Halifax’s parade isn’t even called a Gay Pride Parade anymore. Some spineless members of the community now run the show and seem to think the word Gay in the name would exclude some people, including heterosexuals. Also, if you read-between the lines of the Bible, any version, like you suggest, you will find that it never says it’s a sin for one man to love another man. Homosexual sex is always lumped in with bans against other “immoral” sexual acts like fucking your sister, or your goat. To me, this is more a caution against sexual relationships that are based on selfishness and lust, not love. That’s a sentiment in keeping with Christian theology. The idea of calling love between consenting adults (and by extension, the physical expression of that love) a sin does not really fit with most concepts of a loving God (Christian or otherwise). But maybe that’s my heresy that Christ needs to fix 😛
Actually kay, when the book (that being the Torah originally, which is the old testament) was originally translated in the Dark Ages, it was mistranslated. The problem with that is this; even if you read “between the lines” so to speak, you’re interpreting words that were written by misogynistic old men 1000 years ago. The question of religion is not about the historical people within it; it’s about the stuff they preach. Intolerance is still intolerance even if it’s the way it’s been for 1000 years.

2. While the Bible might be divinely inspired it was written by humans, with all the flaws, prejudices and agendas of humans. Furthermore, it has been edited beyond recognition. Where are the women writers? Where are the chapters/gospels that have been edited out? These texts do exist.
3. The OT is based on the rule of law, the NT is based on compassion and forgiveness. Where is the compassion here? Christians are supposed to follow the NT, or is this a cherry picking for self-service type of Christianity?
4. Heaven as the float-y place and hell as the burn-y place are also human conventions. Hell as we know it, per se, was the imaginings of 13th century Italian poet Dante Alighieri.

I think your perspectives are pretty spot on. People often seem to have a difficult time separating the human element of theology (the religion, churches, rituals, etc) from the actual philosophy and spirituality. I think whether you believe in God or not, it is important to understand the distinction. It is completely unfair, in my opinion, to point to all the shitty human believers as evidence that God must be shitty too.
As someone who was raised Catholic and eventually chose not to stay with the faith for various reasons, I still have to wonder what the hell half of these hardcore Christians were taught at church that I missed. I was taught that I should love my neighbour, treat others as I would want to be treated and that Jesus/ God loves all of us no matter what. The stories I learned about Jesus depicted him as someone who loved and helped everyone.
So this means Jesus loves gay people and there would be no reason for him to think that they had an “unhealthy mind” as Kay said. Because Jesus was not a close-minded asshole.

I think you’ll find extremists in any religion. Geez, my father’s family is all Russian Orthodox, and if you ever want to see God-fearing, these people put Irish Catholics to shame.
