When did musicians forget about the live show? You may not have the best vocals, or hell, even be able to play more than 3 chords on the guitar but at least be entertaining…
If you’re not the best musician become an entertainer and entertain me. Some obscure Tmblr visual on a poster board and a link to your website, Twitter or Facebook fan page is not enough to make me become a life long fan. Talk to the audience, get some stage presence… ugh. —Le Sigh

Could’t agree more… Valid bitch.
Also, if you are an amazing group creating the most incredible soundscape, at a live show, I want to see you put emotion into the performance, not sitting on a amp…
OMG, I just wrote a response to yet another whining musician’s facebook rant about bars not paying enough, and mentioned that if you’re not a “pro” willing to improve your ENTERTAINMENT VALUE, then *that* may have something to do with why you get paid crap.
Having been a professional performer for over 20 years, I can tell you that 90% of your audience at the average club is paying ZERO attention unless you do something to GRAB their attention. Too much dead air, not inviting the crowd into your world, and playing what you like instead of what your audience is into is part of what’s killing live music in this city and many others.
That and “performers” who don’t get that emotion is the difference between an OK show and a great one. (And FYI – laughing at yourself when you &$^% up onstage will get the crowd on your side way faster than just about anything.)
OMG, I’m tired of justifying why musicians should be paid a fair wage, and how bar owners need to be educated about the value of supporting local musicians/artists and so on.
The business has been in decline for a long time. Musicians “not trying hard enough” has nothing to do with it.

I have to disagree to a certain extent, Wp. If you own a bar and you’re trying to save money, and you have the choice of a $500 band or a $50 duo, which would you pick to maximize profit? (Assuming you have no idea how either one sounds).
And if either of those options sucks ass and drives people out of the bar, you’d make the assumption that all live music isn’t worth spending money on, OR you’d go with the $50 duo.
The business is in decline for many reasons. The price of beer is a major one. Cover is not an issue but paying $5+ a drink makes is a hard sell to go out and check out new bands… UNLESS the acts have an amazing live act that engages the audience…
I also dislike how late shows go… most times the starting act is on at 11… why so late… so people can get their pre buzz on to avoid paying high costs for drinks…
ranting without direction…
I go see live acts whenever I’m not playing – I might learn something! More often than not, I get to learn (again) what NOT to do because I see acts who:
– don’t engage the audience
– haves 5 minutes of dead air between songs
– take twice as long on breaks as they do onstage
– play music that’s clearly all about showing the world how awesomely talented they are (aka warbling in 3 octaves or wanking guitar solos) instead of stuff the audience would like to hear
– treat the bar staff like shit (aka yelling over the mike “can I get a drink right now”)
– refuse to even speak to people in the establishment who aren’t there with the musician
– walk out on bar tab because they”don’t get paid enough”
– play the same songs they’ve played at the same venues for the last year without learning a single new tune
– play nothing but slow sappy three-chord ballads
I could go on. But I won’t. I think you get the gist.
Lazy performers make for annoyed audiences. Annoyed audiences don’t go to see local live acts, which means bars think live acts don’t make money, which means bars don’t book live acts in an attempt to SAVE money.
Which means more competition for live acts with less venues to play. Which means the best available (who want more money for their experience) have a harder time booking because bar owners want to book acts who cost less money. Which means we get more of the acts that fit into the list of things mentioned above. GAK!
Late start times and greedy bar owners who charge a cover AND jack up drink prices for live shows certainly contribute to the decline.
I’m sorry if I’m ranting, but the “woe is me I don’t get paid enough for my art” argument smacks of entitlement, and almost ALWAYS comes from musicians who aren’t good enough to whine about it anyway.
There’s a lot wrong with the “system”, but the only way it will change is if people work together to make it better. And sadly, most people would rather bitch about it than fix it.
I dislike that I have worked around the world as a musician for 20+ years, and get paid less now than when I only had 2-3 years experience, but such is the market we live in right now. And we musicians (using the term loosely in some cases) have helped to create this environment.
However, I don’t believe in crying over something that’s not an issue for me (I have merchandise, and CDs, and deals with bar owners that make it worth my while, as well as a pretty regular rotation of places I play), and I have worked hard to get to that point.
Of course I’d like a raise, but like some unions about to strike, I have nothing to bargain with if someone is willing to do my job for free – even if I know they can’t do it as well as I can. 🙂
I get the gist. I see these bar-lowering acts all the time, who accept lower wages for a night’s work, but don’t mind because (they reason) “it’s good experience” or they were given some beer too.
I’ve grown tired of having venue bookers look at me like I’m crazy for asking for reasonable $. There’s always some hack who will play for less. It’s a big reason I teach more now, aside from road weariness from the 90s.
I agree about the late hours. People go out at midnight now. I’m not going to play from 12-4.
Oh well.

Halifax needs an Iron Horse Music Hall
http://www.iheg.com/iron_horse_main.asp
Saw Aimee Mann there last Tuesday. It’s an old barn of a place, but you are very close to the musicians…I’ve also seen shows there by Ricky Lee Jones (waste of $50), NRBQ, Thomas Dolby, Chris Isaacs, and Enter the Haggis (kilt wearing rockers from Guelph). I can’t stop thinking that if a little city of 35,000 can support a music hall like the horse, Halifax sure could!
Basically, Halifax is where people hone their craft before they hit the road to bigger markets to make the big bucks. You’re not going to make much of yourself in this day and age sitting around here playing to our bar scene.
Robbie Burns’ Day on the morrow and a live music bitch tonight. What better excuse to post this from my favourite Scottish folk duo:

you beat me to it laddie…up the scots down with the english queen^^ two lovely beasts for the price of one http://www.fernhill.com/wp-content/uploads…
when i was with the langley beach crowd and short of cash, we had too much talent. and that really hurts a group. if you have 5 guitar players and 3 drummers, what are you to do. when i formed the christian group, the black sheep, we always had a plethora of vocalists, both male and female. and when i was with sadie sampson tour group years back, well needless to say, there was an abumdance of local talent too. poor old sadie, i miss her doing the charlston on christmas daddies show. ivan must remmember her, as well as some of the other bitchers here. but yes o.p., talent is very lacking these days. seems anyone with a cassette recorder can make a bunch of fucking noise, and peddle it off as music.
I think Halifax would be a great jumping off place for a tour, either of North America or Europe.
OB, they have no talent. That’s why they fake it and go on stage.
I think Halifax would be a great jumping off place for a suicide…
and I’m not alone…
