city to renew the last contract and also limit “part time” employees……….. which is how many big business manage to fuck over the average worker, by limiting benefits and removing job security….. its not like the part timers dont work full time hours…. its just the city’s way of cutting the balls off the unions ability to negotiate decent wages in the future.
the city is basically saying fuck you… take it or leave it….
Supposedly they’ve come to an agreement on that… http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/…
I’ll look at this as an opportunity instead. I’ll be in great shape for this summer with the extra 3+ hours I’ll be walking every day. Thanks for my new beachbody ATU508! Cunts…
Dawn, this was done back in 1998 by a company in Harrietsfield (White’s Transit). ATU Local 508 pretty much shut them down until they became unionized (forced), now that they were unionized they had to support their unionized brothers and cease to provide “interim” bus service…there were more “ins-and-outs” of the deal than that but that quickly sums up part of their deal.
ok then…
Who the hell would ever guess there’s a need for a black market bus service?!?!
I wonder if they have any stats on automobile thefts and the potential for them to increase during transit strikes…
“Over 80 per cent of ATU members are divorced… “
probably infidelity issues… since drivers get all the chicks.
Just a question More, do the union reps and bigwigs go on strike pay in solidarity with their union brothers, or are they riding the gravy train with bisquit wheels while their members suffer? You know, kinds like the bureaucrats?
it will be tough to get a car share, or cab or rental. hopefully, at the least, we will see some car pooling. even though the last strike was in july, i did see some good samaritans http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C2o9JqKAY5c/ThlX…

I’ve been reading all these comments by all these dumbasses on other news sites who are all “FUCKING LAZY ASSES OMG THEY HAVE NO REASON TO STRIKE! I’LL DO THEIR JOB FOR WHAT THEY’RE GETTING PAID WITHOUT A DAMN UNION!”
Do these people even know WHY they’re striking?
It’s not because of wages or any of that stuff (but have you ever wondered WHY they’re making what they are? yup, the union! so if you were willing to do that job sans union, you’d likely be making a lot less). They’re striking because HRM wants to privatize some services, which would end with some members being out on their asses. Do you think that these private companies are going to keep things the same for these workers? No. Their wages will drop, they’ll bring in part timers and those with stable full time jobs would be FUCKED. The drivers are only one part of the ATU membership, and when you’re in a union it’s all or nothing as far as your local’s membership. It’s always about solidarity.
And they’re standing up for their own job security as well (drivers, that is) — because once HRM erodes away at one part of the membership, it’ll start chipping at the rest. And then you have a whole bunch of drivers with no job security. Don’t even tell me people wouldn’t fight for their jobs and be pissed off if their job was being threatened — unionized or not. How would YOU whiners who are whining about the ‘greedy bus drivers’ feel if your boss came in one day and said ‘yeah, we’re cutting you down to part time, which means no more benefits and oh yeah, we’re cutting your hourly wage in half”? You’d be just THRILLED with that, I know.
PS: you can thank unions for many, if not most of the workers rights ALL of us (unionized, non unionized alike) enjoy in the work force. Anyone wanna go back to 7 day a week 15 hour a day jobs?
Didn’t think so.
A major problem with unions is that it does protect shitty employees, BUT I think their impact on the work force itself and the positive impact on the workplace far out weighs the costs.
Do I know why they are striking PK?
Why yes I do. Straight from the horses mouth, now the big issue is that drivers don’t get to pick their shifts.
“(Ken Wilson) said workers now have flexibility in picking shifts, based on seniority. But he said Metro Transit wants to set more rigid work schedules.
“Over 80 per cent of ATU members are divorced. So the last thing we’re going to do is give up something that affects our quality of life,” he said.”
Thank goodness someone is looking out for the poor divorced bus drivers, and that the other 96,00 people can go fuck themselves. Yeah, good old public sector unions… These aren’t your fathers union, gotta tell ya
i specifically go to news sites, just to see the feedback. most people are okay but some say really stupid things. the cnn comments re: the murder trial in kingston, “that oldest one was hot, i woulda done her”. anyway, public sector unions will be an ongoing issue and what is considered an essential service
BRILLIANT… if someone had the forethought…
book car share for days on end…
provide under-the-table cab service…
profit!!!
