Why is it so hard to find work in this city, and why is the cost of living so high? It is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE for being a small city with so little to offer. I’m a born and bred Nova Scotian, I’ve lived here my whole life, but I feel trapped. I can’t move without a nest egg, but cost of living is so high that I can’t live and save up at the same time. Not to mention the horrible winters that wreak havoc on my depression and limit my mobility.

I wish I could make a life for myself here in Halifax, but the city seems more interested in catering to rich Ontarians who come here to study than taking care of its own. —at least it’s not Cape Breton

  1. Rent is pretty cheap in Dartmouth. Have you looked else where besides the Trillium?

  2. Its really not that expensive to live here, no more so than anywhere else these days. If you want to live in the South End and go to Petes Froutique for all your groceries and play “student from Ontario” than yeah its unaffordable for most people.

  3. uh, crock of shit mwagon.
It doesn’t help that our dollar is getting the shit kicked out of it, driving import costs up.

    Everything sucks.

  4. Dude, RESEARCH before bitching:

It`s hard to find work, sure. But it`s no harder than most of the rest of the country. Actually, it`s easier. Halifax has one of the best rates of job openings to job seekers in the country, (i.e., fewer job seekers for every job) and lower unemployment than almost any other city east of the prairies.

The cost of living is the highest in the Maritimes, so mom and dad in Yarmouth probably think it`s cuhraaazzeee, but it`s dirt cheap compared to other cities across the country. Once you factor in average incomes (high) against housing costs (low-ish) and taxes (high), we still come out ahead of most other cities, income-wise.

I know sometimes our constant bitching makes it SEEM like Halifax is some hardscrabble dirthole, but the truth is, it`s pretty much the same as everywhere. Sure, things will be easier financially if you go be an oilpatch roughneck. But if you move to Vancouver or Toronto or wherever, you`ll be struggling even more to make ends meet.

If you`ve got problems with the city, stick around and help the rest of us fix `em.

  5. Mod dislikes everything haha, that’s what happens when your diet consist mainly of kale.

  6. It is hard but it’s possible dive and success we need alot of to survive but it is worth iy. and we have alot of both! Everyone comes back for a reason! And they also love cape breton for a reason.

  7. Ok just so you know, people from Ontario seem rich only because living expenses and taxes there are actually less than here. So they’re able to live and save some money at the same time. Also have you ever been to Bedford, Windsor, Wolfville, Kentvile?! Falmouth, Tantallon, Peggy’s Cove? Any of these areas? How you seen how these people live?!
Do you even know how much any of these properties cost?!
I know there are poor people here. They exist everywhere. I have never seen so many rich people in one place! Look at how many “homeless” we have! virtually non-existent!

Also jobs there pay more so they do seem rich only because we’re screwed!
