In the spirit of bike week this is dedicated to the stupid bitch who decided to turn right on University Ave without signalling or looking and almost hit me on my bike: FUCK YOU, you dumb shit! Learn how to drive and be more careful. It’s a fucking hospital zone that has heavy bike traffic so be more considerate and use your goddamn signals! —Almost Hit by a Car Every Morning

  1. How about you follow the rules of the road? If he was in front of you, guess who had the right of way? HIM. People hate on cyclists because you bitch to get laws that help you, but ignore all rules of the road yourselves.

  2. I believe that passing on the inside of a car in the right most lane (probabally a turning lane) is pretty illegal. It would be like someone driving on the shoulder to pass a car. I almost took out a biker turning right once – and I had a signal on and was in a turning lane. The lady felt it was her right of way to pass me on the inside on her bike when I was stopped to turn right. Woman yelled at me, cop stopped me and asked if I knew what I did wrong. When I said “Nothing” she said “well that won’t help when the woman is under your car”… stupid people.

  3. The biker said this person didn’t have any signal lights on, so I don’t think it’s entirely their fault her but I have had that happen to me as well when I’m driving, that I’ll be turning right (and signaling of course) and a cyclist will just pass me on the right. Everyone just needs to go slower and be more careful around intersections, drivers and cyclists.

  4. Signal or not, what is the cyclist doing illegally passing cars on the right. Yup the want to be on the roads but don’t want to follow the rules.

  5. Umm if you’re being “Almost Hit by a Car Every Morning”, then you might want to reconsider the way you ride.

  6. From the few clues in the original bitch I don’t know how folks have extrapolated that the cyclist was doing something illegal.

The jump to conclusions is a short one, but quite frequent in these here parts.

  7. Commandante, pretty easy to figure out. If the cyclist was ahead of the vehicle, the vehicle couldn’t almost hit him or her when they turned right. The only way it could have happened is if the cyclist was passing to the right of the vehicle. The cyclist should have either been ahead or behind the vehicle (following at a safe distance like any other vehicle).

  8. But cycles don’t travel at the same speed as cars, and it’s very unlikely that a car driver would have the patience to remain behind a cycle (as it seems to have been suggested that all vehicles – cycles and cars – should remain in a single line). Since cyclists have to reside beside car traffic, rather than within it, and since the driver turning on University Ave didn’t signal, how was the cyclist to predict that she would be turning? He can’t. He cycles along until he is made aware the car in front of him is intending to turn, at which point he slows down to allow that turn to take place.

  9. You might be right, Bro Tim, but if that’s the case then I think you’ve just made a good argument for cyclists to occupy a regular traffic lane rather than trying to hug the curb and stay out of the way of other vehicles.

Personally, though, I’d need a more complete description of the vehicular crime scene to draw conclusions.

  10. Which is exactly the point why bikes should not be on the roads. They can’t keep the speed for the flow of traffic or when traffic is backed up they cause danger by passing on the right.

  11. Bikes aren’t supposed to be ridden on sidewalks. You don’t want them on roads.

Are you willing to build “bikes only” transportation routes? I don’t mean bike lanes on existing streets. I mean actual roads that are restricted to “bikes only” traffic.

If not, then you must want bikes abolished as transportation.

  12. Fortunately BroTim isn’t in charge of anything, so we can keep on biking to Blissville.

I think the worst thing, other than a car turning left in front of you while you are travelling through an intersection (the car is coming towards you and turns left, not the car is travelling with you and turns left) is when you are pretty much at or on the corner going straight and a driver overtakes you and turns right (this is why smart cyclists move more to the left or take up a whole lane when going through intersections).

  13. I like this new law in place (one meter distance), I’m surprised that motorists aren’t driving off the road or into oncoming traffic.
I love to cycle. However, I will drive to a trail in my car (with bike of course) and bike safely.

Some of the roads in HAL or DAR were not created to handle both. But shit you have European countries that were designed for such traffic.

Our ancestors must have come over here in cars and not bikes. Wait a minute… Wouldn’t they have drowned?

  14. It is not illegal to pass on the right if the cars in the lane are stopped (read Bill 93). It is also the motorists’ obligation to check their blind spot, especially if they just passed the cyclist. Most people don’t seem to realize that cyclists can move pretty quickly and will likely catch up to a slowing vehicle intending to make a turn. That’s why you should signal.
Finally, there is no dedicated right turn lane on University (in the hospital zone), so the cyclist was not in the wrong on this point.
Lastly, you can’t have it both ways. If you want cyclists to obey the law you can’t complain that laws are created that outline their rights and obligations.