Why? All anyone ever does is whine about them on here?
Anytime a union protects someone who can’t do a job correctly/honetly or doesn’t deserve it, then they’re wrong!
HAHAHA all these people whining about the bus being an “essential service” make me laugh my ass off.
Idiots.
I dunno man, if there’s one thing I remember about a lot of Halifax it was no parking, especially downtown. No wonder Barrington Street area is dying, there’s nowhere to park. HRM needs buses, just not at these terms and for these reasons.
Actually PK, the part time employees and the contracting out issues have been conceded by the employer. The major point of contention now is rostering, which enables the senior members to pick their shifts quarterly and the ability of said members to pick substitution days, which seems to be a “quality of life” issue.
The point of collective bargaining is to at least stay the same in the game, not have to give up things you already worked to negotiate. But what do I know — I only have certification in collective bargaining and industrial relations.
Off topic: hay zed — wanna be my bus buddy tonight? I’ll be on the 21 🙂
Can you imagine how much it would cost to dig a subway through 100 million tonnes of pyritic slate? Let’s get an “el” like Chigargo. Yes, intentionally mis-spelt.
same with buried power lines cranky. it’s the canadian shield people
It’s only an essential service for those of us too stupid, poor or lazy to take Sebastian’s advice to buy a car or get a decent job.
ooo kamala, you give away too much^^
Hub-Unit’s dimwitted, overpaid boss said to him today: ‘Oh, I don’t think the transit strike will affect many people.’ to which HU shot back: ‘Only 96,000 passengers a day.’ Insert boss’ head in wood chipper.
I say let some of the transportation system privatize. We have labor laws to protect people from poor workplace practices. I don’t support this strike at all. Times are getting tough and paying drivers 24 bucks an hour out of our taxes is a little over the top!
Kamala, my friend. I vill join you in that beer*snap* glug*. Are you perchance related to Abdullah the Butcher

LOL – “de-natured boy” What on earth were they trying to imply there?
Great, now instead of a lack of “bus bitches”, we’re going to have “a lack of bus” bitches.
Lolz troon
All issues besides the scheduling have been resolved. The city wants to change the scheduling to reduce overtime, which costs MT a lot of money, and guess what…subsequently costs the taxpayers a lot of money,
Yup, a bunch of drivers that know how to work the system to maximize their paycheques won’t be able to do that anymore. The union rep said it’s not about money, apparently it’s about the semantics surrounding money. Typical union lies and bullshit. They are also asking for raises to the tune of 3% per year over the next 3 years (that’s more than a 10% raise over 3 years after compounding raise on top of raise), they were offered 1.8%, anther point of contention. Seems to me to be all about money, even after the union propaganda of “we would never strike over money”. What’s that again Ken? I say the city offer them everything they want with no increase in wages, then we’ll see if it’s about money.
I don’t even fucking know anymore.
The onion peels, er, union peeps, said it is about “quality of life” ….. lord thundering geezuz, yer a buz driver! What “quality” can there possibly be in your life?
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/…
as someone who just bought bus tickets (since I needed to get to and from for today…)
since a pass would be insane to buy the day before a strike….
if they don’t strike, I’m now gonna be pissed.
Ideally, they will be on strike for 2 weeks… and then I have enough passes to get by until March.
oh, and PK, I leave earlier than that… otherwise, ya, would have seen ya.
Does it really effect 96000 people ?
or is it more like 48,000 you know trip over counts as 1…trip back counts as 2…but its just 1 person going back & forth.
Just an observation. cause i really don’t know.
Would you have TALKED to me?
lolz.
I haven’t been keeping up on what the issues are on either side, so I’m not qualified to comment on any of that. I just know that a hell of a lot of people depend on Metro Transit to get around for a multitude of reasons and it sucks that this is happening. So, for all of y’all that depend on it … I sure hope if they don’t come to agreement to prevent the strike from happening, that it’s resolved quickly. A good negotiation generally requires compromise on both sides … hopefully both sides don’t lose sight of that.
maybe…. 🙂
STRIKE! STRIKE! STRIKE!
Sorry OP, in this messy bus situation I blame the union just as much. They are the highest paid drivers in the maritimes- as quoted on CTV last night, whereas most of us make min.wage. Sure they deal with a lot, but who the hell doesn’t at their job…and again most of us get paid min.wage, plus deal with hour slashbacks this time of year. They speak of job security, which really and truly doesn’t exist anymore(especially during a recession) and while they picket for better wages, and not being able to be contracted, what happens to the job security of the 90,000 people who rely on buses for a ride to and from work everyday? Also, most of us min.wage workers have dealt with the switching of companies, new policies, ect., but unlike the union we do not have the option to strike, or the choice. On the news last night, one guy mentioned quality of life and said bus drivers have a high divorce rate…wtf?? How the hell is that relevant?? They aren’t truck drivers, and they don’t do overnights like cabs do so the divorce rate shouldn’t have anything to do with the line of work they do. Is it thw 12 hr shifts??Lots of people work those too and for a hell of a lot less I might add. The mayor seems to be on his way out, and after catching the news last night, seems to be they are using the city as a scapegoat to meet their own demands.
Who’s ‘most of us’ HK?
Are you talking about other drivers or are you talking about general workers?
Because I’d sure like to see stats on the latter. Considering the median family income in NS is $62k, I highly doubt most working people in NS are making min wage.
well, with some Nova Scotian’s able to spend 7.5 million on a fucking house in florida…
the numbers can sway pretty heavily.
I mean, the poor can’t ‘make’ less than 0… but there’s really no feasible upper limit.
and remember, median is a shit stat…
if there were 3 people in NS and one was jobless and made nothing, one was a student making 7k a year, and one was that fucking house guy with… whatever… 32 million dollars a year, say…
the median is still only 7k….
with the actual mean (average) being over 10 and a half million bucks.
I thought median was more legit than mean. It means that at least half is or is above $62k, which would mean HK’s assertion that “most make min wage” would be incorrect.
And if ‘most’ in the half below $62k were making min wage, wouldn’t the median be lower overall?
In any event, the median for single parents is around $31k/yr, and wouldn’t the same logic apply?
I was talking the general public PK, and whereas, according to your stats most make above min.wage, the 90,000 people that take the bus everyday evidently shows that most people in the workforce either don’t make enough to afford a car, or at least drive it everywhere with the rising cost of gas, and being the city is made up of malls and a large variety of shops I am going to guess that most people make the stabdard min.wage and if they do make above, it’s most of the time not by much. Especially these days where companies are cutting corners to save.
“And if ‘most’ in the half below $62k were making min wage, wouldn’t the median be lower overall? “
nope. it could be the following:
50 000 people make nothing…
one person makes 62K and the remaining 50 000 people make 100 000 000 000 each and the median is still 62K.
even if you give the lower 50 000 people min wage salary… or even 61K… the median still stays the same.
that’s why it’s shit.
Apparently they haven’t given up yet …
http://www.metronews.ca/halifax/local/arti…
Ahhh … mean/median/mode … first year stats, first lecture.
My Ex took the wbus 2 & from work.
She made over 60 a year.
It stopped literally 25 ft from our driveway. took her to the bridge , she took #1 to halisux & work.
It ain’t just poor folk takin’ the bus !
DAMN IT…
STRIKE, YOU BASTARDS!
talks have broken off, they have till midnight. sorry folks, it looks like it’s all over, except for the crying
“evidently shows that most people in the workforce either don’t make enough to afford a car, or at least drive it everywhere with the rising cost of gas”
WUH WUUUUUUUHHHHH
Nope.
There are lots of other reasons to take the bus. Mostly having to do with handsome gingers though.
FFS … just on the news and they can’t even agree if they’re still talking.
drivers or passengers or both? you wrowdy wrouge
Strike is in full effect. 🙁
not much effect from what I’ve seen…
a few SOL people here and there but traffic wasn’t all THAT bad.
This is Provincial Hitch Hiker Month anyways, isn’t it?
pick random people up… just be sure to keep a gun under your seat.
The traffic was fantastic coming in from Clayton Park.
It’s the arteries coming into the city that are awful. We just breezed right through and traffic was actually lighter than usual for us. I got to work within a half hour and that’s with making a detour to drop my friend off at the metro centre.
I was 45 minutes EARLY for work! w0000
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oUA6wirNfE
Interesting. Apparently there was quite a bit of traffic on the bridge this morning.
Jeremy Clarkson weighs in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=de1L2KLdFcw
Which bridge? The old bridge wasn’t actually quite delightful this morning.
Downtown was like a ghost town when I drove through. It’s the arteries coming in that sucked. Thank goodness for not living outside the city core! <3

I had a long walk to work this morning, about 100 minutes… but it wasn’t really all that bad. I’m actually NOT dependant on transit after all… Sure it’s convenient, and it will suck walking on really stormy days – but maybe those will be the cab days from now on… I’m still feeling the burn (lol) from my walk in and it feels kind of good! I’m going to look at this as an opportunity and an adventure!
If my 96 year old grandfather can get a new knee and is up and rolling again – I can walk back and forth to work 😉 It’s all good after all! Fuck the bus!
did you have any trouble getting to the gulag, commander?
No – the kindness of a co-worker kept me from a couple of less appealing options. The worst of it is, it would only be about a 40 minute walk as the proverbial crow flies. Not for the first time in my life, I curse the fact that I was not born a corbie.
http://images.cheezburger.com/completestor…
I’m working from home for the time being, but part of me wishes I was still in bed. 🙁
did everyone make it to work, anybody else working from home?
…apparently there are some folks waiting at bus stops for a bus that’s not coming
That’s a pretty good metaphor for life itself, Painey. Guess I’ll be listening to The Cure and self-cutting for the next little while >; )
I saw three people waiting alone at three different bus stops.
I don’t know how they got their heads so far up their butts, but damn.
✔ thumbing for a ride, at a bus stop makes sense
Hay Kitty – has our friend who doesn’t pay taxes actually been banned. >: (
working from home is a pretty sweet gig..
saves on time, effort, money (on food and transport)…
I think I’m gonna like it.
were these people smoking? in the smoke-shelters?
what are you wearing?
Yes. Yes he has.
And all the accounts he’s attempted to create afterward have been too.
I think Bird did a sweep. Mo Man and Sebastard haven’t been around lately so….
Friend who doesn’t pay taxes?? I think I missed something
Is working from home an option just for the strike or an actual anytime option, zed?
I have noticed it’s been a little less dick-knuckley here lately…
it may be his IP blocked if he’s constantly trying with different accounts from the same computer.
I’m definitely not advocating spoofing it though.
Honesty is the best policy….

Darling, Peter has no control over the buses and the strike. Please be more informed the next time.
What happened to the Reality Bites infotorial “what’s driving the transit strike?”. You couldn’t delete it from the hardcopy, so I still have a reference: Point #3, Scheduling, is actually the only reason they are on strike now. 96,0000 people are being used as bargaining chips so that employees with seniority can determine their schedules. There’s quite a good explanation of it and it’s consequences in the Chronicle Herald. HRM from what I understand conceded to everything except this one point. I wonder, if the “Top 3” reasons printed in The Coast are part of union literature given to the guys/girls before the vote. If it is, and these are why they voted the way they did, I bet a lot of them feel pretty fucking stupid right now. They’re losing pay and looking like assholes because they want their seniors to be allowed to keep fucking the new guys in the ass. Nice.
I thought wheelie’s account was new…
last I checked.
From CH: “The drivers now choose their own shifts and routes, by day, in three-month blocks, based on seniority. Metro Transit wants to move toward what Robar calls “the industry standard,” in which shifts are picked by fixed week, rather than by day, and management would have some control over which shifts and routes a driver could select.
Robar said he’s willing to negotiate the effects of that new system, but as a whole it’s non-negotiable.
“We’re going ahead with a package that includes (scheduling changes),” he said. “How that looks and how it’s managed through the workforce is something we’re willing to talk about.”
Robar said the current system of picking shifts and routes by days rather than by weeks leaves some shifts unattended. And that means drivers may have to be called in and paid overtime.”
Of course, The Coast can just say that’s all a lie. No harm done.
I’m here, Bitches. 🙂
I felt it was time to wipe my slate clean, as it were etc. I deleted old wheelie.
Everything is cool, I wasn’t Modded for being a bad boy.
It feels kind of better in here without the constant troll/counter troll.
How was everyone’s day?
